Every Man a Rembrandt
Propelled by postwar prosperity, increased leisure time, and the democratic idea that anyone might paint a picture, paint by number became a popular pastime in the early 1950s. Each paint-by-number kit included two brushes and up to ninety premixed, numbered paints ready to be applied to numbered spaces on an accompanying canvas or board. As the spaces were filled in, the gradual revelation of a picture surprised and delighted. One grateful hobbyist likened the process to an addiction. "I know I'm not much of an artist and never will be," he or she wrote to American Artist. "I've tried in vain repeatedly to draw or paint something recognizable. . . . Why oh why didn't you or someone else tell me before this how much fun it is to use these wonderful 'paint by number' sets? . . . am on my fifth set and just can't leave them alone." For critics, the paint-by-number phenomenon provided ample evidence of the mindless conformity gripping national life and culture. "I don't know what America is coming to," one writer complained to

Ettore Bugatti’s younger brother Rembrandt was born in Milan on 16 October 1884. As his parents moved in a circle of friends that included the composers Giacomo Puccini and Leoncavallo, the sculptor Ercole Rosa and the painter Giovanni Segantini, he was exposed to artists and the world of art from a very early age. Inspired and encouraged by the sculptor Prince Paul Troubetzkoy, Rembrandt soon himself embarked on a career as an artist. His earliest works were woodcarvings; in 1900 he began studying at the Milan Academy of Arts and at 16 years of age he was already a well-trained sculptor. He was exceptionally gifted and showed a particular talent for drawing. It was not long before he developed his own unique style and discovered his primary subject: animals. His oldest extant bronze sculpture (from the year 1901) represents a lowing cow, and by 1903 he had already shown his work at exhibitions in Milan, Turin, and Venice. In 1904, Rembrandt moved with his family to Paris, where he was accepted into the Soci©t© Nationale des Beaux-Arts. Three years later he relocated to Antwerp, where he experienced the most successful year of his artistic career. Antwerp was home to Belgium’s most influential art school, the “Antwerp Academy”, and what’s more: the city boasted a zoo showcasing numerous exotic animals. It was during this period that Rembrandt produced his sculpture of a rearing elephant, a copy of which adorned his brother’s world-famous Bugatti Royale in the 1920s.

Interesting In an article published on September 16, 2004 in The New England Journal of Medicine, Margaret S. Livingstone, professor of neurobiology of Harvard Medical School, suggests that Rembrandt, whose eyes failed to align correctly, suffered from stereo blindness. She made this conclusion after studying 36 of Rembrandt's self-portraits.
Because he could not form a normal binocular vision, his brain automatically switched to one eye for many visual tasks. This disability could have helped him to flatten images as he saw, and then put it onto the two-dimensional canvas. In the author's words, this could have been a gift to a great painter like him:
Art teachers often instruct students to close one eye in order to flatten what they see. Therefore, stereo blindness might not be a handicap — and might even be an asset — for some artists.

Contributors: Carol Gerten-Jackson Mark Harden Rembrandt (1606-69). The greatest artist of the Dutch school was Rembrandt. He was a master of light and shadow whose paintings, drawings, and etchings made him a giant in the history of art. Rembrandt Harmenszoon van Rijn was born on July 15, 1606, in Leiden, the Netherlands. His father was a miller who wanted the boy to follow a learned profession, but Rembrandt left the University of Leiden to study painting. His early work was devoted to showing the lines, light and shade, and color of the people he saw about him. He was influenced by the work of Caravaggio and was fascinated by the work of many other Italian artists. When Rembrandt became established as a painter, he began to teach and continued teaching art throughout his life.

Rembrandt Peale
The second son of artist Charles Willson Peale, Rembrandt Peale followed his father's interests closely. As a young teenager he had begun to paint portraits, by 17 had made his first portrait of George Washington. He aided his father's excavation of two mastodon skeletons in 1801, and the following year traveled to London, where he exhibited the skeleton and studied with Benjamin West. Peale returned to Europe in 1808 to make portraits of important men for the gallery his father had established in Philadelphia. After Peale's return to Philadelphia in 1810, his career was varied; he became proprietor of his father's museum, taught art, wrote a popular drawing manual, pursued technological experiments, and continued to paint portraits and allegorical works. He also produced over seventy copies of his famous portrait of Washington, calling himself "the only painter living who ever saw Washington." Brady included this portrait in a special "Artist's Souvenir," along with images of Willam Page Frederick Church , and Charles Loring Elliott Mathew Brady Studio

MARITIME MATTERS Ocean liner history and cruise ship news [Home] [Table of Contents] [Shipping Mall] [Index of ships]
S.S. REMBRANDT (ex ROTTERDAM) Save Our Ship of State REMBRANDT by Peter Knego Not So Humble Heritage Arguably the most magnificent and well-preserved vintage liner in existance, Premier Cruise's 37,783 gross ton SS REMBRANDT has changed little from her origins as Holland America Line's (HAL) fifth ROTTERDAM. Launched by Queen Juliana in a gala ceremony on 13 September 1958, and completed the following summer, the ROTTERDAM was the last great Dutch "ship of state", employing the finest artisans from Holland in her construction and fitting out process. The 749 by 93.8 foot ship commenced her maiden voyage from Rotterdam to New York on 3 September 1959 and was at first considered controversial, if ungainly, for her aft-situated twin uptakes. In the ensuing years, this look became the norm with major passenger ships, and she made the transition from trend-setting newcomer to "grand dame" of the seas. ROTTERDAM was powered by geared De Schelde turbines that produce an SHP of 38,500 to drive twin screws at a service speed of 21.5 knots. Trendsetter Becomes "Grande Dame" HAL designed the ship for both transatlantic travel and cruising, and ROTTERDAM was able to survive the advent of the jumbo jet admirably, switching to full-time cruising in 1969. Aside from her aft-situated machinery, the ship was innovative in her layout, which originally accommodated 665 first class and 801 tourist class passengers in separate, but nearly equal, quarters. A singular secret stairwell (inspired by that of the Chateau Chambord) cleverly served both classes, each of which had a full deck of public rooms and equivalent dining rooms. On her early cruises, she became one class by the mere opening up of her stairwell, offering all passengers the full run of the ship without a noticeable distinction between the two class levels.

ARTHUR L. FARSTAD Editor

I. Introduction
Who was this Rembrandt van Ryn, and why should evangelicals take an interest in his work? In 1991 the had a fascinating article tell us otherwise. One thing nearly all of us Protestants who have visited this beautiful and well-presented gallery cannot help noticing is the heavy preponderance, not only of Roman Catholic artists, but also of specifically Catholic themes. Not merely biblical themes in which Mary appears, but exclusively Catholic doctrines lavishly illustrated in glowing blues, golds, and vermillions. There are religious art. On this point he was right, at least compared to Roman Catholic painters. The reason is obvious: Catholic churches are nearly always heavily decorated and Protestant church buildings (other than Anglican Cathedrals and some others) are not. Also, Catholic art was often endowed by wealthy churches, monasteries, and clergy. There are
