Barefoot in the Synagogue
Prof. Eliezer Bashan
Department of Jewish History
When G-d was revealed to Moses at the burning bush, He called out to him, "Remove your sandals from your feet, for the place on which you stand is holy ground" (Ex. 3:5). A similar thing, with the omission of the last word "ground" was said to Joshua by the captain of the Lord's host (Josh. 5:15).
Removing sandals and going barefoot denotes various things in Scripture. It appears as an expression of sorrow and grieving: "David meanwhile went up... weeping as he went; his head was covered and he walked barefoot" (II Sam. 15:30). Similarly, we read in Jeremiah 2:25: "Save your foot from going bare, and your throat from thirst." Sometimes it appears along with removal of clothes, so regarding the war against Assyria, the Lord said to Isaiah: " 'Go, untie the sackcloth from your loins and take your sandals off your feet,' which he had done, going naked and barefoot... so shall the king of Assyria drive off the captives of Egypt and the exiles of Nubia, young and old, naked and barefoot..." (Isaiah 20:2-4). Thus we see that taking off sandals denotes an encounter with the sacred, mourning, and going off into exile.

Lyman Omer Littlefield, 1819-c1890
Autobiography (1819-1848) Lyman Omer Littlefield, Reminiscences of Latter-day Saints (Logan, Utah: The Utah Journal Co., 1888) REMINISCENCES OF LATTER-DAY SAINTS Chapter II Lyman Omer Littlefield, who has undertaken in this little volume to give publicity to many incidents connected with the experience of the Saints, is the second son of Waldo Littlefield and Mercy Higgins. His grandfather, Josiah Littlefield, fought through the war of 1812, for which service he drew a pension during the latter years of his life. He is a native of the state of New York, township of Verona, Oneida County, and first breathed the vital spark of life November 22, 1819. Counting up the years, it is easily determined that he is now nearing the "three score and ten," which so frequently fixes the limit of human life. When his mind wanders back over the vista of the past to call up the time and place where he first heard a rumor of anything pertaining to the strange people now having a world-wide fame as Mormons, or, more properly, Latter-day Saints, the focus of his mind concentrates upon a spot in dear old Verona which was his home by virtue of its being the abode of his parents. In that neighborhood he made his infantile debut upon this terrestrial globe and there is laid the scene of his earliest recollections. But that halcyon period is ended now. The actors are scattered upon the wide globe, and those then so devoted in their friendships would be strangers now if chance were to bring them together. But, at such meeting, did some fortuitous chance reveal the parties' names, the intuitive powers would be instantaneous in throwing off feelings of restraint and prompting enquiries into the fortunes of each since the days of childhood had gone down forever in the great whirlpool of time.

EXHIBITION REPORT “Love revealed: Simeon Solomon and the Pre-Raphaelites”
curated by Colin Cruise and Victoria Osborne, with accompanying exhibition catalogue
[Some of you are aware of my own work on the gay Pre-Raphaelite artist Simeon Solomon. I mention this because I am the author of one of the essays in the exhibition catalogue. As a result, the following is a report, not a review, on the Simeon Solomon exhibition and the accompanying catalogue.] The exhibition brings together over 100 of Solomon’s works, some of which have not been seen publicly since they were exhibited in his lifetime. As a result, it is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity not only to experience so many of his works in one location, but also to see his diverse interests in watercolor, oil, printmaking, and photography. Those interested in queer studies will not be disappointed by the exhibition. Cruise and Osborne have taken what I perceive to be a progressive approach to Solomon’s homosexuality. Rather than focusing exclusively on it (or on his religion for that matter), the exhibition instead reveals his homosexuality (and his Jewishness) as an obvious and accepted part of his life and oeuvre. The exhibition closes in Birmingham on January 15, 2006. It moves to the Museum Villa Stuck, Munich (March 9 to June 18, 2006), where Solomon’s work will be seen as part of the European Symbolist tradition of Franz von Stuck and others. The exhibition then moves to the Ben Uri Gallery at the London Jewish Museum of Art (September 11 to November 26, 2006). For those unable to visit the exhibition, the accompanying catalogue published by Merrill is worth purchasing. There are six essays written by some of the leading art historians in Solomon and Pre-Raphaelite studies, and the images are printed in full-color, providing the reader with a vivid recreation of Solomon’s works. Still, a visit to one of the exhibition venues will introduce to the queer art historian the true talent of this once-forgotten artist, now on his comeback tour.

    “Sweet for a little even to fear and sweet,
    O Love! to lay down fear as Love's fair feet;
    Shall not some fiery memory of his breath
    Lie sweet on lips that touch the lips of death?
    Yet leave me not; yet if thou wilt, be free;
    Love me no more, but love my love of thee,
    Love where thou wilt, and live thy life; and I,
    One thing I can, and one Love cannot die.” Algernon Charles Swinburne Taken from http://www.victorianweb.org/painting/ssolomon/paintings/1.html A COMMENTARY ABOUT SIMEON SOLOMON’S DAMON AND AGLAE AND THE LINES BELOW THE PAINTING, BY ALGERNON CHARLES SWINBURNE Algernon Charles Swinburne (London, 1837-1909) was a famous English writer in the Victorian Era. Se estableció en Londres y comenzó una larga relación con el poeta y pintor Dante Gabriel Rossetti y los escritores William Morris y George Meredith(...) Atalanta en Calydon (1865) le lanzó a la fama. Este poema constituyó un ambicioso intento por reproducir la forma y espíritu de la tragedia griega y pone de manifiesto el talento extraordinario del poeta para mantener la melodía verbal.(...) Escritor de brillantes recursos técnicos, dominó la música del verso y sus experimentos en el uso del metro y la rima crearon una gran variedad de efectos poéticos originales.”(
