Rothko
Biography Full Name: Mark Rothko (born Marcus Rothkowitz) Born: Died: Born in Dvinsk, Russia (now Daugavpils, Latvia) Rothko moved with his family to Portland, Oregon in 1913. His painting education was brief - he moved to New York to study under the artist Max Weber and then struck out on his own. Rothko is known for his abstract expressionism paintings, but he moved through more traditional styles in his early career, including Surrealist paintings in the 1940s. In 1947 he embarked on the first of his large abstract 'colour-field' paintings, formalising their structure further in the 1950s. Rothko had huge success with largescale solo shows, but committed suicide in 1970.
Simon Schama on Rothko
"One morning in the spring of 1970, I went into the Tate Gallery and took a wrong, right turn and there they were, lying in wait. No it wasn't love at first site. Rothko had insisted that the lighting be kept almost pretentiously low. It was like going into the cinema, expectation in the dimness. Something in there was throbbing steadily, pulsing like the inside of a body part, all crimson and purple. I felt I was being pulled through those black lines to some mysterious place in the universe.

Orange County Museum of Art, Newport Beach , Orange County) This exhibition is small compared to the scope of Mark Rothko's work, but it contains many treasures. It traces his visual evolution from traditional, socially realistic oil paintings on canvas, to the abstract multiforms, also referred to as stacked rectangles. In the forty-some years he created, his painting took several paths. Yet it always had one commonality: Rothko sought to excavate, no matter what period we consider, the visually pure and absolute as he sought to describe some hidden aspect of modern life. Hence his quest, at the threshold of developing his signature imagery, to convey the spirit of human mythology. Two aspects of the show are particularly fascinatinghis earliest works, and the transformation of how he arrived at his now famous rectangles. In the '30s, Rothko focused on the city as a living being. He portrayed its vastness and isolating effects on those within it. Subway Scene conveys a claustrophobic crunch as frozen vertical characters are positioned in architectural settings. Early attraction to a vertical and horizontal spatial placement of form is evident.

–Mark Rothko At a bookstore the other day, I picked up a book on painter Mark Rothko . It featured dozens of his paintings presented in chronological order, one per page. Flipping through the pages turned into an experience similar to viewing a flipbook movie. The movie was the story of his art over his life. And you could see a definite progression. His art kept getting simpler and simpler. There was an evolution. He was building up to nothing. The longer he painted, the more he reduced his work to the bare essentials.

simplicity
He chose at this juncture to simplify his art in order to figure out his life, erasing the boundaries between the two. As he explained it, he started trying “to shave off all imagery, pretensions of poetry, illusions of grandeur….Just say what it is, simple English, make it rhyme and put a backbeat on it, and express yourself as simply [and] straightforwardly as possible.” Related

Hopefully complexity starts becoming trendy again and then there can be posts talking about how much more popular and relevant Pollock is compared to Rothko.
