Simeon Solomon (9 October 1840 - 14 August 1905), British painter. Coming from an orthodox Jewish family, he was a very spiritual person, and often chose his subjects from the Old Testament and from the contemporary Jewish life, having a real passion for the religious themes. He was a rather successful painter, but his career was completely destroyed in February 1873, when he was arrested homosexual offences. Even if the charges were dropped, all his former friends rejected him, and his reputation was shattered forever. In a society governed by the strict rules of the Victorian moral code, such an accusation was the end of any career. For the rest of his life Simeon was an outcast. Broken, he turned to drinking, and died in 1905. During his last years he supported himself by making drawings and pastels, at very low prices.

COMMENTS REGARDING FRANKLIN COUNTY MARRIAGE BOOK 1838-1875
By Judy Henley Phillips
The marriage book at the courthouse (1838-1875) is either not the original book or the clerk had difficulty recording the marriages from the officiator's record. During the course of many years of research, I have discovered the discrepancies given below. I'm sure there are more. Many of the brides have had a previous marriage. I have not included those in this list. I encourage you to submit any corrections that you may have found for inclusion on this web page.

Simeon Solomon was an English Pre-Raphaelite painter.
Born and educated in London, Solomon started receiving lessons in painting from his older brother around 1850. He started attending Carey's Art Academy in 1852. His older sister first exhibited her works at the Royal Academy during the same year.
As a student at the Royal Academy Schools, Simeon was introduced through Dante Gabriel Rossetti to other members of the Pre-Raphaelite circle, including the poet Algernon Charles Swinburne and the painter Edward Burne-Jones in 1857. His first exhibition was at the Royal Academy in 1858. He continued to hold exhibitions of his work at the Royal Academy between 1858 and 1872. In addition to the literary paintings favoured by the Pre-Raphaelite school, Solomon's subjects often included scenes from the Hebrew Bible and genre paintings depicting Jewish life and rituals.
In the late 1860s, Solomon began to travel to Italy in order to study the old masters. These trips stimulated his imagination and resulted in works on classical themes.

page: Known for his association with the Pre-Raphaelites and the Aesthetic Movement, Simeon Solomon lived a life marked by both stunning success and wasteful tragedy. He is significant for glbtq culture, for he chose to live openly as a homosexual at a time when it was not socially acceptable to do so; he wrote an important prose poem that may be read as a defense of male-male desire; and he created works depicting androgynous male figures who are representative of homoerotic love. Sponsor Message.
In addition, Solomon may be seen as a victim of late nineteenth-century English homophobia Although he had earned recognition as an artist, Solomon's life and career deteriorated after his arrest for "buggery" in 1873. He lived most of the remaining 32 years of his life as a social outcast and his work faded into oblivion after his death in 1905. It has only recently been re-examined. Simeon, the youngest of eight children born to Meyer Solomon and Kathe Levey, was born on October 9, 1840. The Solomon family was the first Orthodox Jewish family permitted to conduct business in London during the nineteenth century.

Introduction: Literary and Artistic Relations
When Burne-Jones met Simeon Solomon in the late 1850s, he thought his work as imaginative as anything he had ever seen. Solomon showed precocious talent, exhibiting his first Royal Academy picture at the age of 18 in 1858. During the 1860s he was a highly influential young artist, one of the circle which was moving towards aestheticism, and which included Rossetti Burne-Jones and the poet Swinburne Solomon and Swinburne met in 1863, they became close friends and exercised a mutual influence on each other. Swinburne was at this time reading widely in classical literature including Ovid, Homer and Euripides. Inspired by this and by three trips to Italy between 1866 and 1870, Solomon was one of the instigators of the revival of classicism in the 1860s; this aspect of his work is shown in The Little Improvisatice In the heart of materialistic mid-Victorian society a small group of painters tried to develop a symbolic art which would aspire to absolute beauty and transcend the time and place in which it was produced. Simeon Solomon's 'Night' is a product of this movement. In the 1860s Solomon was a central figure in a group which included the painters Rossetti, Burne-Jones and Whistler and the writers Pater and Swinburne. In 1873, after his career collapsed in scandal, he worked in isolation, his historical importance unrecognised. This drawing dates from a turning point in the artist's life.
