Carolus-Duran's atelier was progressive, dispensing with the traditional academic approach which required careful drawing and underpainting, in favor of the alla prima method of working directly on the canvas with a loaded brush, derived from Diego Vel¡zquez . It was an approach which relied on the proper placement of tones of paint. In 1879 Sargent painted a portrait of Carolus-Duran; the virtuoso effort met with public approval, and announced the direction his mature work would take. Its showing at the

A painter of stupefying energy and force, he ran a workshop, listened to music as he painted, did the classical scholarship for cycles of paintings that required erudite references, conversed easily in six languages and discharged ambassadorial missions of great delicacy - his second wife, Helen Fourment, was delivered of his last child nine months after his death. One of my companions, the painter David Reed, said, meditatively, that most artists he knows strive to emulate Van Gogh : "Maybe we ought to try to be like Rubens instead." "Still, those who hold briefs for the artistic benignity of suffering might ponder the fact that Sargent's one salient episode of serious reversal - the outrage that his great

John Singer Sargent , the son of an American doctor, was born in Florence in 1856. He studied painting in Italy and France and in 1884 caused a sensation at the Paris Salon with his painting of Madame Gautreau. Exhibited as Madame X , people complained that the painting was provocatively erotic.
The scandal persuaded Sargent to move to England and over the next few years established himself as the country's leading portrait painter. This included portraits of Joseph Chamberlain Frank Swettenham (1904) and Henry James (1913). Sargent made several visits to the USA where as well as portraits he worked on a series of decorative paintings for public b uildings such as the Boston Public Library (1890) and the Museum of Fine Arts (1916).
In 1918 Sargent was commissioned to paint a large painting to symbolize the co-operation between British and American forces during the First World War . Sargent was sent to France with the British painter

Short biography of the American expatriate known for his career as a portraitist and for his notorious painting Madame X.
Early Years
Following an apprenticeship with Emile Auguste Carolus-Duran, a famed and innovative portrait painter, Sargent visited the United States and found his first portrait subject. His painting of family friend Frances Watts was his entry into the 1877 Paris Salon and set him on his path of doing portraiture of the rich and famous.
The Portrait Painter
Sargent experienced early success as a portrait painter in Europe, but found himself in disfavor following the 1884 Paris exhibition of Madame X . This famed Sargent portrait was a notorious scandal at the time, showing the wife of banker Pierre Gautreau in a scantily strapped black velvet gown, with ivory white shoulders and cleavage openly displayed.

About This Item Edited by Elaine Kilmurray and Richard Ormond The remarkable portraits for which John Singer Sargent is most famous are only one aspect of a career that included landscapes, watercolors, figure subjects, and murals. Even within portraiture, his style ranged from bold experiments to studied formality. And the subjects of his paintings were as varied as his styles, including the leaders of fashionable society, rural laborers, city streets, remote mountains, and the front lines of World War I. This beautiful book surveys and evaluates the extraordinary range of Sargent’s work, and reproduces 155 of his paintings in color. It accompanies a spectacular international exhibition – the first major retrospective of the artist’s career since the memorial exhibitions that followed his death. Sargent (1856-1925) was a genuinely international figure. Born of American parents, he grew up in Europe and forged his early reputation in Paris. Later, he established himself in England and the United States as the leading portraitist of the day, and traveled widely in North America and the Middle East. Contributors to this book assess Sargent’s career in three essays. Richard Ormond presents a biographical sketch and, in a second essay, reviews Sargent’s development as an artist. Mary Crawford Volk explores his thirty-year involvement with painting murals-in particular the works at the Boston Public Library and the Boston Museum of Fine Arts that Sargent regarded as his greatest achievement.

John Singer Sargent Carolus-Duran Madame X, James McNeill Whistler . The scandal had damaged Sargent's reputation as a portrait painter, so he turned to landscapes painted in the plein air impressionist manner, and figure oils such as the poignantly saccharine Carnation, Lily, Lily, Rose (1885-86), one of the most striking studies of twilight ever painted. During a year long trip to the USA (Boston and New York) in 1887-88, he completed nearly forty society portrait commissions, and his fortunes completely revived in 1892 with his splendid and touching portrait of Lady Agnew of Lochnaw In my world, Sargent is among the greatest watercolor painters and the most underestimated painter of the 19th century. Technically there was nothing he could not do, that goes without saying. But judgments that he was superficial, conventional or facile are utterly stupid. Sargent used his brilliant technique to explore a uniquely modern artistic theme: time and subjective perception. In his mature paintings, he continually demonstrates the constructive and sketchy nature of our visual experience by the device of creating cohesive, detailed and convincing visual images from distinct, individualized brushstrokes. Principles of Psychology We are constantly selecting certain of our sensations as realities and degrading others to the status of signs of these. When we get one of the signs we think of the reality signified; and the strange thing is that then the reality ... is so interesting that it acquires an hallucinatory strength, which may even eclipse that of the relatively uninteresting sign and entirely divert our attention from the latter. ... Thus the faintest sensations will give rise to the preception of definite things if only they resemble those which the things are wont to arouse. ... The sense of sight, as we have seen in studying Space, is pregnant with illusions. ... No sense gives such fluctuating impressions of the same object as sight does. With no sense are we so apt to treat the sensations immediately given as mere signs; with none is the invocation from memory of a

John Singer Sargent John Singer Sargent was born on the 12th of January 1856 in Florence Italy. His parents had left America to live in Europe. Because the family constantly traveled, Sargent developed few ties to any one country. He spoke four languages, played the piano and mandolin expertly, and held a great knowledge of literature and art.

Brief article on the expatriate American artist best know for portraiture.
http://www.ibiblio.org/wm/paint/auth/sargent/
Sargent, John Singer
An expatriate American, he showed remarkable technical precocity as a painter. After studying with Carolus-Duran, he achieved a great reputation for his portraits, employing a style that could be seen as derived from Velázquez by way of Manet . Moving in the circle of the Impressionists , he came to know most of them, and they reacted to his work in varying ways. Degas , as might have been expected, was brutally dismissive; Pissarro , in sending his son to see him in London, where Sargent spent the major part of his working life, described him as `an adroit performer'; but with Monet he had a close and mutually profitable relationship. In the 1880s he began to paint landscapes that were overtly Impressionist in technique and approach, despite a certain superficiality. At this time he visited Monet at Giverny on several occasions, painting two memorable portraits of him: Claude Monet Painting at the Edge of a Wood (c.1885; Tate Gallery, London) and Claude Monet in his Bateau-Atelier (1887; National Gallery of Art, Washington). Although Monet was later to deny that Sargent was an Impressionist, this was unjust, especially in relation to some of his works in the 1880s and 1890s. Indeed, Sargent's technique for painting large canvases out of doors, as evinced in
