He is also known as Le Douanier (the customs officer) after his place of employment. Ridiculed during his life, he came to be recognized as a self-taught genius whose works are of high artistic quality.

He was born in Laval in the Loire Valley into the family of a plumber. He attended Laval High School as a day student and then as a boarder, after his father became a debtor and his parents had to leave the town upon the seizure of their house. He was mediocre in some subjects at the high school but won prizes for drawing and music. He worked for a lawyer and studied law, but "attempted a small perjury and sought refuge in the army," serving for four years, starting in 1863. With his father's death, Rousseau moved to Paris in 1868 to support his widowed mother as a government employee. With his new job in hand, in 1869 he started a relationship with a cabinetmaker's daughter, Cl©mence Boitard, who became his first wife and he wrote a waltz bearing her name. They went on to have nine children but

Rousseau in His Time
"A problem persists with regard to the Douanier Rousseau. Admired by artists at the turn of the century ( Pablo Picasso Robert Delaunay Wassily Kandinsky Constantin Brancusi , and others), and defended by the same writers (led by Guillaume Apollinaire and Blaise Cendrars) who defended them, he is still difficult to fit into what we call modern art. Thus in 1918, after having cited the precursors of Cubism and modern painting, Amedee Ozenfant and C. E. Jeanneret (who was not yet calling himself Le Corbusier) stated: "No need to include among [them] the Douanier Rousseau, one of the most charming painters of the period, for his art was purely traditional."' A similar judgment was handed down by Ribemont Dessaignes, who was active in the Dada movement: "The emergence of Rousseau is an isolated fact separate from the day to day development of art; Rousseau's painting is totally foreign to every contemporary school, whether oldfashioned or avant garde."

Biography:

Henri Rousseau spent his life in the working class a toll collector, a clerk, and a soldier. In 1893, he retired on pension and began painting to occupy his time. Although he was self-taught, his work retained a sophisticated sense of color and unique composition. In the 1880’s, Rousseau began to exhibit his paintings but was never completely taken seriously by his critics and colleagues. After his death, his work influenced the progress of the Surrealist movement.

Family zone Tiger in a Tropical Storm (Surprised!)  1891, The National Gallery, London Henri Rousseau (1844–1910) created some of the most popular and memorable paintings of the modern era. This is the first exhibition of his work to be held in the UK for 80 years. Rousseau is celebrated for his visionary jungle paintings which captivate the viewer with the lushness of their plant and animal life painted with incredible detail and precision. Extraordinarily the artist never saw the tropical scenes he brought so much to life, as he never left France. His exotic jungle paintings are the fantasies of a city dweller, constructed from visits to the zoo and botanical gardens, from postcards, books and from Rousseau’s vivid imagination. These jungles have intrigued people for decades, offering a dream of escape from humdrum reality to a savage and yet enchanting realm. Rousseau’s unique vision was celebrated by his modernist contemporaries like Pablo Picasso and the surrealists Ren© Magritte and Max Ernst, who saw his work as opening up new realms of artistic possibility. They were particularly fascinated by his bold, primitive style and the dream-like nature of his paintings. For a customs official who was self-taught and only took up painting full-time in retirement, this was an extraordinary accomplishment.

Who was Henri Rousseau?
Henri Rousseau lived in Paris, France. He loved art, poetry and music. Rousseau did not train as an artist, but enjoyed copying works of art at the Louvre - the famous Paris art museum. People in Paris loved to explore the great outdoors. Many French artists, including Rousseau, painted scenes of Parisians enjoying themselves. Henri Rousseau liked nothing better than to paint on a Sunday, his only day off. His friend and neighbour, Claude Juniet the greengrocer, loved Sundays too. Sometimes, they would spend time together exploring the countryside around Paris.

Interesting Pablo Picasso saw a painting by Rousseau being sold on the street as a canvas to be painted over. Picasso instantly recognised Henri's genius and so he went to meet him. In 1908 he decided to hold a banquet in Rousseau's honour which was half serious, half burlesque. Some of Picasso's abstract people resemble Rousseau's childish style.
Henri Rousseau is often also called 'Le Douanier'. Next to painting, Rousseau had a job at the Paris Customs Office.

Henri Rousseau (ahn REE roo SOH) was born in northwest France in the city of Laval. He liked to draw, and he enjoyed music. He played the clarinet. Once he wrote a waltz and named it for his wife, but don't confuse him with Jean Jacques Rousseau, the composer.
He served for a time in the French army, and when he was discharged he worked as a toll collector for the city of Paris. His friends called him Le Douanier (luh dwan YAY) which means custom official, but actually he just collected toll money. When he was 49 years old he retired from this job and devoted the rest of his life to painting.
He was a primitive artist; self taught. He would go to the Louvre and copy the paintings. Even when he started making his own paintings he sometimes copied from other artists such as Delacroix's tiger when he painted Scout Attacked by a Tiger
He enjoyed going to the botanical garden in Paris and looking at the plants and the zoo animals. Then he would make a painting with plants in it, but instead of making the plants their actual size, he would make them as big as trees. This made the picture look like a fantasy world. Many people just laughed at his paintings because they looked so unreal. However, some well known artists such as Picasso saw the value in his work. Picasso even gave a banquet in his honor.
Rousseau was married twice. With his first wife Clemence, he had nine children, but she died and so did seven of their children. His second wife also died after they had been married for four years.

Henri Rousseau is also known as "Le Douanier". He was a self-taught artist and is considered one of the most remarkable primitive painters. His bold colours, flat designs, and imaginative subject matter were praised and imitated by modern European painters. Rousseau was born in Laval, the son of a tinsmith. He abandoned his secondary school education and entered military service, during which he met soldiers who had returned from Mexico after the French campaign to support Emperor Maximilian. It was their descriptions of the country that almost certainly inspired the lush, vivid jungle scenes that were to be the subject of much of Rousseau's paintings. After his discharge from the army, he obtained a position with the Paris toll, which explains his sobriquet "Le Douanier" [The Customs Officer]. On his retirement in 1885 he devoted himself to painting.

His nickname refers to the job he held with the Paris Customs Office (1871-93), although he never actually rose to the rank of "Douanier" (Customs Officer). Before this he had served in the army, and he later claimed to have seen service in Mexico, but this story seems to be a product of his imagination. He took up painting as a hobby and accepted early retirement in 1893 so he could devote himself to art. Surprised! (Tropical Storm with a Tiger ) (National Gallery, London, 1891) and the last The Dream (MOMA, New York, 1910). These two paintings are works of great imaginative power, in which he showed his extraordinary ability to retain the utter freshness of his vision even when working on a large scale and with loving attention to detail. He claimed such scenes were inspired by his experiences in Mexico, but in fact his sources were illustrated books and visits to the zoo and botanical gardens in Paris. His other work ranges from the jaunty humor of The Football Players (Philadelphia Museum of Art, 1908) to the mesmeric, eerie beauty of
