by Lucy Pearce. When thinking of Mexican art of the twentieth century the monumental mural cycles of Los Tres Grandes immediately spring to mind. The movement, which came into being with the 1921 commission for the National Preparatory School in Mexico City, produced some of the most compelling and dynamic images of this century in the Americas. Jose Clemente Orozco (1883-1949), David Alfaro Siqueiros (1898-1974), and Diego Rivera (1886-1957), the main protagonists, continually stressed the importance of mural painting within their oeuvre. In many cases this was for didactic purposes. Indeed, Siqueiros wrote, "We repudiate all easel painting and every kind of art favoured by ultra-intellectual circles, because it is aristocratic, and we praise monumental art in all its forms because it is public property." However, throughout their careers these artists maintained a constant stream of easel paintings. Not only was this due to economic necessity but easel painting was also used as a means of working out ideas for compositions and as an experimental forum for techniques and materials to be later used on large scale mural projects. This was particularly true for both Siqueiros and Rivera; Orozco's methods and materials always tended to be more traditional. Rivera and Siqueiros both had a conservative training at the Academy of San Carlos in Mexico City. They expanded their knowledge and experience of the latest trends in modern art through extensive travel and study abroad. Rivera was in Europe from 1907 to 1921. Most of his time was spent in Paris where he absorbed the ideas of the Cubist milieu.

The exhibition will be an extensive presentation of the art and life of this colourful artist, including drawings, oils, water colours, gouaches and pastels, and a wide collection of Rivera's correspondence, sketch books, newspaper clippings and other documentary material. In addition, there will be some 50 photographs of Diego Rivera and his wife Frida Kahlo, some of which were taken by renowned photographers such as Manuel Alvarez Bravo. There will also be large and impressive photographic reproductions of Rivera's murals in Mexico and the United States. Diego Rivera was fond of telling stories and some of them have become legends about his own life. However, it is known that in his youth Rivera was a member of the circle of artists in Montparnasse in Paris, together with Picasso and others. After his return to Mexico in the early 1920s, Rivera, in collaboration with other young artists, sought to build a new Mexican identity and society through their art. Rivera is famous for his monumental murals whose motifs range from Mexico's history to its daily life. These murals combine European modernism with Mexico's folk traditions and the myths of its indigenous peoples. Diego Rivera is one of Mexico's national artists. The works in the exhibition are on loan from museums and private collections in Mexico, the United States and Europe. The Rivera exhibition forms a part of the Helsinki City Art Museum's series of shows on Mexican art. In 1997, the Museum presented an exhibition of the works of Frida Kahlo, Rivera's wife, which was attended by a record crowd of 103,000 visitors.

Diego Rivera (1886-1957) 20th Century Mexican Artist Diego Rivera was arguably one of the greatest Mexican painters of the 20th Century, and certainly the most well known. He is credited in modern times for reviving the art of painting frescos in Latin America and the United States, and was a leader in the Mexican mural movement.
Diego Rivera Jose Diego Rivera Barrientos was born in Guanajuato on 8th December 1886. He had a twin brother, Jose Carlos, who died at eighteen months old, and a younger sister. When he was six, the family moved to Mexico City. Showing an early talent, Rivera received a scholarship to attend the San Carlos Academy of Fine Arts but, after student riots, he was expelled. He was then granted a travel scholarship to study in Europe. He arrived in Spain in 1907, and then went to France. After arriving in France he met Angeline Beloff, who gave birth to his only son, Diego, in 1916.
    A famous painting
by Diego Rivera He participated in exhibitions for the Societe des Artistes Independants between 1910 and 1912, and in 1914 held his only solo exhibition in France. In 1919 his daughter Marika was born to Marevna Vorobieva, although he was still with Angeline. In 1920 he travelled to Italy to study renaissance art, and specifically frescos. The next year he finished with Angeline and went home to Mexico.

The photo was taken at Cathay House, 718 California, at Grant Ave., probably in January or early February 1941. Diego Rivera (1886-1957) came to San Francisco for the 1940 Golden Gate International Exposition at Treasure Island. His Pan American Unity murals commissioned for the World's Fair are now at the San Francisco City College. Frida Kahlo (1907-1954) , Rivera's third wife, had divorced him, but she came to San Francisco in December 1940, reconciled with the great muralist, and they remarried December 8, 1940. Cathay House manager John J. Kan, later known simply as "Johnny Kan," founded the famed Kan's Restaurant, at 708 Grant Avenue in Chinatown. Both Cathay House and Kan's were still in business in 2000. The precise relationship of Dr. Layman of Stanford, and Miss Wolff, to Rivera or Kahlo, is not known.

    Introduction
This supplemental unit to Diego was developed as part of the Schools of California Online Resources for Educators (SCORE) Project , funded by the California Technology Assistance Program (CTAP). The links here have been scrutinized for their grade and age appropriateness; however, contents of links on the World Wide Web change continuously. It is advisable that teachers review all links before introducing CyberGuides to students. This supplemental unit provides resources for students of Social Science and/or Spanish to develop an overview of the Mexican Revolution, understand and demonstrate the use of symbology in the mural paintings of Diego Rivera, and communicate the cultural significance of healers in the Mexican culture. During these activities, students will research and discuss a time line of major events, create and present a dialog between a soldier and a farmer regarding expectations for change at the conclusion of the war, select and describe the social and historical significance of a mural of Diego Rivera, develop a menu of symbols to create a mural that depicts an event or period of time in a student's life, view and interpret others' murals, write a letter to a healer convincing her/him to attend to a sick friend or relative, and respond as a healer to a written request for services. In their study of the life and mural paintings of Diego Rivera, students will increase their knowledge and understanding of Mexican history and culture as they focus on the following questions:
