General: Frederick Remington was one of the greatest painters, sculptors, and illustrators of his time. He illustrated scenes of war during the Spanish-American War. Biography: Frederic Remington was born in 1861 in Canton, New York, the son of a Republican newspaper publisher named Seth Pierre who was a Colonel in the cavalry and a Civil war commander. His mother was named Clara Sackrider. From his father, he inherited an interest in the cavalry and military operations. He did not, however, inherit his father’s trim figure, as Remington was 5 foot 9 inches and weighed in at 300 pounds. In his youth, Remington enjoyed hunting and was also an avid horseman. Remington attended the Highland Military Academy in Worcester, Massachusetts through his high school years. Afterwards, he was educated at the Yale College School of Art where he was not the best of students and preferred playing football over art. He returned home in 1880 after the death of his father. He was given a minor position in the state capitol through the influence of an uncle. His first cartoon was printed (and redrawn) by Harper’s Weekly in 1882. He is today considered one of the premier illustrators of his time. He detested the commercialization of art; he felt publishers sacrificed art and truth to action and sensationalism. Remington preferred to draw his favorite subject, horses, but he also enjoyed drawing Indians, soldiers, and cowboys.

He was a newspaper editor and postmaster, and the family was active in local politics and staunchly Republican. No. 590:
FREDERIC REMINGTON by John H. Lienhard Click here for audio of Episode 590. Today, a fable of innocence and experience. The University of Houston's College of Engineering presents this series about the machines that make our civilization run, and the people whose ingenuity created them. I finished high school in the Western logging town of Roseburg, Oregon. A couple of the older boys had summer jobs with the movies. They'd fall off horses for $5.00 a take. Next best to movies was riding in the rodeo. But the movement of Western horse and rider touched us all. We shared a deep-rooted vision of motion, masculinity, and rough-hewn grace. No one did more to shape that shared vision than Frederic Remington. His sketches, paintings and wild kinetic bronzes still defined the West we knew in the late '40s. By now John Ford was building Remington tableaux into his Western movies. He openly copied Remington's composition and palette to gain realism. Remington grew up on a diet of military glory. His father became a Civil War hero when he engaged his men in a foolish action that got most of them killed. Remington was 15 when Custer lay hold on the American imagination with his fiasco. In 1881, young Remington went West to find that kind of glory for himself.

Back to Realism / Naturalism Frederic Remington was an American painter, sculptor, and writer, born in Canton, New York, far from cowboy country, and would become the most famous of all western artists. Shortly after his birth, however, his father left the newspaper he edited and joined the Union cavalry; so the youngster grew up around horses and began to draw them from the time he could wrap his fingers around a pencil and push it where he wanted it to go. Like most artists-to-be, Fred Remington was obsessed with drawing and made almost endless sketches of his world in his notebooks, on the margins of books, around the edges of his school papers. And almost always a horse figured somewhere in the drawing - usually a horse going at full gallop, for the boy liked plenty of action in his art.
  • USA 1940. Frederic Remington.
From the earliest drawings, he showed galloping horses with all four feet off the ground, a practice that won him the ridicule of critics who insisted that a horse always had at least one foot on the ground. It was not till high-speed photography froze galloping horses in midstep that the world discovered the young boy had seen truer than the most experienced horsemen of his day, for the horse can indeed be caught with all four feet off the ground.

SELF-PORTRAIT ON A HORSE
by Frederic Remington
C. 1890 Oil on canvas 29-3/16" X 19-3/8" D uring a career that spanned less than twenty-five years, Frederic Remington produced a huge body of work illustration, painting, sculpture, fiction and non-fiction - the vast majority of it centered on the West. His influence in shaping the West of the popular imagination cannot be overstated. Remington was born in Canton in northern New York on October 4, 1861. His boyhood fostered a lifelong love of horses and the outdoors, while his father's tales of action as a cavalry officer in the Civil War inspired a passion for things military that found a western focus with the battle of the Little Bighorn during the nation's Centennial Year, 1876. At the age of fourteen Remington was smitten with the urge to go see the West for himself. As a member of a prominent family, Remington was expected to graduate from college, prepared for a career in business, but spent only a year and a half at Yale University playing football and studying art. After his father's death, he traveled to Montana in 1881, and experienced his first impression of the West. In 1883, he moved to Kansas where he made an unsuccessful attempt at sheep ranching. The year he spent there was the only time he actually made the West his home, although he made many trips out West and occasionally accompanied the U.S. Cavalry on patrol along the Southwest frontier. Frederic Remington's major paintings were tributes to the Wild West of fantasy. They drew on the artist's experiences for their sense of place and authentic details, but on his imagination for their subject matter. Remington's achievement was to fuse observation and imagination so seamlessly that his contemporaries assumed he had actually witnessed what he portrayed.

W In the mid-1890s, Remington turned his talent to sculpture and quickly mastered the medium. In bronzes such as "The Bronco Buster" and "The Cheyenne," he gave a new dimension to his subjects, charging them with such detail, movement, and energy they seemed ready to leap to life. Remington briefly interrupted his work with Western themes in 1898 when he went to Cuba as a war correspondent and illustrator during the Spanish Civil War. He was deeply disillusioned by the realities of war, finding it not heroic, but appalling. Retiring to an island retreat on the St. Lawrence River, he continued to perfect his craft, creating much of his most famous work. In 1908, Remington made his last trip West, and died soon after of appendicitis at the age of forty-eight.

Frederic Remington
The art of Frederic Remington defined the American West during his lifetime and played a major role in creating the popular image of the West that persists today. In both painting and sculpture, he portrayed the action and drama of the West. Remington's subjects, the military, the cowboy and the American Indian, centered on conflict. In some of his best works, conflict was not only the subject, but also created the aesthetic tension of the artwork. Although closely identified with the American West, Remington actually spent much of his life in the East. Born October 4, 1861 in Canton, New York, Frederic was the only child of Seth Pierre Remington and Clara Bascomb Sackrider Remington. Remington attended the Yale College School of the Fine Arts for three semesters beginning in 1878 and also played football on the Yale team. After his father died, he left school and started working as a reporter. In 1881 he made his first trip west to Montana Territory and subsequently he sold his first sketch of cowboys to Harper's Weekly . In 1883 he bought and worked a sheep ranch in Peabody, Kansas. On October 1, 1884 Remington married Eva Adele Caten of Gloversville, New York. His ranch and other business ventures in Kansas City, Missouri, being unsuccessful, Remington ended his only Western residence and then traveled in the Southwest.

"'Art', wrote Frederic Remington in 1905, 'is a she-devil of a mistress, and if at times in earlier days she would not even stoop to my way of thinking, I have persevered and will so continue.' "He had just been describing one particular "earlier day" around a Montana campfire in 1881, when an old-timer who had also come out there from New York and had since spent his life following the frontier, convinced him that "there is no more West." At which point Remington decided to "try to record some facts around me." "So doing, he not only aimed himself towards a lucrative career, but helped to inaugurate the world-wide bonanza called the Old West, or the Wild West, of which there would always seem to be more. This would have interested Remington Senior, a man of somewhat venturesome but practical affairs, who was chagrined when in 1879 his son chose the art school at Yale instead of a business course. Young Frederic was even more chagrined when he got there and found at the art school a classic approach to art principles and to drawing. That was when he first noticed the she-devil refusing to stoop.
