62. Robert Rauschenberg Biography Innovative Print Making
robert rauschenberg is one of the most influential American artists, having led the direction of contemporary art since his first showings in New York City
http://www.e-fineart.com/biography/rauschenberg.html
ROBERT RAUSCHENBERG (1925- )
In 1962 Rauschenberg made his first lithographs and silkscreens, and has been involved with innovative print making since then. His combinations of disparate images made through photo-transfer, silkscreen, incorporation of found objects, and painted forms resulted in striking juxtapositions. He has experimented with disks, motors, Plexiglas, sound, and variations in techniques in the transfer of photographs to silk-screened editioned works of art. Rauschenberg has frequently noted the great influence that making prints has had on his art. The interplay of activity in different media is at the core of his work, which has been marked throughout his career by a sense of experiment and exploration. In 1998 the prestigious Solomon R. Guggenhiem Museum had a mammoth retrospective of 400 art works by Robert Rauschenberg. His artwork spiraled up all the main floors of the museum and was touted as the largest retrospective to date for any artist at the Guggenhiem. Rauschenberg is considered by many to be the master artist of his generation, and he is still at the cutting edge. We are proud to present these works by such an important and prominent artist.

general information virtual visit español The 20th edition from the series “Contexts of the Permanent Collection” in the Museo Thyssen-Bornemisza is the first to be devoted to a living artist. The subject is Robert Rauschenberg (born Port Arthur, Texas, 1925) and the exhibition focuses in particular on his painting Express of 1963.
Express is one of a small group of works that marks Rauschenberg’s evolution towards a new pictorial and expressive style in which he was able to convey his visual universe while simultaneously resolving with great audacity the problem of reconciling figuration and abstraction. From 1962 onwards the artist began to experiment with a new artistic technique – oil, ink and serigraphy on canvas – which would became the basis of his work over the following years. This method allowed him to incorporate enlarged photographic images printed on silk panels into his works. He then transferred these images to his canvases, superimposing and combining them in the manner of collage, before completing the composition in oil.
Rauschenberg began these serigraphic paintings in the autumn of 1962, emphasising the use of black and white with a resulting dark, austere mood, and continued until the end of August 1963, the year when he started to introduce colour to convey a more positive mind-set. The enlarged images are reproductions of photographs taken by the artist himself or selected from magazines and depict historical and contemporary news events. Many recur in more than one work; in the present exhibition, for example, the same image of an eagle, the official symbol of the USA, appears in Kite and in

Combines
by Robert Rauschenberg
Organized by Chief Curator Paul Schimmel, Robert Rauschenberg: Combines will focus on the Combines created roughly between 1954 and 1964, the most important decade in the artist’s 50-year career. The most complete survey of these works ever mounted, the exhibition will feature close to eighty key works drawn from major collections.
Poetic and lush, the Combines present layers of complex and sometimes conflicting information. This prescient approach has become increasingly relevant in the current age of cascading information, when even the most groundbreaking artists are referencing and sampling disparate elements to create new forms. The Combines suggest the fragility of definitions, the fluidity of materials, and the complexity of forms that is characteristic of Rauschenberg’s works. The artist’s handling of materials provides a precise physical evolutionary link between the painterliness of Abstract Expressionism and iconographical, subject-driven qualities of early Pop Art. The book will constitute the most complete survey of the Combines ever presented, as well as the most rigorous analysis of their political, social, autobiographical, and aesthetic significance.

Rauschenberg, Robert (b. 1925) Robert Rauschenberg is one of the most prolific and innovative artists of the late twentieth and early twenty-first centuries. He was at the core of a group of interdisciplinary artists including Jasper Johns, John Cage, and Merce Cunningham, whose influence on the face of American art has been nothing short of revolutionary. Dubbed both Neo-Dada for their use of found objects and Proto-Pop for their inclusion of media imagery, Rauschenberg and Johns led painting away from the introspection of the dominant Abstract Expressionist movement to the everyday world of common objects and recognizable imagery, thus paving the way for such Pop painters as Andy Warhol. Sponsor Message.
The experimental atmosphere at Black Mountain encouraged artists of all disciplines to share ideas and to collaborate. Rauschenberg participated in an early multi-media performance there with composer John Cage and choreographer Merce Cunningham. Cage's interest in Zen Buddhism and his philosophy of favoring outside inspiration rather than personal expression had a great impact on Rauschenberg. Rauschenberg began including common objects in his art through collage and assemblage. He often employed the bravura brushwork of the Abstract Expressionists, but he also incorporated objects from real life such as pillows, brooms, tires, and all manner of salvaged detritus.

Associated with the Pop Art movement in his early career, Rauschenberg is celebrated for assemblages and collage-based works, which often incorporate ordinary cast-off or mass-produced objects. His fusion of imagery and objects effectively blurs the boundaries between traditional art-making genres and methods, redefining conventional notions of painting, sculpture, photography, printmaking, and performance art. Rauschenberg has frequently noted the great influence that making prints has had on his paintings. The interplay of activity in different media lies at the core of his work, which has been marked throughout his career by a sense of experiment and exploration. No longer considered intimate album images, they are now recognized as objects with visual power great enough to rival the impact of paintings. Many of projects at Gemini make each piece virtually unique by incorporating chance variations within the editions. Robert Rauschenberg: Current Scenarios, an exhibition of new and earlier work by this contemporary American master marks the artist's first major presence at the Wadsworth Atheneum in forty years. For over fifty years, random order, collage and assemblage, and image transfer techniques have been central to Rauschenberg's artistic production. This will be evident in seventeen works from the new, photo-based series entitled Scenarios, which will have their first public showing in this exhibition. Measuring approximately 7 by 10 feet, these large-scale panels depict commonplace scenes and objects, such as traffic signs, newspapers, billboards, plants and animals, derived from Rauschenberg's vast archive of found and self-generated imagery. Art ripped from the headlines might describe Currents, Rauschenberg's 1970 collage and silkscreen series. The Wadsworth Atheneum has two portfolios from Currents in its permanent collection-Surface (eighteen images) and Features (twenty six images)-that have never before been exhibited. In addition, the exhibition will feature several works from the Gluts series that the artist began in 1986. Rauschenberg has described these metal wall reliefs and sculptures as "souvenirs without nostalgia." "There could be no better way to re-state the Wadsworth Atheneum's long-standing commitment to contemporary art than this exhibition, said Director Willard Holmes. "It unites brilliant new work from one of America's greatest living artists along with work from three decades ago that had a profound effect on art-making in our times."
