The French painter (1844-1910) was a late starter, getting the brushes out when he 40 years old, and didn't go to art school. Rousseau painted in a naive, primitive, or childlike manner, depicting people and nature scenes often set in the forest.
He was also confident in his art, quoted as saying "We are the two great painters of this era; you are in the Egyptian style, I in the modern style." to Pablo Picasso.
An exhibition is on at the Tate Modern in the United Kingdom between November 3 and February 5, 2006. There will be 50 works by Henri Rousseau, the first exhibition by the artist in the United Kingdom for eighty years!
Stumble in the jungle
"What a wonderful and wonderfully bad painter Henri Rousseau was. There is even something touching and gauche about the big, wonky signature that always decorates a corner of his paintings: it is as if the painter were amazed to find himself there." Guardian

    Biography for
    Henri Rousseau
advertisement photos board add contact details Date of Birth 21 May Laval, France Mini Biography Henri Rousseau (Le Douanier) was born on May 21, 1944, in Laval, Northern France. His father was a plumber. Young Rousseau finished the Lycee in Laval and started as a lawyer's clerk. From 1863-1868 he served in the French Army. From 1869-1893 Russeau worked in a toll booth on the edge of Paris, as a municipal toll collector. For that job he was called "Le Douanier" but he never really was a customs officer, but a second-class clerk; he was never promoted on his job and basically collected a fee from farmers coming to Paris markets.
Rousseau began painting in his forties. In 1884 he obtained a permit to sketch in the national museums and spent many hours sketching classical art masterpieces in the Louvre. His job as a toll collector gave him little income, but much time to paint. He also earned some cash as a street musician. Rousseau was self-taught, although he admitted he had received some advice from established Academic artists, including that of Jean-Leon Gerome. Rousseau was inspired by the jungle, but he never was there. His sources of imagination were illustrated books and visits to the Zoo and Botanical Gardens in Paris. He also used images from a drawing book of his daughter. He could paint bananas growing upside-down and in a few paintings he grouped animals from different continents, that in reality could never have been seen together. It was the genuine feeling and high decorative quality of his paintings that brought him attention from other artists.

Apollo ... June, 2004 by Nancy Ireson In March 1910, the critic Arsene Alexandre interviewed Henri Rousseau in his Montrouge studio, where the artist was working on one of his jungle pictures. As he was about to leave, the critic noticed an extraordinary canvas entitled Le Present et le Passe (Fig. 1), which he described for his readers. The image is autobiographical; it shows Rousseau and his second wife, both smartly dressed, in a landscape setting. Above the heads of these figures hover the ghostly presences of their former spouses; at the foot of the painting a poem is inscribed that explains how the couple will remember their lost loves. Noting Alexandre's interest, the Douanier added his own comments. 'It is a philosophical painting, said Henri Rousseau to me, 'it is a little spiritualist, isn't it?' (1)

Although he often copied art in the Louvre, Rousseau was essentially self-taught. He frequently strolled through the suburbs of Paris, sketching from nature. He wrote: "Nothing makes me happier than to contemplate nature and to paint it. Would you believe it that when I go out in the country and see all that sun, all that greenery and all those flowers, I sometimes say to myself: 'All that belongs to me, it does.'" 78. Jean Jacques Rousseau, 1712-1778
A biographical account of the 18th century philosopher, Jean Jacques rousseau, 17121778.
    http://www.historyguide.org/europe/rousseau.html
    Jean Jacques Rousseau, 1712-1778
God makes all things good; man meddles with them and they become evil. The most enigmatic of all the philosophes of the 18th century Enlightenment, the political philosopher, educationist and essayist, Jean Jacques Rousseau, was born at Geneva on June 28th, 1712. His mother died in childbirth. In 1722 his father, involved in a brawl, left him to the care of his relations. Without any formal education except his own reading of Plutarch's Lives and a collection of Calvinist sermons, he was employed first by a notary who found him incompetent and then by an engraver who treated him so poorly that in 1728 he ran away. Feigning enthusiasm for Catholicism, he was sent to Madame de Warens who, separated from her husband, became a convert to Catholicism and assisted other converts. She sent Rousseau to Turin to be baptized and there he eventually found employment with a shopkeeper's wife whose lover he became until her husband's return. After short spells as footman and secretary, he returned to Annecy and to Madame de Warens. He became her general factotum and lover, joined the local choir school to complete his education and picked up a fair knowledge of Italian music. On an unauthorized visit to Lyons with the music master, he meanly deserted the latter during an epileptic fit. Eventually supplanted in his mistress's affections by a wigmaker, he made for Paris in 1741 with a new musical notation, which the Academy of Sciences pronounced "neither useful nor original." With secretarial work and musical copying as a livelihood, Rousseau began his association with a maid at his hostelry, Thérèse Le Vasseur, who was neither attractive nor literate and by whom he boasted he had five children. Despite his much vaunted sensibility and regard for the general innocence of children, Rousseau consigned all five children to the foundling hospital.
