Jump to: navigation search Auguste Rodin. Auguste Rodin (born Fran§ois-Auguste-Ren© Rodin; November 12 November 17 ) was a French artist, most famous as a sculptor . He was the preeminent French sculptor of his time, and remains one of the few sculptors widely recognized outside the visual arts community. Although Rodin is generally considered the progenitor of modern sculpture, he did not set out to rebel against the past. He was schooled traditionally in Paris's ‰cole des Beaux-Arts system, took a craftsman-like approach to his work, and desired academic recognition. Sculpturally, he possessed a unique ability to model a complex, turbulent, deeply pocketed surface in clay Many of Rodin's most notable sculptures were roundly criticized during his lifetime. They clashed with the predominant figure sculpture tradition, in which works were decorative, formulaic, or highly thematic. Rodin's most original work departed from traditional themes of mythology and allegory , modeled the human body with realism, and celebrated individual character and physicality. Rodin was sensitive to the controversy about his work, but did not change his style, and successive works brought increasing favor from the government and the artistic community.

From LoveToKnow 1911
AUGUSTE RODIN (1840-), French sculptor, was born in 1840, in Paris , and at an early age displayed a taste for his art. He began by attending Barye's classes, but did not yield too completely to his influence. From 1864 to 1870, under pressure of necessity, he was employed in the studio of CarrierBelleuse, where he learnt to deal with the mechanical difficulties of a sculptor. Even so early as 1864 his individuality was manifested in his "Man with a Broken Nose ." After the war, finding nothing to do in Paris, Rodin went to Brussels , where from 1871 to 1877 he worked, as the colleague of the Belgian artist Van Rasbourg, on the sculpture for the outside and the caryatides for the interior of the Bourse , besides exhibiting in 1875 a "Portrait of Garnier." In 1877 he contributed to the Salon "The Bronze Age ," which was seen again, cast in bronze , at the Salon of 1880, when it took a third-class medal , was purchased by the State, and is now in the museum of the Luxembourg. Between 1882 and 1885 he sent to the Salons busts of "Jean-Paul Laurens" and " Carrier -Belleuse" (1882), "

Auguste Rodin is well-known as the most important sculptor of the nineteenth century. Throughout his career... he produced not only sculptures but also book illustrations, etchings and drawings of nudes, mostly women. It was especially in the last decades of his life that he began to do erotic drawings of his female models. At the time, this kind of experimental work was considered obscene and indecent. Using pencil and watercolour, Rodin produced pictures of great expressive power, with skilful strokes and erotic evocations. The exhibition contains a selection of seventy works belonging to the Mus©e Rodin in Paris. Source: artmagick.com In the last years of Source: plazagallery.com The French artist Auguste Rodin had a profound influence on 20th-century sculpture. Born Fran§ois-Auguste-Ren© Rodin to a working class family in Paris, he is often given a pivotal role in the history of modern sculpture, as both excelling at and rebelling from the Beaux-arts tradition. His unique, virtuoso ability to organize a complex, turbulent, deeply pocketed surface set him apart from the figure sculpture traditions before and since his time. Despite the talent evident in his portrait of the local priest who helped him discover his vocation, Rodin was denied admission to the Beaux Arts academy. He was accepted... at a trade school for decorative sculpture, and later moved to Belgium to work in a studio that produced that kind of work. One of his early works, The Age of Bronze, created during his years in Belgium, looked so realistic that he was accused of surmoulage (taking plaster moulds from the live model).

He was generally out of sink with the prevailing trends of his time (neo-classical revivals, celebratory and monumental). He often travelled to London to meet the Pre-Raphaelites and greatly appreciated the art of William Blake. Like him, he brought Dante's genius to the attention of Romantic sensibilities. What he thought of The kiss "The embrace of The Kiss is undoubtedly very attractive", he acknowledged. "But I have found nothing in this group. It is a theme frequently treated in the academic tradition, a subject complete in itself and artificially isolated from the world surrounding it; it is a big ornament sculpted according to the usual formula and which focuses attention on the two personages instead of opening up wide horizons to daydreams." What he thought of The thinker ‘The Thinker has a story. In the days long gone by I conceived the idea of the Gates of Hell. Before the door, seated on the rock, Dante thinking of the plan of the poem behind him... all the characters from the Divine Comedy . This project was not realized. Thin ascetic Dante in his straight robe separated from all the rest would have been without meaning. Guided by my first inspiration I conceived another thinker, a naked man, seated on a rock, his fist against his teeth, he dreams. The fertile thought slowly elaborates itself within his brain. He is no longer a dreamer, he is a creator.'

RODIN Auguste Auguste Rodin (1840-1917) August Rodin was born on November twelfth, 1840 in Paris. Now regarded as one of the greatest and most influential and prolific sculptors of his time, Rodin turned away from Neo-Classicism and revolutionized three-dimensional art by emphasizing fragmentation, rejecting idealism, and reflecting his subjects as they truly appeared. Rodin showed great interest in art at an early age and attended La Petite Ecole, a school for drawing and mathematics at the age of fourteen. From 1854 to 1857, he studied at the Ecole des Arts Decoratifs in Paris, but in 1862 was so devastated by his sister's death that he joined the Order of the Holy Sacrament. During his one year studying religion, Rodin sculpted a bust of Father Piere-Julien Eynard, and realized through this experience that his true calling was sculpture. In 1963, he returned to Paris. While traveling to Belgium and Italy, Rodin came into contact with the work of Michelangelo, whose depictions of the musculature of the human body affected him greatly. Rodin had been trained in the strict academic style of the masters, yet he saw in Michelangelo something different, a freedom from the constraints of tradition. After returning to Paris, Rodin began to reflect his subjects as they truly appeared. In 1877 he exhibited L'Age d'Airin in Brussels and Paris. This sculpture, which was extremely realistic and unconventional, was initially rejected by the public; Rodin was accused of casting directly from his models. Eventually, however, Rodin won the support of France and L'Age d'Airin was purchased by the government.

Rodin, Auguste
Rodin, Auguste (1840-1917). The French artist Auguste Rodin had a profound influence on 20th-century sculpture. His works are distinguished by their stunning strength and realism. Rodin refused to ignore the negative aspects of humanity, and his works confront distress and moral weakness as well as passion and beauty. Francois-Auguste-Rene Rodin was born on Nov. 12, 1840, in Paris. At the age of 14 he entered the Petite Ecole, a school of decorative arts in Paris. He applied three times to study at the renowned Ecole des Beaux-Arts but was rejected each time. In 1858 he began to do decorative stonework in order to make his living. Four years later the death of his sister Marie so traumatized Rodin that he entered a sacred order. The father superior of the order recognized Rodin's talents and encouraged him to pursue his art. In 1864 Rodin met a seamstress named Rose Beuret. She became his life companion and was the model for many of his works. That year Rodin submitted his Man with a Broken Nose to the Paris Salon. It was rejected but later accepted under the title

"It is true that Rodin's art makes overt reference to its own artificiality. When we say that his kind of realism was not seamless, we mean it: his sculptures often exposed the joint lines of the piece molds in which they were cast, as well as the "unfinished" marks of modeling and editing. Fragmentation and repetition functioned in the same way, as instances of the sculptor's processes made evident in his product. Rodin typically made "spare parts" - feet, hands, knees, and so on - and put together his figures from these. And once he made a figure, he would often remake it, by recasting multiple versions and variants. By showing these processes in the partial figures and modular recurrences of his exhibited work, he undercut his own virtuosity as a conjurer of stories in flesh and bone, and introduced an evident self-consciousness about the artificiality of art's means. "Broken parts and replicas were a daily part of a sculptor's working apparatus: every studio in Paris was littered with them. But where others would have completed a work in progress, Rodin said "enough": and where others would have considered a figure made, he made it again - not because he thought these steps would cancel meaning in his work, but because he was willing to see how such decisions might alter the range of meanings he could convey. The truly creative act was to see how such forms could function within - not just independently of, or in antagonism to - his attempts to accord new meaning to the themes he dealt with.
