Pierre Auguste Renoir, a French impressionist painter, was noted for his radiant, intimate paintings, particularly of the female nude. Recognized by critics as one of the greatest and most independent painters of his period, Renoir is noted for the harmony of his lines, the brilliance of his color, and the intimate charm of his wide variety of subjects. Unlike other impressionists he was as much interested in painting the single human figure or family group portraits as he was in landscapes; unlike them, too, he did not subordinate composition and plasticity of form to attempts at rendering the effect of light.
At the age of 13 Renoir began painting flowers on dishware at a porcelain factory and later painted fans and screens. In 1862 he entered the studio of Charles Gleyre (1808-74) and became friends with Claude Monet and Alfred Sisley, who shared his inclination to take up painting outdoors. By the time (1869) that he and Monet worked together at La Grenouillere, on the Seine, Renoir had developed a delicate touch and vibrant brushwork that were distinctly his own.

RENOIR, Pierre Auguste (1841-1919). Impressionist Painter.
    "THE MIS-USE OF VARNISH"
Autograph Letter Signed ("Renoir") to the art-collector Arsene Alexandre, criticising the tendency to over-varnish paintings.
Half page 8vo in French on squared paper with integral blank leaf, [Paris], 30 May 1894.
Trans: "The industrial and disagreeable look which the mis-use of varnish gives to paintings is extremely regrettable and if your article could put a stop to this new rush to 'do up like new' (remis a neuf) I myself could only congratulate you. Your affectionate Renoir."
Renoir was probably thinking both of the over-restoration of the Old Masters and of the works of his more conventional contemporaries. He had trained in the studio of Charles Gleyre, who had himself been a pupil of Ingres, and so was an heir to the tradition of the highly 'finished' and varnished painting. However, his own painting style, of building up with small multi-coloured strokes the luminosity of a woman's skin or the sparkle of foliage, could not have been more different. He did say nevertheless in an interview with an American magazine in 1912 that "There is nothing outside the classics."

Forum Articles Impressionism Biography of Auguste Renoir - 1841-1919
Auguste Renoir was one of the co-founders of Impressionism. He was so passionate about painting that he even continued when he was old and suffering from severe arthritis. Renoir then painted with the brush tied to his wrists.
    The Early Years
Auguste Renoir was born in Limoges in France. When he was four years old, the family moved to Paris. The Renoirs lived near the Louvre, which then was partly a royal palace and partly the museum we know today. The Louvre was the first encounter of the young Renoir with art. At the age of only thirteen Pierre Auguste started an apprenticeship at a workshop painting decorations on porcelain. During these years Auguste Renoir learned a lot about colors and drawing. He became a skilled and esteemed craftsman at the porcelain factory. Unfortunately the company went bankrupt and left the young Renoir rethinking about his future.

His father decided to move to Paris in 1845, where the young Renoir was sent to work at the age of 13 as an apprentice to a painter in a china-ware factory, where he learned to imitate the great Rococo painters of the 18th century. Attracted to the Louvre where he studied the paintings of the old masters, he earned some money by copying 18th century paintings. He attended evening classes, and at the age of 21 he became a member of the studio of Charles Gleyre, where he made friends with many of his contemporaries, including Claude Monet Alfred Sisley and Frederic Bazille Renoir was influenced, during his first years, by the Barbizon School, as well as Gustave Courbet . However in common with his contemporaries, Renoir was disenchanted with the formal tuition of the studios, and the forest of Fontainbleau, was a working ground for him. His early paintings were not appreciated neither by the critics nor the public. However this was common for all the impressionist artists, and it was not before a decade after the start of their movement, that their revolutionary approach had become accepted. Renoir was much more concerned with human form rather than nature and landscape, which was
