Mark Rothko was born in Daugavpils Latvia (then part of the Russian Empire ). His father Jacob was a pharmacist and an intellectual, who provided his children with a secular and political, rather than religious upbringing. However, following the Russian pogrom against Jews, incited by the 1905 revolution , Jacob repented and became a Baal teshuva . Unlike Jews in most cities of Czarist Russia , those in Daugavpils were spared a violent outbreak of reprisal. In an environment where Jews were often blamed for many of the evils that befell Russia, Rothko’s early childhood was plagued with fear, as he witnessed the occasional violence brought down upon Jews by Cossacks attempting to stifle revolutionary uprisings. An image that remained with him throughout his adult life was that of open pits, where Cossacks buried Jews they kidnapped and murdered. Some critics interpret Rothko’s later use of rectangular forms as a formal representation of these graves. However, Rothko’s memory may be disputed, as no mass executions were said to have been committed in or near

Mark Rothko is noted for being only second to Jackson Pollock as the great abstract expressionist of the 1950s. Rothko was born in Russia in 1903. His family immigrated to the United States in 1913. At Yale University he was a liberal arts major. At the Art Students League in New York, Rothko studied various areas of art. In the 1930s, Rothko became a painter in the abstract expressionist group. He married his second wife in 1945 and had two children. Rothko committed suicide in 1970. Rothko's paintings are known for their spiritual quality which parallels the holy ideals of the beat writers of the 1950s. Allen Ginsberg, Lawrence Ferlinghetti, Gary Snyder, and Jack Kerouac are beat writers whose poetry and prose contains elements of holiness. The abstraction in Rothko's paintings is like the imagery that the beat writers produced in their work. Rothko's abstractness is described as "express[ing] the human tensions which persist through time in present terms" (Cavaliere 1002). The beat writers were expressing tensions they were facing in their contemporary 1950s culture such as fear of the cold war and being seen as delinquents from a mainstream society. -Amy Nichols (Cerrito, Joahn.

In the 1940's Rothko work became influenced by surelism, but went into the nonobjective style that he is best known for. This style is known as the color-field branch of abstract expressionism. This style of painting is when an artist takes large, hazily defined rectangles of color and paints them on the canvas. He used anywhere from bright happy colors to dark murky colors to convey his emotions and a sense of spirituality. Red, Orange, Tan and Purple One of his most important late works is the Rotko Chapel. In this chapel, in Houston, Texas, he painted somber, contemplative murals. "I'm not an abstract artist, I'm not interested in the relationship of colour or form or anything else. I'm interested only in expressing basic human emotions - tragedy, ecstasy, doom and so on." Mark Rothko. Mark Rothkowitz was born in Dvivsk, Russia. His early childhood was marked by terror campaigns against the Jews forcing his mother to emigrate with her children to the United States in 1913. Rothko turned out to be a gifted academic entering Yale University in 1921 and a man with strong radical tendencies, maintaining that he was an anarchist his whole life. Dropping out in the second year he headed to New York to study with Max Weber. His early paintings were oriented to social themes and contain expressionist as well as surrealist overtones. In 1935 Rothko and Adolph Gottlieb founded 'The Ten', a group of artists that favoured expressionist styles over the more abstract techniques of the Americans. The Ten sought to communicate human emotion and human drama through their paintings.

Mark Rothko
Mark Rothko was a painter, often classified as an abstract expressionist (although Rothko vociferously denied being an abstract painter). He was born Mark Rothkowitz in Daugavpils (Dvinsk), Russia (now Latvia) and emigrated to the United States in 1916. His work concentrated on basic emotions, often filling the canvas with very few intense colours, with little immediately-apparent detail. In this respect, he can also be considered to presage the color field painters (see: Helen Frankenthaler). Although respected by other artists, Rothko remained in relative obscurity until 1960, supporting himself by teaching art. In 1958, Rothko was commissioned by Philip Johnson to paint a series of murals for the Four Seasons restaurant in the Seagram Building in New York, a project he worked on for most of a year. Ultimately, Rothko was not happy having his paintings as the backdrop to gourmet dining, so he gave a set of nine of the maroon and black paintings to the Tate Gallery where they are on permanent display in an installation designed by Rothko. After a long struggle with depression, Rothko committed suicide by cutting his wrists in his New York studio on February 25, 1970. Following his death, the settlement of the Rothko estate became the subject of a famous court case.
