Museum Tinguely

Basel, , CH Switzerland
With about 150 loans from international museums and many privately owned works that are very seldom on public display, this exhibition at the Tinguely Museum is the first opportunity for people in Switzerland to see the original works of Kurt Schwitters (1887 – 1948) since 1971. Although relatively unknown in Switzerland, Kurt Schwitters is among the outstanding artistic pioneers of the first half of the 20th century. After the First World War he made the provocative statement that "one can use waste material to shout out loud", and from then on he employed everyday materials and objets trouvés in his collages and assemblages. In 1919 he invented his own artistic movement, Merz; the term is taken from the bank name "Kommerz- und Privatbank". From now on he grouped together all aspects of his very varied artistic activities – painting, sculpture, architecture, poetry, drama, typography and happenings – under the heading of Merz. With his programmatic idea of a "total Merz vision of the world", embracing all areas of life and art, he set an example for the thinking and creative work of many artists of the post-war generation. Together with Marcel Duchamp, Kurt Schwitters was Jean Tinguely’s most important artistic role model: "I was … completely ‘schwittered’, Schwitters was my hero," said Tinguely.

MERZBARN - THE LEGACY
KURT SCHWITTERS IN ENGLAND Working Group Preserving the Merz Barn Future plans include the possible acquisition of the Cylinders Estate site of the original Merz Barn at Elterwater, near Ambleside in the Lake District. It is hoped to raise funding for this purpose through foundations, private sponsorship, the Arts Council and the HLF (Heritage Lottery Fund), to purchase the site and preserve the Merz Barn building, to make it more widely accessible to the general public and for future generations. On a nearby site it is also hoped to establish a dedicated Merz Barn and Kurt Schwitters in England Study Centre, with an electronic archive and photographic display documenting the history of the Merz Barn, with links to important international Schwitters archives and public collections in London, Hanover and New York. The committee is working on this proposal in partnership with the Armitt Library, Ambleside.

Kurt Schwitters Archives
Kurt Schwitters Ôuvre List The Kurt Schwitters Archives in the Sprengel Museum Hannover were set up in 1994 and contain the most comprehensive documentation of the artistic work of Kurt Schwitters (1887 - 1948). The archives were put together by the artist's son, Ernst Schwitters, and are the source of the Òuvre list being drawn up in the Sprengel Museum Hannover. The Sprengel Museum Hannover is always very pleased to receive information about privately or publicly owned work by Schwitters. Please contact the Sprengel Museum Hannover, Dr Karin Orchard or Dr Isabel Schulz, Kurt-Schwitters-Platz, 30169 Hannover, Germany, T +49 511 16 84 - 46 48 /1684 - 62 12, Fax +49 511 16 84 -50 93. All information will, of course, be handled with the utmost discretion. Kurt Schwitters was one of the outstanding artists of the 1920s. Including numerous works on permanent loan, the Sprengel Museum Hannover has more than 108 original works by Schwitters. The Schwitters Archives in the Stadtbibliothek (Municipal Library) contain numerous personal documents, his correspondence, and writing by and about Kurt Schwitters. So what could be more appropriate than to collect information and documents about the life and work of this internationally important modern artist in his native city, Hanover. In 1993 the artist's son, Ernst Schwitters, handed over the archives concerning his father's artistic Òuvre to the Sprengel Museum Hannover, on condition that the museum continue to add to them and look after them. For some 40 years Ernst Schwitters, whose starting point was his father's voluminous legacy, with which he had been entrusted, worked on a photographic and written documentation of all the work known to him. The archives are in chronological order and currently list some 3,000 works.

REFERENCE LINKS PRINT EMAIL Schwitters, Kurt Schwitters, SHVIHT uhrs, Kurt (1887-1948), was a German artist known for creating pictures out of glued paper and other objects. These works are called collages. In 1918, Schwitters became involved with the dada art movement. The dadaists believed that significant art could be created from accidental and shocking events. Much dada art was political and attacked Western social institutions. Schwitters, in contrast, created a personal and nonpolitical art form he called Merz. The Merz works were collages made from paper, paint, and everyday objects, such as stamps and bus tickets. Schwitters's desire to blend art and life led him to turn his homes into a work of art. He attached printed matter and rubbish, such as driftwood and wheel parts, to the walls, and called the houses Merzbauten (Merz structures).

52. Kurt Schwitters In Cumbria
A brief biography of kurt schwitters in Cumbria (the Lake District).
http://www.visitcumbria.com/schwitters.htm
'Kurt Schwitters'
Kurt Schwitters (June 20, 1887 - January 8, 1948) was a German painter who was born in Hannover, Germany. He developed his own style of abstract art which he called Merz (from an advertisement for the Commerz und Privatbank). His art developed to the extent that he is now acknowledged as the twentieth century's greatest exponent of collage. Though not a direct participant in Dada activities, he deployed Dada ideas in his work, such as his Merz works — art pieces built up of found objects; some were very small, some took the form of large constructions, or 'installations'. The Sprengel Museum in Hanover has a reconstruction of the best known of these installations, called Merzbau, which was a redesign of at least four rooms in Schwitters's house in Hanover. The original Hanover Merzbau was destroyed by allied bombing in 1943. Like most German artists, Schwitters was driven out of Germany by the Nazis, and after a spell in Norway, in 1945 he moved with his young companion, Edith Thomas, to Ambleside. Here, financed by the Museum of Modern Art in New York, he started on a new Merzbau in a small stone barn in Elterwater, that came to be known as the Merz barn. At his death he had completed only one wall, The finished structure was removed to prevent deterioration and is now on display at the Hatton Gallery in Newcastle.

A real surprise in Ambleside is the discovery that the unique master of collage, Kurt Schwitters, lived in Ambleside later in his life. The Armitt Museum in Ambleside pays due homage to this renowned artist, and several of his works are displayed here. Well worth checking out! Kurt Schwitters was certainly absorbed by Cubism, Constructivism, Dadaism and to some extent surrealism, but chose his own way which he called 'Merz', something cast-off like junk where items of the everyday were appropriated and evolved from the banal to art. A prophetic journey which influenced the shape of 20th century art.

Frank Stella and Kurt Schwitters
One wrestles with massive industrial scrap like animals that have escaped their cages. The other turns a fragment of a word into the totality of his art. One demands an art apart from and larger than life. The other slowly amasses the record of a civilization. Frank Stella and Kurt Schwitters One insists that he has never stopped painting. So how can his constructions, now unpainted, move freely in the round? The other gives his medium, collage, a nonsense name. So how can he sustain painting as a basic creature comfort? Two lovely gallery shows get one puzzling over a gap of over half a century. I ended the spring of 2003 wondering at the simplicity of such words as painting or appropriation . Thanks to exhibitions in 2005 and 2006, extending one's view Stella's career at either end, one can keep puzzling even longer. A postscript even has me imagining Stella as architect
Defying gravity
Frank Stella has remained his own man, and you know men. His early black paintings, starting before 1960, still look defiantly simplistic. They assert their presence quite as much as modernist painting. The industrial-strength oils pick up where Jackson Pollock's enamel house paint left off. Black, defined sometimes as the absence of light, positively glows. Between stripes, the unpainted canvas shines with a softer white.

Kurt Schwitters
Printer Friendly Version What springs to mind when trying to characterize his personality is one word: 'paradox'. While challenging the world with his collages, his humorous poems and literature, his bourgeois lifestyle amazed all his friends and admirers. The way he dressed was conventional, yet he himself never was. He lived in a bourgeois house inside which he created the most amazing cubistic-constructivist architectural sphere, his so called Merzbau http://www.merzbau.org/Schwitters.html . Despite being close to the Dadaists: one of his life long friends was Jean Arp http://www.merzbau.org/Schwitters.html http://www.soroptimist.de/anna.htm , which he himself translated into English http://www.soroptimist.de/eanna.htm , is proof of this. He had his very own approach to art. It started with a picture created out of all sorts of scraps, which he called 'Merz picture'. In his house in Hannover in Waldhausenstrasse he collected works of art by friends and colleagues in just the same way as he collected all sorts of thrown away items that he picked up in the streets of Hannover, or on trains, buses and in public buildings. He turned them into new works of art in his famous collages. The art of hammering, gluing and sticking together his findings he called 'merzen'.
