    On this day in 1862 Elizabeth Siddal died at the age of thirty-two, almost certainly a suicide. Husband Dante Gabriel Rossetti was stirred by grief, guilt and his romantic temperament to the last-minute gesture of placing the only copies of many of his poems in his wife's coffin; seven years later, in one of the most notorious second-thoughts of love and literature, Rossetti retrieved and published the poems. top of page SELECTED WORKS BY THIS AUTHOR No books are presently listed for Elizabeth Siddal in this category. Elisabeth Siddal
    Elisabeth Siddal as Ophelia by Sir John Everett Millais (1829-1896)
    Ophelia, driven insane by the murder of her father by her lover Hamlet, is portrayed singing in her madness as she drowns.
    Millais’ model was Elizabeth Siddal, who was lying in a bath of cold water, so that he could base the drowning Ophelia on natural observation. Afterwards, 'Lizzie' became seriously ill.
    The pre-raphaelite artists filled their paintings often with the allegorical language of flowers and the natural world. Here Ophelia floats under the branches of a weeping willow surrounded by poppies and violets. A willow is a symbol of new life, but a 'weeping willow' is rather a symbol of sorrow. Poppies are symbols of death and violets are symbols of faithfulness.
    A Silent Wood
    O silent wood, I enter thee With a heart so full of misery For all the voices from the trees And the ferns that cling about my knees. In thy darkest shadow let me sit When the grey owls about thee flit; There will I ask of thee a boon, That I may not faint or die or swoon. Gazing through the gloom like one Whose life and hopes are also done, Frozen like a thing of stone I sit in thy shadow – but not alone. Can God bring back the day when we two stood Beneath the clinging trees in that dark wood?

    Poems and Drawings of Elizabeth Siddal
    A few copies remain from the limited numbered edition of 500 originally published in 1978. This is the first book from the Wombat Press (now Wombat Books), intended for lovers of Victorian literature and the Pre-Raphaelite Movement. Letterpress work on 'Kelmscott Chaucer' mould-made rag paper was done by the John Roberts Press of London, England, makers of the Kelmscott Chaucer facsimile: in both the Chaucer and Siddal volumnes, the unique paper used bears the watermark of William Morris. The text of sixteen poems, with Preface, Chronology and Notes, is set in Garamond type. Hand-folded and hand-sewn with Ingres paper covering acid-free millboard and linen backstripping over the spine, the book features the monogram EER (Elizabeth Eleanor Rossetti), as designed by Dante Gabriel Rossetti for his bride-to-be just before their marriage, stamped in gold on the front cover. After his wife's tragic death, Rossetti intended that these poems of Lizzie's should be published, though they never were until this edition. Like the EER monogram, many of the sixteen illustrations, including several in colour, have never been reproduced, or seen, outside the private collection to which they belong: included among them are a self portrait in oils, a variety of watercolours and designs and a letter to her friend Georgiana Burne-Jones, wife of the Pre-Raphaelite painter.

The cemetery in its original form (the older, Western part) was consecrated by the Bishop of London on 20 th May 1839. It was part of an initiative to provide seven large, modern cemeteries to ring the city of London. The inner-city cemeteries, mostly the graveyards of individual churches, had long been unable to cope with the number of burials and were seen as a health hazard and an undignified way to treat the dead. The first inhumation at Highgate Cemetery took place on the 26 th May, and was of Elizabeth Jackson, a 36 year old spinster of Golden Square in Soho.

    D(ante) G(abriel) Rossetti (1828-1882) - original name Gabriel Charles Dante Rossetti Brother of poet Christina Rossetti , painter and poet too, who was in the 1840s one of the founding members of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood. Although the movement started to lose its attraction by the mid-1850s, new disciples Edward Burne-Jones and William Morris brought with them fresh enthusiasm. Rossetti's poems are distinguished by fantasy, leading the reader to times past, to medieval colour, Arthurian legend, and Dantesque mysticism. I have been here before,
    But when or how I cannot tell;
    I know the grass beyond the door,
    The sweet keen smell,
    The sighing sound, the lights around the shore.

    (from 'Sudden Light', 1881) For many years Rossetti was known only as a painter. On the other hand he had to face for some time the problem that his paintings were not bought. He idealized his subjects, and used literary themes of medieval romances. His early poems, such as 'The Blessed Damozel', a highly symbolic work, and 'My Sister's Sleep', in which death visits a family on a Christmas Eve, were published in the Pre-Raphaelite magazine The Germ in 1850. "I said, "Full knowledge does not grieve: / This which upon my spirit dwells / Perhaps would have been sorrow else: / But I am glad 'tis Christmas Eve." (from 'My Sister's Sleep') The publication survived for only four issues. Rossetti enjoyed a modest success as a writer when his translations in THE EARLY ITALIAN POETS appeared in 1861. Also the art critic Ruskin started to buy his paintings and spread Rossetti's reputation.
