Despite his age and the fact that he was better known for the quality of his portraits and his paintings of high society, his reputation led to Sargent (1856-1925) being commissioned to do this commemorative painting. In 1918, he went to northern France and during one of his journeys from Arras to Doullens, he saw groups of soldiers blinded by projections of mustard gas. He used this as a subject for a naturalist allegorical frieze depicting a line of young men with their eyes bandaged, several of them apparently in agony, as they move forward among the bodies of other soldiers lying on the ground. The vast horizontal format of this painting gives effectiveness to this composition; Sargent had drawn studies on this theme before bringing them together to obtain this procession of painful shadows.

Seattle, WA, USA
On the heels of the wildly successful John Singer Sargent retrospective that was organized by Londons Tate Gallery and traveled to the National Gallery, Washington, D.C., and the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, in 1999, the Seattle Art Museum will host its own Sargent exhibition in the West Coasts first major comprehensive exhibition of the artists impressive oeuvre. John Singer Sargent is curated at SAM by Trevor Fairbrother, Jon and Mary Shirley Curator of Modern Art, and will be on view in SAM’s Special Exhibition Galleries Dec. 14, 2000—March 18, 2001. Fairbrother is an internationally recognized scholar of Sargents work. He has produced numerous publications about Sargent and recently lectured in each city that hosted the Tate-organized exhibition. Fairbrother has written a new book, John Singer Sargent: The Sensualist, published by Seattle Art Museum and the Yale University Press, to accompany SAMs exhibition. The exhibition showcases The Wertheimer Portraits of John Singer Sargent, a traveling exhibition organized by the Jewish Museum in New York City. Included are a dozen grand portraits of the London art dealer Asher Wertheimer and his family, painted between 1898 and 1908. Prior to the current exhibition, the paintings had not been exhibited together since they hung in the Wertheimer familys opulent residence more than 70 years ago.

Sargent was the foremost portraitist in London and the United States at the turn of the century, but by 1910 he undertook portraiture only rarely. During the preceding decade watercolor had become an important aspect of his production, and he frequently looked to this medium as a means for personal expression, a respite from the constraints of mural commissions and portrait painting. Muddy Alligators seems to have been such a diversion, painted to offset the frustration of a work in progress: a portrait of John D. Rockefeller at his patron's winter home in Ormond Beach, Florida. A seemingly unlikely subject for a fashionable painter, alligators caked with mud nevertheless presented a pictorial challenge that recurs in Sargent's oeuvre: the depiction of light and shadow on sun-drenched forms. This writhing, menacing mass of serpentine creatures evoked intriguing possibilities of surface and texture, to which he brought to bear the resources of his bravura technique. A number of preparatory sketches exist for

Richard Rodriguez of the Pacific News Service considers the painting of American painter, John Singer Sergent.
RICHARD RODRIGUEZ: This year, first at the National Gallery in Washington, then at the Fine Arts Museum in Boston, Americans have had a chance to reappraise the lifework of John Singer Sargent, a fellow countryman who spent lived of his life in Europe. Little Johnny Sargent, born in Florence, in 1856, grew up during the same decade that Walt Whitman published "Leaves of Grass" and Samuel Morse patented the telegraph. His American parents had escaped their green and raw homeland, looking for the old, the refined. The family traveled constantly from Italy to France, Switzerland, Germany. One of his most beautiful and poignant oils is of a hotel room, his frequent address. He trained in Paris; was indebted to impressionism, especially to Claude Monet. Look at these beautiful pictures of flowers and the Italian light. It would be as a high society portrait painter that Sargent would achieve his renown.

John Singer Sargent, early 1880s; Private Collection "Sargent's studio is always a sociable place. Unlike many artists, the presence of visitors or companions does not disturb him when he is painting. He seems to work without obvious exertion even in his intensest activity. "When his models are resting, he fills the gap by strumming on the piano or guitar, " says one of his friends; "his manner while at work is that of a man of consummate address, and does not show physical or mental effort." ...Skill and accomplishment in every field excite his admiration, but his own creed is stable and unaffected by transitory influences."

John singer sargent, painter and watercolorist
A discussion of the life and art of John Singer Sargent, with special emphasis on his watercolor paintings.
John Singer Sargent, an American artist, was born in 1856 in Florence, Italy. His family was American, but through his childhood their nomadic lifestyle took him all over Europe, and gave him a great love of traveling. Sargent went on to spend much of his life in Europe. He has been both celebrated and criticized, and both fame and scandal marked his career, but his importance to the world of art cannot be denied. Opinion on Sargent fell in as broad a range as is possible. His Venetian watercolors have been praised to the skies by some, while others accused him of being a "travel-book illustrator" rather than a true artist. His oils were criticized as too flamboyant and his brushstrokes, unrestrained. However, these criticisms from art critics did not deter Sargent’s wealthy patrons. He painted people of all ages, primarily of wealthy families and/or prominent social backgrounds. Sargent’s reputation grew with association to this high-class clientele and soon those wishing to establish their own or their family's reputations in high society sought him out for fashionable portraits. In 1884 one of these portraits, a painting of Madame Pierre Gautreau, caused a huge scandal when it was exhibited. The woman posing was portrayed in too alluring a manner, it was said, and the portrait was paired with a portrait of the man it was rumored she was involved in an affair with. Sargent repainted parts of the portrait, and renamed it Madame X, but the damage had been done. He and several others were forced to leave Paris and wait for the scandal to die down. This scandal did not, however, diminish Sargent's popularity as a portraitist. Both before and after the scandal of Madame X Sargent was considered the most important portraitist of his time. Among those he painted before his death in 1925 are Henry James, John D. Rockefeller, Sr. President Theodore Roosevelt, and members of any number of wealthy and well-known families.

John Singer Sargent and Robert Louis Stevenson
Magazine Antiques Nov, 2004 by Leslie Furth John Singer Sargent had a capacity to idealize his portrait subjects that few painters of his era could rival. He could also tantalize and mystify, as he did in Robert Louis Stevenson and His Wife (Pl. I). Why did Sargent paint the celebrated author in this strange way? It is among the most daring and unorthodox portraits he ever created. His attraction to the charismatic writer, whom he described as "the most intense creature that I had ever met," (1) was such that he was prepared to risk public censure to commemorate Stevenson's eccentric personality and way of life. [FIGURE 1 OMITTED] [ILLUSTRATION OMITTED] [FIGURE 2 OMITTED] In 1885 Sargent was in a time of crisis and confusion serious enough that he considered giving up painting altogether, as he confided to his friend the writer Edmund Gosse (1849-1928). (2) This low point must have arisen in part because of the scandal caused in the Paris Salon of 1884 when he displayed his notorious portrait of Virginie Amelie Avengo Gautreau (1859-1915) entitled Madame X (1883-1884; Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York City).

John Singer Sargent: Head of an Arab
...with John Howard Sanden In 1891, John Singer Sargent traveled to the Holy Land and the Middle East to gain background material for his Boston Public Library murals. This dramatic head of a bearded man in Arab headress resulted from that trip. John Howard Sanden replicates Sargent's brilliant masterpiece, with a continuous commentary. Sargent clearly reveled in achieving the rich bronze tones of the swarthy complexion, the deep shadows which give volume to the head, the fierce intensity of the expression, and the broadly realized turban and garment details.
