Rodin, Auguste key Barye , earning his living by working for an ornament maker. In 1863 he went to work for the architectural sculptor A. E. Carrier-Belleuse, who had a great influence on him. From 1870 to 1875 he continued in the same trade in Brussels and then briefly visited Italy. In the Salon of 1877 he exhibited a nude male figure, The Age of Bronze (1876; Paris). It was both extravagantly praised and condemned; his critics unjustly accused him of having made a cast from life. From the furor Rodin gained the active support and patronage of Turquet, undersecretary of fine arts. His

He is regarded as the foremost sculptor of the 19th and early 20th centuries. Fran§ois Auguste Ren© Rodin was born in Paris on November 12, 1840, the son of a police official. He studied art in a free school for artisans and on his own at the Louvre, because he was refused admittance to the ‰cole des Beaux-Arts. For many years he worked for other sculptors, including Ernest Carrier-Belleuse. Rodin collaborated in the early 1870s with a Belgian artist on architectural sculpture for the Bourse in Brussels. In 1875 he traveled to Italy, where he was profoundly influenced by the treatment of movement and muscular action in the works of the Renaissance sculptors Donatello and Michelangelo. For Rodin, beauty in art consisted in the truthful representation of inner states, and to this end he often subtly distorted anatomy. His sculpture, in bronze and marble, falls generally into two styles. The more characteristic style reveals a deliberate roughness of form and a painstaking surface modeling; the other is marked by a polished surface and delicacy of form. Rodin produced several important sculptures between about 1858 and 1875, including notably the

Auguste Rodin
Auguste Rodin Biography
Auguste Rodin (born Fran§ois-Auguste-Ren© Rodin; November 12, 1840–November 17, 1917) was a French artist, most famous as a sculptor. Auguste Rodin was the preeminent French sculptor of his time, and remains one of the few sculptors widely recognized outside the visual arts community. Although Rodin is generally considered the progenitor of modern sculpture, Auguste Rodin did not set out to rebel against the past. Auguste Rodin was schooled traditionally in Paris's ‰cole des Beaux-Arts system, took a craftsman-like approach to his work, and desired academic recognition. Sculpturally, Auguste Rodin possessed a unique ability to model a complex, turbulent, deeply pocketed surface in clay.

Auguste Rodin (1840-1917) is perhaps best remembered for his monumental bronze sculpture but during the last two decades of his life, he created many lyrical drawings and watercolors. They offered a spontaneity and freedom not seen in his earlier work, which led critics to dub them instantan©s For Americans, their first chance to see these drawings was January 1908, when Edward Steichen arranged an exhibit at his New York gallery Self Portrait (Boston, 1963): 18]. Neoclassical While in Brussels, Rodin also modeled a number of decorative female figures and busts of young women, some in peasant dress and others wearing flowers or fruit in their hair, to which he began to sign his own name. The bust of a young woman wreathed in grapes ( ) belongs to this period, during which his work in the medium of terracotta was still very strongly influenced by the kind of modeling he had done in the studio of Carrier-Belleuse.

Auguste Rodin, The Kiss, 1901-4 Pentelic marble, executed by Ganier, Rigaud and Mathet. 182.2 x 121.9 x 153 cm. French sculptor Auguste Rodin (1840–1917) heralded the modern age. His achievement is celebrated in this major retrospective. Ten chronological themes explore Rodin’s inspiration, from his studies of unposed models to his love of antiquities. The exhibition is organised like a journey. It begins with Rodin’s early contacts and first recognition, introduces his special relationship with Britain, and explores how the support of a few artists, writers, business men, politicians and aristocrats led to recognition by an international public. The Gates of Hell and a large version of The Thinker feature amongst 300 pieces of the highest quality, borrowed mainly from the Mus©e Rodin and the sculptor’s home in Meudon, France. Rodin’s lyrical, erotic drawings and tiny clay sketches are shown alongside period photographs of his work and many large plasters which have never before been exhibited outside France. The story of Rodin and Britain – the sub-theme of this exhibition – begins with Rodin’s first visit to London in the summer of 1881, shortly after he had received the commission for
