John Singer Sargent's painting Gassed hangs in the Imperial War Museum in London; the canvas is over seven feet high and twenty feet long. This impressive painting depicts soldiers blinded by gas being led in lines back to the hospital tents and the dressing stations; the men lie on the ground all about the tents waiting for treatment. "With mustard gas the effects did not become apparent for up to twelve hours. But then it began to rot the body, within and without. The skin blistered, the eyes became extremely painful and nausea and vomiting began. Worse, the gas attacked the bronchial tubes, stripping off the mucous membrane. The pain was almost beyond endurance and most cases had to be strapped to their beds. Death took up to four or five weeks. A nurse wrote: I wish those people who write so glibly about this being a holy war and the orators who talk so much about going on no matter how long the war lasts and what it may mean, could see a caseto say nothing of ten casesof mustard gas in its early stagescould see the poor things burnt and blistered all over with great mustard-coloured suppurating blisters, with blind eyes . . . all sticky and stuck together, and always fighting for breath, with voices a mere whisper, saying that their throats are closing and they know they will choke." This passage is from John Ellis

An Aesthetic Realism Discussion
SARGENT'S "MADAME X";
OR, ASSERTION AND RETREAT IN WOMAN
by Lynette Abel
I have loved this portrait of Madame Pierre Gautreau by the American painter, John Singer Sargent, titled Madame X, since the first time I saw it. Aesthetic Realism taught me that what makes a work of art beautiful is what we are hoping for in our lives. "All beauty," Eli Siegel stated, "is a making one of opposites; and the making one of opposites is what we are going after in ourselves." I have come to see that Sargent's dramatic portrait makes a one of opposites I was longing to make sense of in myself. In his essay "A Woman Is the Oneness of Aesthetic Opposites," Mr. Siegel writes about 15 pairs of opposites in women. And this is what he writes about "Advancing: Recessive":
    Towards something is in the feminine mind importantly: the future as outward and to be visited and had. But how much retreat is in woman, too, the unseen sinking, the leaving for a previously chosen background.
I think Sargent's Madame X is an opportunity to study these opposites, which all women have. Sargent shows a haughty woman, ostentatious in her black satin dress with its jeweled strapsit reveals and hides at once. This portrait, when it first appeared at the Paris Salon in l884, shocked people and caused such a scandal that Sargent had to withdraw it. Yet, if all this painting showed was ostentation, I believe Sargent wouldn't have said, when he sold it to the Metropolitan Museum in l9l6, "I suppose it is the best thing I have done." It was at this time that Sargent asked that the title of the painting be changed to

    A True Visual Sensualist
    Monday, Mar. 29, 1999 By ROBERT HUGHES Article Tools Print Email Reprints Sphere addthis_url = location.href; addthis_title = document.title; addthis_pub = 'timecom'; RSS John Singer Sargent (1856-1925) was the last great society portraitistthe Van Dyck of his time, as Auguste Rodin was the first to say. Twenty years ago, to confess an admiration (however sneaking) for his work was to invite incredulity. Sargent? That flatterer of the Edwardian rich? That fat-cat holdover, that facile topographer of the social Alps, that living irrelevance to the concerns of modernism? But what goes around comes around. Sargent's reputation is back as though it had never gone away. Once again, if one can judge from the attendance at the Sargent show at the National Gallery of Art in Washington (through May 31, and then through the summer at the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston), he has a big public. Are its crowded galleries just another symptom of the explosion in the size of the public for U.S. museums? Or is there a new audience out there for the pictorial virtuosity Sargent represents? The latter, one hopes, but it's hard to tell.

The son of American expatriate parents, Sargent had been encouraged by his mother to study art in Florence. In 1874, he entered the Paris studio of portraitist Carolus-Duran and the ‰cole des Beaux-Arts. He was influenced by Velazquez and joined the Impressionists circles (he was a close friend of Claude Monet). At the 1884 Paris Salon, he showed his now famous picture, Madame X . Lacking commissions in Paris, he moved to London in 1886, where he remained until his death, except for summer excursions on the Continent and in the United States.

http://www.nyu.edu/greyart/exhibits/sargent/info/body_info.html
The expatriate American artist John Singer Sargent was a prolific draughtsman throughout a long, industrious career. Although he is best known today for his precisely rendered portrait drawings and his virtuoso watercolors of Venice, Sargent's graphic output encompassed virtually every category of subject matter including allegory, history, still life, and scenes of daily life. The drawings were done for a variety of reasons including copying old masters, spontaneous on-site studies from nature, and large-scale life studies from studio models. A survey of Sargent's graphics presents both the familiar public face of the celebrated portraitist and the more private side of the artist in the studio. Sargent was born in Florence to American parents in 1856. While the family made their home in Italy, they led a peripatetic existence, traveling regularly in Switzerland, France, Austria, and Germany. During these trips, Sargent received his first drawing lessons from his mother, a Philadelphia patrician who was an amateur watercolorist. His first sketches were done when he was four. Sargent's formal training began in 1868 in Switzerland with Joseph Farquharson, a British artist. In Rome the following summer he worked in the studio of an American painter, Carl Welsch. The young artist conformed to an accepted academic regimen, drawing from books and copying from paintings and sculpture. Carefully articulated landscape studies were drawn during sketching outings, on longer trips or in the environs around Florence.

John Singer Sargent in Boston

Four major cultural institutions in Boston are celebrating the career of John Singer Sargent during the summer of 1999. The Museum of Fine Arts is presenting the retrospective "John Singer Sargent" in conjunction with the opening of the renovated rotunda containing Sargent's murals. The Boston Public Library's program of special events, "Sargent in Context at the Boston Public Library," centers on "The Triumph of Religion," his large mural project at the library. Harvard University's Fogg Art Museum presents "Sargent in the Studio: Drawings, Sketchbooks and Oil Sketches" and the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum will show "Sargent: The Late Landscapes." For details on the schedule for these events, see Boston's Summer of Sargent Sargent's relationship with Boston spanned his entire working life. Boston was the location of his first one man show in 1888 and was the site of his three major mural commissions (the Boston Public Library, the Museum of Fine Arts, and Harvard University's Widener Library) which Sargent created at the culmination of his career. In the May, 1999 broadcast, Greater Boston Arts interviews Art Historian Mary Crawford Volk about John Singer Sargent's life and work. The following are excerpts from this interview, designed to provide some context for Boston's Summer of Sargent.
