Dante Gabriel Rossetti, 1828-1882
Nationality : English
Date of Birth : 12 May 1828
Place of Birth : 38 Charlotte Street,
Date of Death : 9 April 1882
Place of Death : Birchington-on-sea, Kent
Identity:
Christened as Gabriel Charles Dante Rossetti, D. G. Rossetti, as he became known, was the eldest son of the Italian Dante scholar and political refugee Gabriele Pasquale Giuseppe Rossetti and the half-Italian Frances Mary Lavinia Polidori. His godfather was Charles Lyell of Kinnordy. Rossetti had three siblings, Maria Francesca (b. 1827), William Michael (b. 1829) and Christina Georgina (b. 1830).
Life:
Rossetti, who was one of the founder members of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood, was both poet and artist. His first exhibited oil The Girlhood of Mary Virgin (1849) revealed his early debt to medieval art and his involvement with High Anglican Tractarianism. He predominantly worked in the medium of watercolour in the 1850s, and was preoccupied with medieval chivalric themes. Inspired by the Venetian masters, 1859 saw a shift towards the sensuous in both Rossetti's style and subject matter. From this point until the end of his life Rossetti absorbed himself in the painting of luxurious female half-lengths, notable for their decorative and symbolic accoutrements. In 1870 Rossetti's first book of poems was published. Wapping (YMSM 35) , and in the following year Rossetti took La Princesse du pays de la porcelaine (YMSM 50) into his studio in order to show a prospective client. This client did not purchase the work, but Whistler claimed that it was Rossetti who persuaded F. R. Leyland later to buy it. When Whistler was expelled from the Burlington Arts Club in December 1867 as a result of a dispute with his brother-in-law, F. Seymour Haden, Rossetti and his brother left in support. In 1871 Whistler showed his

Painter and poet, Brother of poet Christina Rossetti, and one of the founding members of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood. Although the movement was on the wane by the mid-1850s, new disciples Edward Burne-Jones and William Morris brought with them fresh enthusiasm. Rossetti's poems are distinguished by fantasy, leading the reader to ages past, to medieval colour, Arthurian legend, and Dantesque mysticism. I have been here before,
But when or how I cannot tell; I know the grass beyond the door, The sweet keen smell, The sighing sound, the lights around the shore.

FINE ART
The fine art collections consist of 2800 works including easel paintings, watercolours, drawings, sketchbooks, prints, sculpture and photographs dating from c.1700 to the present day with the majority of the works dating from the 19th and 20th centuries. The main strengths of the collections are local artists, Victorian artists including the Pre-Raphaelites and 20th century British artists. Local Artists
Local artists are well represented in the collections by over 1000 works consisting of easel paintings, watercolours, drawings, sketchbooks and prints. Although 18th century artists are few, Matthias Read (1669-1747) and Robert Carlyle (1773-1825) are represented. Carlisle became a significant artistic centre in 1823, with the opening of an 'Artists' Academy'. Key 19th century local artists connected with this who are well represented in the collections include Matthew Ellis Nutter (1795-1862), a Carlisle artist who taught a number of talented pupils at the Academy, including William James Blacklock (1816-1858). Nutter's son, William Henry (1819-1872) also became a talented artist. Sam Bough RSA (1822-1878), perhaps Carlisle's most famous artist, moved to Glasgow in 1848 and finally settled in Edinburgh, becoming one of the leading Victorian landscape-painters in Scotland. Bough is represented by 88 works in the collections.

O nce upon a time, in 1849, two young students at the esteemed Royal Academy in London shared a studio. These two men were William Holman Hunt and John Everett Millais . They became inspired by the words of John Ruskin ['go to nature in all singleness of heart'], and the poetry of John Keats (Hunts first picture for the Royal academy exhibition being painting on the theme from Keats poem The Eve of St. Agnes ). Another young artist, Dante Gabriel Rossetti (who had dropped out of the Royal Academy school) admired Hunt's picture at the exhibition and soon became a great friend of Hunt. Hunt and Rossetti drew up a list of personalities whom they deemed their ' immortals ' [William Shakespeare and such. . .] and affixed it to their studio wall. Searching for a purer form of art, [that was free from corruption pride and disease' -Hunt] they decided to return to the artistic traditions that came before Raphael and the Post Renaissance (hence the name Pre-Raphaelite). They saw the academic art that flourished in the Academy as "sloshy" [this refers to artists paying no attention to nature, and painting merely with the rules and techniques learned in the academies. The perfect example of this was the common scene of a nude on a beach. Why is she there? What is the context and story of this painting?] and nicknamed the founder of the academy "Sir Sloshua Reynolds". And so, in their enthusiasm to reform British art and they knew it [they would also exhibit their pictures with the initials P.R.B], the three men formed the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood and recruited four more members. Thus the
