Valentine Cameron Prinsep Prinsep began painting with Watts , collaborated on the Oxford Union murals in , was associated with the St John's Wood Clique , and was later influenced by Millias and by Leighton , to whom he was very close. An affable giant of a man, Prinsep moved in high-class circles, culminating in an invitation to paint the official group portrait at the Indian Durbar of (Royal Collection). This major undertaking involved on-the-spot sketching, followed by the energetic pursuit of Rajahs and other worthies up and down India for their portraits. The result of all this labour is lareg but predictably dull, except to the historian. Initially supported by his family, Prinsep married money (and a wife 22 years his junior, in ), and contemporary accounts suggest that his wealth compromised his artistic drive. Maybe there was a teensy-weensy element of jealousy? But in any case modern commentators repeat the mantra. What is certainly true is that relatively few of his works are now able to be seen, and some of those that are on view, or widely reproduced, appear unremarkable and derivative. However, because he was not financially reliant on his art, Prinsep was able to explore subjects that were not guaranteed sellers. Valentine Cameron Prinsep, 1838-1904: An Overview Victorian Web Home Visual Arts Victorian Painters Pre-Raphaelitism Biography For the first few years of his artistic career, Prinsep was very closely involved with the Pre-Raphaelite movement . He later gained academic honours for large decorative and historical subjects. His family were connected with the East India Company. He was destined for the Indian Civil service and educated at Haileybury. However G. F. Watts , his mother's house guest, encouraged his artistic tendencies and in 1857 'plunged him into the Pre-Raphaelite styx,' writing to a friend: 'I don't mean to say that I held the fine young baby of six foot two by the heel or wish to imply the power of moulding his opinions at my pleasure; but to continue my figure, I found him loitering on the banks and gave hint a good shove, and now his gods are Rossetti Hunt and Millais In 1857 Prinsep painted one of the murals in the Oxford Union with Rossetti and his friends, and he was very close to Rossetti for the next few years. THE CORRESPONDENCE OF JAMES McNEILL WHISTLER [close this window] Valentine Cameron Prinsep, 1836-1904 Nationality : British Date of Birth : 14 February 1836 Place of Birth : Calcutta Date of Death : 11 November 1904 Place of Death : Holland Park, London Identity: Valentine ('Val') Cameron Prinsep, a portrait, historical and genre painter and writer, was the son of Henry Thoby Prinsep, a wealthy Indian civil servant, and Sara Pattle, the daughter of James Pattle, a Bengali civil servant. He was one of four children, his siblings being Henry, Arthur and Alice. In 1884 Val married Florence Leyland, the daughter of JW's patron, the Liverpool collector and shipping magnate F. R. Leyland. His maternal aunt Virginia, who lived for a time with his family in London, was a known beauty and modelled for George Frederick Watts. His maternal aunt Julia Margaret Cameron was a photographer. Life: When the Prinsep family took Little Holland House in Kensington in December 1850 G. F. Watts was invited to join them. In fact he became a guest in their home until 1875. Little Holland House became something of a haven for artists and writers, including Thackeray, Tennyson, Browning, Trollope, Edward Burne-Jones and Dante Gabriel Rossetti. Val, who was encouraged to become a painter by Watts, studied under the artist from 1856. The following year he worked with members of the Pre-Raphaelite circle on the Oxford Union murals, painting Sir Pelleas Leaving the Lady Ettarde . Early works such as the Honey Queen (ca 1859; Manchester City Art Gallery) showed the influence which the art of Rossetti and Burne-Jones had on him. He toured Italy with Burne-Jones in 1859.

Valentine Cameron Prinsep RA (1838-1904) Val Prinsep, in Rossettilike pose. Val Prinsep, the Pre-Raphaelite , historical and genre painter, was born in Calcutta, son of an Indian civil servant. He was educated in England, where his remarkable circle of family friends included Rossetti Ruskin , Carlyle, Gladstone, Disraeli, Halle and Darwin. It was G. F. Watts who persuaded Prinsep to take up painting, and he studied in Paris under Gleyre, where his fellow students included E. J. Poynter , Du Maurier and Whistler. Back in England, Prinsep was one of those who assisted Rossetti in the fresco decorations of the Oxford Union in 1857. He travelled to Italy in the company of Burne-Jones in 1859-60, and on his return to London became quite successful. In 1878 he was elected ARA, and a fortuitous marriage in 1884 (to Florence Leyland, daughter of a rich ship-owner from Liverpool) made him financially independent. He became RA somewhat tardily in 1894, and from 1900-1903 was Professor of Painting at the Academy. Prinsep produced several pictures in the Pre-Raphaelite style, including
