An expatriate American, he showed remarkable technical precocity as a painter. After studying with Carolus-Duran, he achieved a great reputation for his portraits, employing a style that could be seen as derived from Velázquez by way of Manet . Moving in the circle of the Impressionists , he came to know most of them, and they reacted to his work in varying ways. Degas , as might have been expected, was brutally dismissive; Pissarro , in sending his son to see him in London, where Sargent spent the major part of his working life, described him as `an adroit performer'; but with Monet he had a close and mutually profitable relationship. In the 1880s he began to paint landscapes that were overtly Impressionist in technique and approach, despite a certain superficiality. At this time he visited Monet at Giverny on several occasions, painting two memorable portraits of him: Claude Monet Painting at the Edge of a Wood (c.1885; Tate Gallery, London) and Claude Monet in his Bateau-Atelier (1887; National Gallery of Art, Washington). Although Monet was later to deny that Sargent was an Impressionist, this was unjust, especially in relation to some of his works in the 1880s and 1890s. Indeed, Sargent's technique for painting large canvases out of doors, as evinced in

Welcome
John Singer Sargent
John Singer Sargent (1856-1925) was an American painter who became the most celebrated portraitist of his time (or any time since) with his glamorous style influenced by Velazquez and the impressionists.
Sargent was born in Florence, travelled widely during his childhood, and lived most of his adult life in Europe, yet considered himself an American; he once turned down a knighthood from King Edward VII because it would have meant giving up his American citizenship.

  • Portrait of an artist Trevor Fairbrother's new book shows that John Singer Sargent was not only a painter of the rich but a sensualist in everything he did. By Glen Helfand Americans don't quite know how to appreciate their artists especially when their work is sexy. Think about all the controversy that surrounded Robert Mapplethorpe's elegantly explicit photographs. To look back a century, esteemed portrait painter John Singer Sargent faced similar public outcry over a painting of a pale statuesque beauty, "Madame X," whose gown strap brazenly slipped down her shapely shoulder. Yet Sargent, an American who lived most of his life in Europe, somehow is remembered as a detached observer of the stiff, late-19th century upper class. Curator Trevor Fairbrother, a longtime Sargent scholar, has undertaken a welcome project of infusing the dry realm of art history with glamour and eroticism with "John Singer Sargent: The Sensualist." In this sumptuous book, which accompanies an exhibition at the Seattle Art Museum (through March 18), Fairbrother shifts the view of Sargent as a technically accomplished yet clinical artist to someone who very much appreciated physical pleasures and captured them in lush, ravishing paintings and drawings.

Sargent, John Singer (1856-1925) Everyone who was anyone during the turn into the twentieth century had a portrait painted by John Singer Sargent. The wealthy, famous, and noble on both sides of the Atlantic flocked to the London studio of this expatriate American, sealing his reputation as one of the most famous and recognizable of American artists. Born January 12, 1856 in Florence, Italy to American parents, Sargent lived a vagabond childhood, traveling throughout Europe with his parents. In 1874 he went to Paris to study painting. A trip to Madrid in 1879 inspired the masterpiece of his youth, El Jaleo El Jaleo depicts the passion and sensuality of flamenco dance and music. Earthy and exotic, it created a scandal when it was exhibited, establishing a pattern whereby Sargent earned fame (and occasionally infamy) by shocking the artistic establishment and the social arbiters of his day. Controversy followed other early portraits, such as that of gynecologist

    The Gondola
As a city of islands, Venice was unique to Sargent in many ways, and he took advantage of one of these unique features while painting his second series. http://www.gondolavenezia.it/homeng.asp ). It is no wonder then that Sargent would choose to paint from gondolas so as not to make simple copies of works painted before him. On the Zattere Steps of a Palace (1903), where Sargent focuses on the architectural qualities of doorsteps from an oblique angle. However, in addition to looking at these structures, the gondola perspective could also allow Sargent to depict the waters of Venice as seen in the watercolor. Sargent portrays the texture of the water as well as the intriguing color created by a combination of light and the movement of the water due to the bustling boats. This is particularly apparent in his On the Canal (1903), which presents the blue-green water, the gondoliers working hard to push the gondolas along, and the characteristic architecture standing erect behind the motion in the foreground. It is an important juxtaposition of movement and stasis, which Sargent attributed to an architecturally unchanging Venice. Sargent, John Singer.

The frames from Sargent's Paris years, 1874 to 1885, remain to be documented. They depend heavily on standard French types of the period, judging from the relatively few early pictures which retain their original frames. In the Luxembourg Gardens of 1879 (no. 16; Philadelphia Museum of Art) has a typical heavy Salon frame in the Louis XIV style, ornamented with a running pattern of flowers set between paired leaves. That the ornament was cast in plaster rather than carved in wood is clearly visible in areas of damage. Another frame of this type may be found on the almost contemporary Rehearsal of the Pasdeloup Orchestra (no. 15; Museum of Fine Arts, Boston).

From his first exhibit in the Salon of 1878 he received early recognition, and by 1884, when he moved to London, he already enjoyed a high reputation as a portrait painter. He spent most of the remainder of his life there, painting the dashing portraits of American and English social celebrities for which he is famous. For a considerable period of time, Sargent was the world's best-known and most highly paid portrait painter. In 1890 he was commissioned by the architect Charles McKim to paint a series of murals

John Singer Sargent was born on 12 January 1856. He was an official war artist in , commissioned to paint a work symbolizing cooperation between Britain and America during World War 1. A leading portraitist of high society, he was not known for his interest in politics, and yet his paintings of war allow the viewer to glimpse the Janus-faced brotherhood of warriors in class society and its political implications.

Tommies Bathing, 1918 It is solidarity with comrades, much more than loyalty to an abstract idea of nation or obedience to their superiors, that keeps men at war.
"He didn't have to go to Iraq. He chose to go. He wanted to be with his brothers." These are the words of the clearly distraught and heartbroken mother of Thomas , a marine recently killed in Iraq, describing her son's fatal decision to extend his enlistment in order to deploy with his unit. Of course, his family tried to convince him otherwise, but Thomas was adamant that "abandoning" his comrades as they headed into harm's way was not an option. . . . We fight, then, neither to achieve victory nor to kill an "enemy." We fight and, like Thomas, we die, because we love and could not live with the guilt and the shame of abandoning our brothers.
