Alfred Sisley
Alfred Sisley was an English Impressionist landscape painter living and working in France, was one of the creators of French Impressionism.
Sisley was born in Paris to English parents, William Sisley and Felicia Sell. After his schooldays, his father, a merchant trading with the southern states of America, sent him to London for a business career between 1857 and 1861. In 1862, having decided to become a painter, his family gave him every support, sending him to Gleyre's studio, where he met Renoir, Monet and Bazille. The friends often worked together in the open air in the Forest of Fontainebleau, at Chailly. They wanted to realistically capture transient effects of sunlight; which resulted in paintings more colorful and more broadly painted than the public was accustomed to seeing. Consequently, Sisley and his friends initially had few opportunities to exhibit or sell their work.
Sisley's student works are lost. His earliest known work, "Lane near a Small Town" is believed to have been painted around 1864. His style at this time was deeply influenced by Courbet and Daubigny, and when he first exhibited at the Salon in 1867 it was as the pupil of Corot.

PLE ASE RETURN TO MAIN PAGE ALFRED SISLEY Paris 1839 - 1899 Moret-sur-Loing Born in Paris to bourgeois British parents, Sisley received an excellent education, even studying English and business in London before returning to Paris where his father arranged for the twenty-three year old to enter the studio of the history painter Charles Gleyre in 1862. Fellow students of Gleyre included Renoir, Monet and Bazille; their friendship was to revolutionize painting and radically change the history of art. Though none of the four felt a particular affinity for the highly academic and somewhat pedantic Gleyre, it was young Monet’s personality-clash with the master that resulted in the group leaving the studio and setting out on their own. Inseparable for a time, the group traveled and painted together, Sisley’s early style being particularly influenced by the paintings of Corot, Courbet and Daubigny whom he met while working around Paris with his companions. Sisley painted in the French countryside with Renoir in 1866, his first year at the Salon, where he was received as a student of Corot, and in 1867 stayed for a time with Bazille, who painted his portrait that year. Sisley returned to England from 1870 to 1871 (during the Franco-Prussian War) where he exhibited, and again in 1874.

Along with Gustav Caillebotte This attitude, along with a lack of substantial biographical information and the overwhelming presence of Monet and other Impressionist painters with more distinctive styles, has long pushed Sisley into the background. What I find most appealing about Sisley, however, can be found in his paintings that live somewhere on the realist side of full-blown Impressionist technique, painted honestly and directly with more of an eye to the color and light of the scene than to the abstract notions of purity of color and optical mixing of hues. The result is a fresh, painterly approach in which the feeling of light and color are more important than technique. His palette is also likely to be more subdued than Monet at his most explosive, preferring a more naturalistic harmony of color. Although very influenced by his Impressionist compatriots, Sisley considered himself a student of Corot and also showed the influence of Courbet and even

Lane of Poplars at Moret (1890) is arguably irresistible to thieves, as its August, 2007 removal from the Musée des Beaux-Arts, Nice marks the third time it has been stolen within thirty years.
Previously taken with Monet's Cliffs Near Dieppe (1897) in the 1998 robbery Lane of Poplars... was also the target of a 1978 heist. On loan to an exhibition in Marseilles at that time, it was snatched and recovered within days. Though the canvas had been hidden in a Marseilles municipal water drain (or sewer, dependent on one's grasp of French), it suffered minimal damage and was quickly restored.

Alfred Sisley (1839-1899)
Alfred Sisley was born in Paris in 1839 to English parents, William Sisley and Felicia Sell. While studying business in London from 1857 until 1861, he admired paintings of John Constable and Joseph Mallord William Turner, which convinced him that his calling was that of an artist.
On his return to Paris, his family supported his decision and allowed him to enroll at the atelier of Swiss painter Marc-Charles-Gabriel Gleyre, where he became acquainted with Frederic Bazille, Claude Monet and Pierre-Auguste Renoir. In their company, he started to frequent the Café Guerbois, and became more deeply influenced by the notions which were creating Impressionism. It was the rebellious outing of these four friends into the forest at Fontainbleau that set the stage for what was to become known as the Impressionist Movement.
Together they would paint landscapes en plein air which resulted in paintings more colourful and spontaneous than the public had been accustomed to seeing. Sisley's paintings, mainly of scenes near Paris, were gentle and idyllic with soft, harmonious colours.
Although Sisley's work attracted little attention in his lifetime, its importance has since been recognized and his landscape paintings occupy an inviolable position in the history of early Impressionism. His work strongly invokes atmosphere and his skies are always very impressive. His concentration on landscape subjects was the most consistent of any of the Impressionists. His depictions of the Seine at Bougival, the St. Martin Canal, the Seine in flood, and the snow-bound suburbs of Paris are indispensable to an account of Impressionist landscape painting in the 1870s.

Sisley, Alfred (1839-1899)
French landscape painter, born in Paris of English parents. As a pupil in the studio of Swiss painter Charles Gabriel Gleyre, Sisley met French artists Claude Monet and Pierre Auguste Renoir, with whom he founded the impressionist school of painting (see Impressionism).
Although Sisley's work attracted little attention in his lifetime, its importance has since been recognized. Sisley's gentle, idyllic paintings, mainly of scenes near Paris, reveal the influence of French painter Camille Corot, especially in their soft, harmonious colors.
Other reasons exist for Sisley's shadowy reputation. Most obviously, his output appears less substantial and less clearly directed than that of his associates - Monet, Renoir and Pissarro. Their later evolutions, especially those of Monet and Renoir, drew Impressionism into the early twentieth century.
Sisley's death at the very end of the nineteenth assumes a symbolic resonance. It signals the dissolution of the kind of Impressionism to which he had devoted his working life. His relatively early death put an end to the unmistakable signs of renewal in his painting of the 1890s: a late flowering, withered almost before it had begun.
Compared with that of his colleagues, Sisley's development was neither complex nor dramatic. The personality his work exudes is reticent and sober, marked, as the American painter Marsden Hartley wrote, by a 'solemn severity'.
