Stanley Spencer

"Stanley Spencer," Mar. 22-June 24, 2001, at Tate Britain, Milbank, London SW1P 4R6 England.
Perhaps jealous of the attention received by its new sibling across the water, Tate Britain has opened what is considered an assured crowd-pleaser for British art lovers a retrospective of the early modernist painter, Stanley Spencer (1891-1959). Critic Simon Jenkins of the Times of London, for one, cooed over the late artist's heartfelt narratives. Spencer's previous retrospectives (at the Hirshhorn Museum in Washington, D.C., in 1997 and at the Royal Academy in London in 1980) amply demonstrated his religious fervor in images of his hometown of Cookham, the compassion he felt for his fellow residents and his quirky romantic and sexual obsessions. Spencer has frequently come across as a quaint village innocent, inextricably tied to small-town England. Forgotten has been the shock and controversy that his works originally provoked. In this new retrospective, however, Spencer's work appears more stylistically avant-garde than ever before. Spencer's early work is a synthesis of French Post-Impressionism and early Italian painting typified by Giotto. Spencer was a key member of the "Neo-Primitive" group, allied with David Bomberg, William Roberts and other young artists at the Slade College of Art.

Biography:

Stanley Spencer studied at the Slade School of Art in London from 1909 to 1912. He served in the military during World War I and World War II and then returned to his hometown of Cookham where he spent most of his life. Because of his quiet and eccentric nature, Spencer created most of his work without the influence of mainstream movements, but some qualities did appear in his work. A deeply religious man, his paintings often had biblical themes. He became Sir Stanley Spencer right before his death in 1959.

Artwork of the Week - Stanley Spencer
Liverpool artwork of the week 2008 No. 2. The Resurrection, Cookham 1924-7 by Stanley Spencer at Tate Liverpool January 15 to April 27 2008 Another top exhibition opens at Tate Liverpool this week in the Wolfson Gallery on the ground floor. Its Free. Stanley Spencer (1891–1959) became an important figure in British art during the first half of the twentieth century. Though he painted a variety of subjects he is best known, and loved, for his paintings that fuse everyday life with religious themes. His works concentrate on descriptive detail, incident and anecdote, which combined with his visionary and imaginative spiritualism make manifest the sacred in the everyday. Devoutly Christian, Spencer's faith defined both the subjects of his paintings and their stylistic treatment. In large-scale paintings intended to recall religious frescos or altarpieces, Spencer depicted incidents inspired by the Bible. The scenes and events were however transferred to the familiar setting of Cookham, the Berkshire village on the banks of the River Thames in which he had lived since a child, and other close-knit communities such as the Clyde shipbuilders of Glasgow. Through his art he sought to discover the sacred in the daily lives of ordinary working British people and to show that all parts of life are touched by spirituality.

STANLEY SPENCER HOME PAGE Welcome to the Stanley Spencer Web Site. This site is intended as an academic resource for students and others who wish to study Spencer's work. It contains a bibliography and a separate page with comments on the usefulness (or otherwise) of the more important books concerned with Spencer. There is also a chronology of his life to enable those unfamiliar with his work to get some idea of how his ideas developed. I've also included a short guide to the more important collections of his work and a quick look at relevant news items. This site arose out of my studies at Birkbeck College, London University. Having been an admirer of his work for more than 20 years it seemed a good idea to use him as the subject of my dissertation. In view of his place as one of Britain's most important 20th century artists I was surprised to find he didn't have a dedicated Web site. Which is why this site was created. Fortunately Spencer's biographer Ken Pople has now launched his own site. You'll find a link in the 'Important Collections' and 'News' sections. I would welcome contributions from anyone with an interest in exploring Spencer's work. I'm particularly interested in the psychological aspects of the paintings. He had such a complex mind that I find it difficult to really grasp his psychology, perhaps someone with expertise in this field would like to contribute their thoughts on him. If you have any comments or wish to contribute, especially to the news page, E-mail me. All contributors will receive

    Sir Stanley Spencer
Born: 30th June 1891 at Cookham, Berkshire
    Artist
    Died 14th December 1959
    at Cliveden, Buckinghamshire
Stanley was the eighth surviving child of William Spencer, a music teacher, and his wife, Anne. He was born in a semi-detached Victorian house halfway along the High Street in Cookham , on the that day a crow fell down its chimney and flapped about the living room until released. The family thought it a good omen and named him after Stanley Spencer, a prominent balloonist of the era. He obtained his educated at a school run by his sisters before entering Maidenhead Technical College where his artistic training began. His first been art lessons were from Dorothy Bailey. At seventeen, Stanley entered the Slade School of Fine Art at University College, London and, there, he won the Composition Prize for ‘The Nativity’ (1912). Stanley joined the Royal Army Medical Corps (RAMC) at the outbreak of the First World War. He worked, for a while, at the Beaufort Hospital in Bristol before being sent, in August 1916, to Salonika - a Macedonian port defended by the British & the French under General Sarrail - as part of the 68th Field Ambulancemen. He transferred to an infantry unit in August 1917. In May the following year, Stanley was asked to contribute artistically to the government planned Hall of Remembrance. He was to "to paint a picture under such title as ‘A Religious Service at the Front,’ or any subjects in or about Salonika". However, work on Stanley’s most famous war painting, ‘Travoys arriving with Wounded at a Dressing Station at Smol, Macedonia (September 1916),’ did not begin until after the Armistice.
