Biography:

During Albert Pinkham Ryder’s formal education, he contracted a serious illness that impaired his vision. Ryder used painting as a way to pass the time as he recovered, finding that he had some potential to paint seriously. He moved to New York in 1867 and studied under William Edgar Marshall. He then enrolled in the National Academy of Design and traveled to Europe several times. Becoming reclusive in his late life, Ryder converted his subject matter from landscapes to metaphysical paintings inspired by religion and poetry.

Encyclopedia Article Find Print E-mail Blog It Multimedia 1 item Albert Pinkham Ryder (1847-1917), American painter, whose art depicts richly imaginative personal visions. He was born in the whaling port of New Bedford, Massachusetts, and many of his works reflect an obsession with the sea. About 1870 he settled in New York City, where he studied briefly at the National Academy of Design. Despite this experience and several brief trips to Europe, his romantic, mystical style remained unaffected by outside influences. His technique involved thick applications of several coats of paint that were not allowed proper time to dry, topped by heavy coats of varnish. For this reason, many of his paintings have deteriorated badly. Ryder led a reclusive life and worked painstakingly, often repainting a composition many times. Thus, his works, which total about 160 canvases, are difficult to date. Ryder's landscapes and seascapes include

Siegfried and the Rhine Maidens, c. 1891 National Gallery of Art, Washington, D.C., Mellon Collection Hilton Als compared Rickie's Ghostyhead to the paintings of Georgia O'Keefe. I too am reminded of a painter's work by Rickie's music. Listening to Pirates, or Flying Cowboys evokes the canvases of great American artist Albert Pinkham Ryder, of whom Alexander Elliot, the art editor of Time magazine, referred to as "the greatest lyrical painter that this country has ever produced." Albert Pinkham Ryder found himself as an artist as the result of a debilitating illness. What makes this story even more dramatic than it might appear is that Ryder's illness concerned his sight! An infection followed a boyhood vaccination, and Ryder's sight was permanently damaged. Bright lights bothered him, and small detail was lost to his perception. Naturally this affected his schooling, and he was fortunate to graduate from grammar school. One day his father gave young Ryder a set of paints to cheer his spirits. "When my father placed the box of colors and brushes in my hands," Ryder wrote, "and I stood before my easel with its square of stretched canvas, I realized that I had in my possession the wherewith to create a masterpiece that would live throughout the coming ages. The great masters had no more!"

US painter. He was one of the most original US artists of the 19th century. His romantic landscapes, moonlit seascapes, and depictions of scenes from Shakespeare and Wagner are intense, poetic, and dreamlike. His best-known work, Death on a Pale Horse c. Born in New Bedford, Massachusetts, he studied briefly at the National Academy of Design but was largely self-taught as an artist. He visited Europe, but was unimpressed by its art, and steadfastly pursued his own highly original vision. He lived the life of a recluse in a New York apartment, very slowly painting and repainting his small pictures, the forms simplified, the golden-yellow colours, set off by sombre surroundings, giving the works a spectral luminosity. Sea paintings such as Flying Dutchman and Jonah and the Whale have caused him to be compared with his contemporary Herman Melville, the author of

He is best known for his brooding night scenes of the sea and dreamlike landscapes. His paintings are based on stories from the Bible, William Shakespeare, and other literary sources. Ryder conceived simple, bold designs, and he often used dark and pale tones in dramatic contrast. He laid paint on thickly, working on each painting for a long time, repainting until layers of color were built up.
