I did not go to the Rothko Chapel to pray. Surrounded by black canvas in a hushed room, could I hope for a reflection of myself or of God? I could not safely turn from a painting to contemplate something else, not even something in me. Put away talk of pure plasticity and the sublime's cosmic drama . I had entered a place where I could live for a while with myself. Mark Rothko created that special place, and I entered it again this summer. I do not mean the building I had once visited in Houston. I mean the place one enters again at his retrospective in Washington. As I left this summer's show, I thought back with a shock on what the age of big-time museums takes for granted. I had forgotten how art can darken the world's mirrors to let in a stronger light. Critics have compared that light to the harsh northern sun. They have recalled the grand aspirations of the nineteenth-century sublime. Perhaps, but Rothko offers something more down to earth. A Romantic mirror of the eternal seems far away. These paintings hold out a darker, far more palpable kind of mirror, the clouded glass of everyday perception.

    1. To us art is an adventure into an unknown world, which can be explored only by those willing to take the risks.
    2. This world of imagination is fancy-free and violently opposed to common sense.
    3. It is our function as artists to make the spectator see the world our way not his way.
    4. We favor the simple expression of the complex thought. We are for the large shape because it has the impact of the unequivocal. We wish to reassert the picture plane. We are for flat forms because they destroy illusion and reveal truth.
    5. It is a widely accepted notion among painters that it does not matter what one paints as long as it is well painted. This is the essence of academicism.
There is no such thing as a good painting about nothing.
We assert that the subject is crucial and only that subject matter is valid which is tragic and timeless. That is why we profess spiritual kinship with primitive and archaic art.

A glance at the pages, with their cross outs, handwritten additions and dyspeptic typing, gives a sense of my hesitation. Despite this minefield, I found myself strangely drawn in. There was something seductive about those yellowed, crumbling pages. Something, like an old treasure map, that whispered of unrepeatable history and untold secrets. And casting better judgment to the wind, I stopped protesting and jumped in. Most people know Rothko as the artist who made paintings such as Untitled , written circa 1940, not only applies to the early and late work alike, it goes further, seeming to call for the pure abstraction that will follow in several years: ...in the significant paintings of today, the subject matter is constituted either of ideological abstraction or appearances abstracted into the world of ideals by being frankly employed as a foil or vehicle for demonstration of these ideals.

Many critics have hailed Rothko's work as transcendental, creating spiritual work for secular times. Rothko canvases of the 1950s and 1960s engender a sense of sublimity through their size, space, and light. Painted with thin layers of paint that allow the color beneath to show, the saturated canvases seem to radiate from an inner light source. Rothko's floating rectangles vacillate between figure and ground, focused and hazy, creating a tension within in the composition and perhaps within the viewer. Like Rothko, Klein used color to create a sense of infinite space. However, Klein refused to paint with multiple colors because he did not want to create tension within the composition. Dissatisfied with the lackluster quality of available materials, Klein created International Klein Blue, a deep ultramarine pigment suspended in synthetic resin. This color is often associated with the sea and sky, which are usually perceived as limitless to the human eye. Klein, interested in the viewer's emotional response to his Monochrome Adventure, hoped viewers would be able to experience the Void through a uniformly painted color field.

Mark Rothko Untitled
oil on canvas, 31-3/4 x 23-5/8 inches
Collection of Christopher Rothko
Courtesy PaceWildestein, New York A good Rothko is always an enigma: You can sense its beauty and feel its emotion, yet both are ineffable. It is very hard to believe, for instance, that if a given lozenge were a few inches taller or shorter, it would make a blind bit of difference. Yet the beauty seems intricately calibrated. And as with the formal, so with the emotional component. We can feel "emotion" without being able to quantify it, without really being able to say whether a given Rothko is cheerful or melancholy, tragic or ecstatic. To a considerable extent, appreciation of Rothko is conditioned by Rothko's myth. The artist, steeped in Nietszche and Greek tragedy, who pondered the Holocaust and ended up taking his own life, has us expecting, and finding, gravitas and catharsis in his work. But, in the Nietzschean sense, Rothko's emotionality is "beyond" happy and sad. Emotion, like form, is abstracted from the particular and taken to a transcendent place.

The Spirit of Myth

Early Paintings from the 1930's and 1940's
In the Collection of the National Gallery
7 September through 13 October 1996
Prominent for his contribution to American innovations in abstract art after World War II, Mark Rothko was one of the spearheads of the group of young artists known as "the New York School." Also called "Abstract Expressionists," they included Jackson Pollock, Adolph Gottlieb, Herbert Ferber, William de Kooning, Robert Motherwell, Barnett Newman, and more than a dozen others who met regularly to exchange new ideas toward the development of abstract art. Theirs was more a movement than a style of painting and sculpture, focusing on ideas surrounding a new way of defining art. Motivated by the European surrealists who had emigrated to New York in the wake of political oppression in Nazi Germany in the late 1930's, the younger artists established a powerful wave of influence that literally "captured" the artworld away from its former center in Paris. As a result, America had established international importance in avante-garde art.
