The rehabilitation of British artist Stanley Spencer
By Paul Mitchell 20 September 2001 Use this version to print Send this link by email Email the author The work of British artist Stanley Spencer (1891-1959) has undergone a resurgence of interest in the art world recently. Long viewed by some as a provincial joke, several artists and critics now claim Spencer was the greatest British artist of the twentieth century. Christ carrying the Cross down Cookham High Street Spencer grew to maturity at a turbulent period in history. Far-reaching social and scientific changes challenged previous ideas about the nature of man and his relationship to the world. It produced considerable intellectual and political shifts, epitomized in the growth of the international socialist movement at one pole and the cultivation of nationalism and imperialist militarism at the other. Ferment in artistic circles took the form of a fight against tradition, philistinism and sentimental romanticism. John Donne Arriving In Heaven Apple Gatherers In Zacharias and Elizabeth (1913-14) Shortly before he was called up for military service he painted a beautiful Self-Portrait , the light effects being reminiscent of Caravaggio.

A quick consideration of Spencer as an artist of the sacred will give some idea of the concerns of this site. It is easy enough to say that Spencer was an artist of the sacred. But what does that mean exactly? Consider one of Spencer's last works, The Crucifixion (1958). This depicts the crucifixion of Christ as taking place in a contemporary setting, in the High Street at Cookham, the Berkshire village where the artist was born and where he spent most of his life. Spencer had been producing comparable pictures throughout his career. A 1935 example is the St Francis and the Birds in which the saint is represented by the artist's aged father out in the village in his dressing gown and slippers. How are we to understand such works and the personality behind them?

Sir Stanley Spencer English painter
Main
born June 30, 1891, Cookham, Berkshire, England died December 14, 1959, Taplow, Buckinghamshire one of the leading painters in England between the World Wars. He used an expressively distorted style of drawing and often drew upon Christian subjects. Spencer studied at the Slade School of Fine Art in London from 1908 to 1912, and he first exhibited at the New English Art Club. He frequently used his hometown, Cookham, as a setting for his paintings, many of which were based on biblical themes. From 1915 to 1918 Spencer served in World War I, an experience that inspired works such as the mural The Resurrection of the Soldiers In the 1930s Spencer painted a number of erotic works on the theme of love, including Love Among the Nations (1935) and a series of highly detailed nudes of his second wife. He received harsh criticism from the Royal Academy and the public for his portrayal of St. Francis of Assisi

January 18, 2008 Current Stories Abraham Joshua Heschel Scott Neeson Update Headlines: This Week in Religion News BOB ABERNETHY : British painter Stanley Spencer saw God in everything and painted biblical scenes set in his small hometown of Cookham. It's not unusual in his paintings to see Jesus with the town's butcher, blacksmith, or candlestick maker. Now, for the first time in its history, Washington, DC's Hirshhorn Museum, known for its 20th-century art collection, is presenting an exhibit on Spencer and his religious art. Art critic Martha Bayles reviewed the show.
MARTHA BAYLES : Stanley Spencer was a small man. He never grew taller than five foot two. Stanley Spencer lived in a small town. Cookham is an English country village 30 miles west of London on the River Thames. Spencer was born in Cookham in 1891, and except for two world wars, he lived there until his death in 1959. A small man from a small town. And for most of his 68 years, Stanley Spencer was considered a small artist. Twentieth-century art has been dominated by abstraction; Spencer painted people. He painted this self-portrait at the age of 23. Not only did Spencer paint people, but in an age of relentlessly secular art, he painted religious visions. His daughter, Shirin Spencer, remembers.

Lindworth was a large semi-detached house on High Street at Cookham, Berkshire, where the English cubist Stanley Spencer lived from 1932-38. A ready market for Spencer's still lifes, and his landscapes, assisted the artist in times of financial need. Spencer saw his religious paintings as his chief contribution to art history and was often disparaging of his still lifes and landscapes, referring to them as potboilers. However, the attention to detail and sense of place and home evident in this work ensure enduring appeal. Top of page Print Friendly Site Map Postage Information

Yesterday ( the last day of April ) was a glorious day - sunny and warm with a clear blue sky and excellent light which wasn't dazzling. Coming back from a meeting in Oxford, I decided to try and visit two places near the M4o that I'd been wanting to get to for some time, knowing full well that I'd do neither justice. This was very much a late afternoon ' scout round and decide how soon I want to come back if at all ' visit!

Stanley Spencer is one of the dominant figures of twentieth-century British art. This major exhibition will bring together over one hundred of his paintings and drawings from private and public collections around the world. It aims to present a concise retrospective of one of Britain's best-loved painters, with emphasis on the particularly intense period of the 1930s. The exhibition will include a strong selection of the great, well-known works, but also many less familiar works, which have never been seen before. In addition there will be two specially made films; the first presenting the murals in the Sandham Memorial Chapel at Burghclere, the second a digital recreation of the Church-House project, Spencer's imagined space for much of his later work. Stanley Spencer (1891-1959) was an outstanding student at the Slade School of Art in London, and the first section of the exhibition is devoted to his early work reflecting the dual influence of Giotto and Gauguin. This early flowering culminates in masterpieces such as The Nativity (1912, University College London) and Zacharias and Elizabeth (1914, recently purchased jointly by Tate and Sheffield City Art Gallery); in both a biblical theme is embedded within the landscape of the Berkshire village of Cookham where he grew up and lived for much of his life.

Stanley Spencer: under an english heaven
Art in America Sept, 1998 by Aimee Brown Price Fiercely independent, British painter Stanley Spencer developed an esthetic at odds with European modernism. A current retrospective showcases works ranging from studies of labor and war to personal expose to scenes from his hometown of Cookham-on-Thames. Prodigious from early on, touted when he was an art student and already the recipient of important awards, Stanley Spencer (1891-1959) was confident of his gifts, a helpful trait in the world of art, where the unusual or original may be trounced by people of little vision but large voices or, worse, ignored. Spencer's wonder at the world and its marvelousness, often the driving spirit of his imagery, whether in his religious paintings, portraiture, landscapes or his so-called imaginary pictures, did not stop when it came to himself. What might have been insufferable braggadocio and shameless conceit in others was redeemed by an endearingly guileless acceptance of what he had to offer.
