Kurt Schwitters is generally acknowledged as the twentieth century's greatest master of collage. Just as collage is essentially the medium of irony, so Schwitters' life is characterized by paradox and enigma. Born in Hanover, the only child of affluent parents, he was a loner in his youth, plagued by epileptic attacks, introverted and insecure, and as a student at the Dresden Academy of Art he proved as apt as he was unimaginative. Although his contact with Expressionist artists in Hannover in 1916 gave him more confidence to develop his own style, even his most impressive works (such as Mountain Graveyard ) were little more than imitations of his contemporaries.

Though not a direct participant in Dada activities, he employed Dada ideas in his work, such as his Merz works — art pieces built up of found objects; some were very small, some took the form of large constructions, or what would later in the 20th century be called installations . The Sprengel Museum in Hanover has a reconstruction of the best known of these installations, called Merzbau , which was a redesign of at least four rooms in Schwitters's house in Hannover. (These were not in his apartment, but on the ground floor, in the attic and possibly in the basement.) The original Merzbau was destroyed in an air raid during World War II . According to Schwitters

Kurt Schwitters (1887 - 1948)
"The ambition was Expressionist, the means Constructivist, the results - largly Dadaist"
Kurt Schwitters was born in Hannover in 1887, the son of a well off boutique owner. His families borgeois standing was strenthened by his fathers miserly conduct - a trait inherited by Kurt who proudly never spent a penny on his wife's clothes.
From 1909-14 he attended the Dresden art school where he began his artistic career painting slavishly naturalistic pictures. His academic work was conventional and unadventurous although he did write a dissertation on abstract art (now lost).
In later life Schwitters put his artistic development into handy, discreet, pocket sized catagories:-
1909-14 - Academic Painting
1914-17 - Impressionism
1917 - Expressionism
1917-18 - Abstraction
1918 -48 - Merz Kurt Schwitters was the odd man out of Dada - not officially a dadaist but still vital to the dada movement. In 1918 he made visits to Berlin where he became friends with Arp and Hausmann. Then one night in a cafe he approached Tristan Tzara and Hans Richter:
"My name is Kurt Schwitters...I am a painter and I nail my pictures together...I should like to join the Club Dada"

KURT SCHWITTERS' MERZBAU: THE CATHEDRAL OF EROTIC MISERY
Elizabeth Burns Gamard
Princeton Architectural Press
ISBN 1-56898-136-8
Billed as the first in-depth study in English of the work of the German artist, Kurt Schwitters (1887-1948), Elizabeth Burns Gamard's book focuses on the Hanover Merzbau, a unique installation in the history of modern art. Schwitters was an associate of the Dadaists Huelsenbeck and Tristan Tzara, but Merz was a one-man extension of Dada, not a group. Merz took its name from "an arbitrary and effectively meaningless word fragment culled from the German word Kommerzbank (Bank of Commerce) which appeared by chance in an early collage…" (pg 26). Schwitters' personal continuation of Dada, Merz embraced poetry and architecture, as well as collages and sculpture, and was advanced by Schwitters through his magazine, Merz Die Kathedrale des erotischen Elends (The Cathedral of Erotic Misery) or KdeE - later called the Merzbau - was a combination of collage, sculpture, and architecture. Begun in the corner of Schwitters' studio around 1923 (the date is problematical), it gradually expanded into the family living area.

... Present Day
Kurt Schwitters was certainly the odd man out of German Dada. He lived, not in Berlin like the others, but in Hanover where he created a self-enclosed world from his many varied artistic outpourings. At a fairly early stage he was seen by the more politically motivated Dadaists as too petit bourgeois for those revolutionary times, but Schwitters was always his own man and thrived in this relative isolation. As he was not an accepted Dadaist, he started to call himself and his artistic output "Merz" (from a cut-up fragment of newspaper that had originally read "Kommerz".)
Whereas the raw material of most of the Dada montage of the times was photographic and relevant, Schwitters took his from the streets. The montages, collages and assemblages that he constructed from all this gathered refuse have an extraordinary integrity of vision, but they are certainly not in any way political, and it is easy to understand how Schwitters' comfortable artistic sensibility may have alienated the likes of Heartfield and Grosz.

KS - An Appreciation by Russell Mills
The reason why the art of Kurt Schwitters was pivotal to the development of art in the 20th Century was relatively simple. He took two dimensional collage and made it three dimensional and called the new art from Merz. Born in Hanover in 1887, he studied art at Dresden, but it was not until the Dada movement of 1916 that he finally liberated himself from conventional art. Schwitters took from Dada the freedom to use what materials he wanted to in his pictorial compositions. He used bits of rubbish, bits society throws away, and by using litter from the gutter he challenged our value systems. He was a man with extraordinary imagination, and although he drew on the Dada philosophy, he rejected its basic negativity. It could be said that after his death Merz inspired the Pop Art movement of the 1950s/1960s. One of the most important works of art he created was a sculpture which he called 'The Cathedral of Erotic Misery', or his Merzbau. The sculpture with its phallic column constantly evolved. It was unfinished because it was unfinishable; it was environmental and engulfing in scope, but its significance was that it marked the birth of installation or conceptual art that we see today. The Hanover Merzbau was destroyed by bombs in 1943.
