Committee Rodin Museum Benjamin Franklin Parkway at 22nd Street Auguste Rodin (French, 1840–1917) brought monumental public sculpture into the modern era. Though he was well acquainted with the academic traditions and idealized subjects of classical and Renaissance sculpture, Rodin's aim in his work was to be absolutely faithful to nature. His uncanny ability to convey movement and to show the inner feelings of the men and women he portrayed, the bravura of his light-catching modeling, and his extraordinary use of similar figures in different mediums, have established him as one of the greatest sculptors of all time. The Rodin Museum was the gift of movie theater magnate Jules Mastbaum (American, 1872–1926) to the city of Philadelphia. Mastbaum began collecting works by Rodin in 1923 with the intent of founding a museum to enrich the lives of his fellow citizens. Just three years later, he had assembled the largest collection of Rodin's works outside Paris, including bronze castings, plaster studies, drawings, prints, letters, and books. In 1926, Mastbaum commissioned French architects Paul Cret and Jacques Gr©ber to design the Museum building and gardens. Unfortunately, the collector did not live to see his dream realized, but his widow honored his commitment to the city, and the Museum was inaugurated on November 29, 1929.

Childhood 1840-1858
Early Struggles 1858-1870
To help support his family Rodin began working commercially in the decorative arts in 1858. Paris was in a time of transformation, many statues and other ornamental sculptures were being erected throughout the city in courtyards, squares and in front of public buildings. Numerous workshops throughout Paris were hiring artists to work on these public projects. Rodin endured several years of laboring for others by day and trying to fulfill his personal artistic aspirations by night. Grief stricken by the unexpected death of his sister in 1862, Rodin briefly joined a Catholic order. Father Eymard, founder of the Order of the Holy Sacrament, quickly detected that the monastic life was not Rodin's true calling. He encouraged Rodin to draw and sculpt in order to revive him from his saddened mental state. Father Eymard was successful and Rodin left the monastery to pursue his dreams of being a sculptor. Continuing to support himself by working for decorative sculptors, Rodin was able to afford to rent his first studio: a small, cold, and drafty stable. In the fall of 1863, he began working on a portrait bust that he intended to submit as his debut sculpture to the Paris Salon. The Salon was the official exhibition held annually where artists could display their work to the public. The atmosphere was very competitive, as each artist sought buyers for their work. The official prizes awarded greatly influenced what was sold. The Salon could make or break an artist's reputation.

Rodin, Auguste (1840-1917). The French artist Auguste Rodin had a profound influence on 20th-century sculpture. His works are distinguished by their stunning strength and realism. Rodin refused to ignore the negative aspects of humanity, and his works confront distress and moral weakness as well as passion and beauty. Francois-Auguste-Rene Rodin was born on Nov. 12, 1840, in Paris. At the age of 14 he entered the Petite Ecole, a school of decorative arts in Paris. He applied three times to study at the renowned Ecole des Beaux-Arts but was rejected each time. In 1858 he began to do decorative stonework in order to make his living. Four years later the death of his sister Marie so traumatized Rodin that he entered a sacred order. The father superior of the order recognized Rodin's talents and encouraged him to pursue his art. In 1864 Rodin met a seamstress named Rose Beuret. She became his life companion and was the model for many of his works. That year Rodin submitted his Man with a Broken Nose to the Paris Salon. It was rejected but later accepted under the title

In fact, using the finest craftsman and techniques developed by Rodin’s fondeurs, bronze casts were created with the utmost attention to the details, size, and patinas which exist in casts supervised by the artist during his lifetime. With this purpose in mind, lifetime casts were examined, and the only plasters selected were those which maintained the details and quality of Rodin’s best works. http://www.icctrade.tk/

I have long admired the many art works created in the studios of Auguste Rodin.
(Portrait of Rodin created by Paolo Troubetskoy). As a teenager I started to read a biographical novel about Rodin mainly because of the sexy title Naked Came I . Though, as I read more, I became intrigued with the artist's passion and Bohemian lifestyle. When I made it to Paris a couple years later, I stopped at the Rodin museum. Since then, I have visited his works of art whenever possible.
This page and its photos are my personal creation. I have read both Frederic V. Grunfeld's Rodin: A Biography and the definitive biography Rodin: The Shape of Genius by Ruth Butler.
I highly recommend the books, such as Rodin on Art and Artists , that are based on Rodin's own words. I still appreciate Rodin's great talent, but I have also realized that he had many rivals with great artistic genius. French Impressionism was invented in a period when men with feet of clay were able to rise above political turmoil using amazing creative energy and imagination. I have visited the Rodin museums in Paris and Philadelphia. Rodin's masterwork is generally considered to be the

Auguste Rodin Sculpture
The sculpture of Auguste Rodin is generally considered to be the most important contribution to the world of sculpture in the 19th century. Rodin's innovations in expressive techniques paved the way for a change from the extreme realism of the day and also from the long domination of Greek influence. Although his works are very unique, Rodin derived inspiration from many sources including Gothic art, the dance, and the works of Dante, Donatello, and Michelangelo.

I n the last years of his life, Auguste Rodin (1840-1917) was hailed as a magician and miracle worker, poet and philosopher, sublime genius, and master sculptor. By 1900, Rodin was already considered to be France's greatest living artist. No other modern artist has been so controversial, yet had such extravagant epithets and honors, nor (with the exception of Picasso) has had such international impact. In giving form to the suffering, malaise, and ennui of the late 19th century, as well as celebrating the human form, Rodin effectively liberated sculpture from the didactic, moralizing monuments of the past. To understand Rodin's accomplishments, it is necessary to place his career into the context of the Paris Sculpture Salon and the Ecole des Beaux-Arts, whose high-minded academic standards had dominated French art and patronage since the 17th century. With the hierarchy of artistic authority stemming from these government institutions, breaking from tradition was both daring and extremely risky for artists hoping to succeed in France. Rodin challenged the established styles and, in so doing, revolutionized sculpture. After graduating in 1857, Rodin began working as a decorative sculptor. Throughout much of the 1860s and 1870s, he assisted in the workshop of France's premier decorative sculptor Albert-Ernest Carrier-Belleuse (1824-1887). Following the Franco-Prussian War of 1870-71, Rodin moved to Brussels, where he worked continuously for more than five years. In 1875 Rodin went to Italy to study the sculpture of Michelangelo. The trip provided the encouragement that Rodin needed to reject the prevailing dogma of academic sculpture, and propelled him into the next phase of his career.

Short Biography of Auguste Rodin
Born to a police inspector in Paris, Rodin knew by the age of ten that he wanted to be an artist. He attended the School of Decorative Arts in Paris and studied literature and history simultaneously. He began a freelance practice of decorative and ornamental work. Upon the death of his sister, he decided to join a Christian group, but moved on to pursue his life in art, studying under Antoine Louis Barye. Age of Bronze . The piece caused uproar and was filled with controversy. It looked too real for anyone to believe. The piece was later purchased by the state. While working in bronze, he also began working in ceramics, where he released a number of sketches and engravings to the public. At this time, his fame was growing so much that the French government decided to commission him to design the doorway to the Museum of Decorative Arts, called the

Back to Expressionism (François) Auguste René Rodin was a French sculptor, who imbued his work with great psychological force, which was expressed largely through texture and modeling. He is regarded as the foremost sculptor of the 19th and early 20th centuries. Rodin was born in Paris on November 12, 1840, the son of a police official. He studied art in a free school for artisans and on his own at the Louvre, because he was refused admittance to the École des Beaux-Arts. For many years he worked for other sculptors, including Ernest Carrier-Belleuse, at the same time carrying out studies in anatomy.
  • France 1937. Auguste Rodin, and in the background his sculpture "The Thinker", modelled 1880.
For Rodin, beauty in art consisted in the truthful representation of inner states, and to this end he often subtly distorted anatomy. His sculptures, in bronze and marble, falls generally into two styles. The more characteristic style reveals a deliberate roughness of form and a painstaking surface modeling; the other is marked by a polished surface and delicacy of form.

Click here to read our biography on August Rodin August Rodin, French - (1840-1917) Rodin has been appreciated for decades as one of the pre-eminent Realist sculptors of the late nineteenth- and early twentieth-century. Rodin's goal, as he put it, was "to render inner feelings through muscular movement." He achieved this aim by joining his profound knowledge of anatomy and movement with special attention to the body's surfaces, saying, "The sculptor must learn to reproduce the surface, which means all that vibrates on the surface, soul, love, passion, life...Sculpture is thus the art of hollows and mounds, not of smoothness, or even polished planes." To this end, his detailed modeling and energetic poses are strikingly vigorous and lifelike...even one hundred years after they were created
