Exhibition themes: Alfred Sisley, Camille Pissarro
Camille Pissarro moved to Pontoise, to the north-west of Paris, in 1872; and then to the nearby villages of Osny and Eragny, where he extended his repertoire beyond the capturing of landscape vistas, to record the daily life and work of the rural inhabitants of these regions. By 1886, however, Pissarro had increasingly abandoned painting principally before nature, in favour of manipulating colour and light in his studio, in emulation of Georges Seurat's new chromo-luminarist theories. Seurat's scientific theories of colour division abandoned the harmonious blending of tones favoured by Impressionism, in favour of placing strong, opposing blocks of colour side by side. These would blend optically and create light, it was argued, when the viewer stood at a certain distance from a painting. Next theme >>

Alfred Sisley
Birth Year : 1833 Death Year : 1899 Country : United Kingdom Alfred Sisley, was an Englishman born in Paris, where his father ran an prosperous business. Sisley studied at the Acad©mie Gleyre in 1862 with Monet and his friends. In the role of neutral English mediator, he shared in the evening discussions at the Cafe Guerbois. After the 1863 Salon des Refus©s, Sisley left Paris with Monet and the two lived and painted together in the still rural suburbs. Sisley's earliest works showed the influence of the Barbizon School and, particularly in color tonalities

Like his colleagues Monet and Pissarro, Sisley lived outside of Paris, where accommodations were more affordable. There he painted tranquil landscapes populated by local villagers and fashionable Parisian vacationers. In this painting, bright sunlight tempered by dappled shade in the foreground exemplifies the Impressionists' attention to light effects. The scene's idyllic ambiance is typical of Sisley's work. Hayashi Tadamasha, a Japanese art collector and dealer living in Paris, was the painting's first owner. In 1913, Mrs. Havemeyer acquired the work for her collection of Impressionist art.

    Original Painting Alfred Sisley (1839-1899)
Villeneuve-la-Garenne (Village on the Seine). 1872

Oil on canvas, The Hermitage Museum.
    Original: 59 x 80,5 cm
    The copying
was started on 27 March 2002. Impressionist painters turned repeatedly to the depiction of small provincial towns like Villeneuve-la-Garenne. This canvas comes from the early period of Impressionism and still retains elements of traditional compositions, with the centre of the landscape framed by trees, creating a stage-like effect. Yet this does not deprive the painting of its naturalness: Sisley had a fine lyrical sense and had the rare gift of being able to capture the modest charm and gentle beauty of nature. In this painting the "hero" is the vivid sunlight illuminating the buildings, seen from the shade beneath the trees.

      1. Alfred Sisley and Pierre-Auguste Renoir met around 1862, when Renoir began studying in Paris under Charles Gleyre. 2. When he was a boy, Renoir worked in a porcelain factory, where he painted designs on fine china.
      4. Renoir painted Sisley and his wife, Eug©nie Lesouezec, just two years after their wedding. Unlike other famous painters, Alfred Sisley remained with his wife for the rest of their lives. He died at age 59, just a few months after her death. 5. In Palermo, Sicily, on January 15, 1882, Renoir met Richard Wagner and painted a portrait of the composer in just 35 minutes. 6. During the Paris Commune in 1871, Renoir was almost thrown into the Seine River by commune members who thought he was a spy. A commune leader recognized Renoir, though, and saved the artist from a dunk in the river.
