Frederic Remington (FRED rik RIM ing ton) was born in 1861 in Canton, New York. His father who was a colonel in the cavalry, was a commander in the Civil War.
Remington was a person who liked to hunt, fish, and ride horses. He was a large person; just 5'9" tall, but he weighed 300 pounds.
He first visited the Montana Territory in 1881. He bought a sheep ranch in Kansas, but it was unsuccessful. Next he tried other kinds of businesses; a hardware store and a saloon.
He began painting pictures of the West and Indians. He loved drawing horses. He even had barn doors put on his studio so that he could bring the horses inside. His drawings appeared in Harper's Weekly magazine. In his lifetime he produced more than 3,000 drawings and paintings. A painting or drawing is a two-dimensional work of art. It has height and width.
At one time he was sent to Cuba to illustrate scenes from the Spanish-American War.

F rederic Remington was born in nearby Canton, NY in 1861. His father was a Civil War Hero and his mother came from a prosperous family. Frederic demonstrated great interest in horses and military things at an early age, and was sent to the Highland Military Academy in Massachusetts for secondary schooling. Developing an insatiable appetite for art, Remington received his first formal art training at Yale and the Art Students League, but left college before graduating to pursue the adventure and excitement of the western frontier. He gathered information, made sketches and took photographs which he later used at his home in New Rochelle, NY to create his paintings and bronzes. He died in 1909 of complications following an appendectomy, and is buried in Canton, NY.

Shopping Cart Reviews Table of Contents In the decade preceding his untimely death, Frederic Remington (1861-1909) produced a series of paintings that took as their subject the color of night. This richly illustrated volume is the first to present all of these workssome seventy paintings that secured for Remington the critical acclaim he so coveted. Indeed, these magnificent nocturnes marked an important new direction for the celebrated illustrator, writer, and sculptor of America's vanishing frontier. In these deeply personal works, Remington explored the technical and aesthetic difficulties of painting darkness. Surprisingly, his images are filled with color and lightmoonlight, firelight, candlelight. Focused on the subject the artist had made his ownthe American Westthese paintings reflect Remington's dramatic reworking of the narrative tradition as well as the spare modernism of his late work. Frederic Remington: The Color of Night , accompanying the first exhibition devoted to the nocturnes, includes three insightful essays discussing Remington's nocturnes within the literary, historical, aesthetic, and technological context of his time. The nocturnes do much more than document a night that was rapidly disappearing under bright, newly installed electric lights. They also reveal how this son of a Civil War hero moved from burnishing Theodore Roosevelt's rough riding heroics in Cuba to exploring, like Stephen Crane and Ernest Hemingway, his own soul-searing war experience, and, like Joseph Conrad, to probing America's own heart of darkness.

"The Blue Quail of the Cactus", published in Harper's Monthly
Few artists of the American West could equal the breadth of experience of FREDERIC SACKRIDER REMINGTON (1861-1909) . From the Santa Fe Trail to the Oregon Trail, he came to possess firsthand knowledge as a rancher, a military scout, a hunter and trapper, and as a reporter. Few of his contemporaries were equally devoted to capturing that particular historical moment, the three brief decades that saw the taming of the expansive and dangerous western frontier. Looking back at his career in 1905, Remington wrote: "I knew the wild riders and the vacant land were about to vanish forever...and the more I considered the subject, the bigger the forever loomed. Without knowing how to do it, I began to record some facts around me, and the more I looked the more the panorama unfolded."
As did his talent. His evolving clarity of purpose and the naturally vivid subject matter inspired Remington to compulsively record the details, producing thousands of illustrations in the course of his twenty-three year career. Their accuracy, immediacy and drama, anchored by his equestrian expertise, fused his functions as artist and historian.

Remington is famous for the lively scenes, in paint and in bronze, of the Old West that form the subject matter of most of his works. In the Spanish-American War he served as a war correspondent and artist. Among his paintings, admired for their forthright and unsentimental naturalism, are The Outlier (1909, Brooklyn Museum, New York City) and Cavalry Charge on the Southern Plains (1907, Metropolitan Museum, New York City). In 1895 Remington began to make clay models of his rugged subjects, which were subsequently cast in bronze. His first

Remington: with the Buffalo Soldiers, 1889 - 2
Remington described this illustration, "A Study of Action," in this way: "We would downward among the masses of rock for some time, when we suddenly found ourselves on a shelf of rock. We sought to avoid it by going up and around, but after a tiresome march we were still confronted by a drop of about a hundred feet. I gave up in despair; but the lieutenant, after gazing at the unknown depths which were masked at the bottom by a thick growth of brush, said, 'This is a good place to go down.' I agreed that it was once you got started; but personally I did not care to take the tumble. [Don't forget that Remington was 5 ft. 9 inches in height and weighed 300 lbs.] "Taking his horse by the bits, the young officer began the descent. The slope was at an angle of at least sixty degrees, and was covered with loose dirt and bowlders [sic], with the mask of brush at the bottom concealing awful possibilities of what might be beneath. The horse hesitated a moment, then put his head down and his leg forward and started. The loose earth crumbled, a great stone was precipitated to the bottom with a crash, the horse slid and floundered along. Had the situation not been so serious it would have been funny, because the angle of the incline was so great that the horse actually sat on his haunches like a dog."
