Sir Edward John Poynter Bt PRA RWS (1839-1919) Home Victorian Painters Sir Edward Poynter Drawings Biography Edward Poynter was second only to Frederic Leighton as an exponent of Victorian neo-classicism. His training as an artist took place partly in Europe; he coincided with Leighton in Rome in 1853 and spent the years 1856-59 as a student at Gleyre's atelier in Paris. These semi-bohemian years were described by Poynter's comrade George du Maurier in his novel Trilby . In 1860 Poynter commenced upon a career in London which was to bring him much prestige and many honours. His great Royal Academy exhibition successes were mainly reconstructions of events or situations set in ancient history, attempts to give a visual account of the appearance of the Ancient World. The most famous of these are Israel in Egypt and The Catapult . A parallel group were his mythological subjects, In both types Poynter took great trouble to make the details of the paintings as archaeologically accurate as possible. Despite being only a few years younger than the generation of High Victorian artists Poynter long outlived his great contemporaries. He succeeded Millais as President of the Royal Academy in 1896 and then lived on into a very different age when his-most celebrated paintings were no longer appreciated or understood.

Edward Poynter From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Jump to: navigation search Cave of the Storm Nymphs (1903) Edward Poynter, private collection Sir Edward John Poynter, 1st Baronet, KB PRA March 20 July 26 ) was a British painter , designer, draughtsman and art administrator. The son of Ambrose Poynter, an architect , he was born in Paris. He was educated at Ipswich School and Brighton College before studying in London , in Rome (where he became a great admirer of Michelangelo ) and with Charles Gleyre in Paris (where he met James McNeill Whistler ). He became best known for his large historical paintings such as Israel in Egypt (1867, his first great success), Visit of the Queen of Sheba (1871–75) and King Solomon Israel in Egypt (1867) Edward Poynter Poynter held a number of official posts: he was the first Slade Professor from 1871 to 1875, was Principal of the National Art Training School from 1875 to 1881, was Director of the National Gallery from 1894 to 1904 (overseeing the opening of the Tate Gallery ), and became a Royal Academician in 1876. Sir Edward John Poynter , first baronet, President of the Royal Academy from 1896 to 1918, and Director of the National Gallery from 1894 to 1905, was the son of Ambrose Poynter, an architect, well-known in his day as the designer, among many other buildings, of St Katherine's Hospital, Regents Park. On his mother's side he was the grandson of Thomas Banks , RA., a sculptor of eminence, whose funeral oration was pronounced by Flaxman. The young Poynter was of artistic descent on both sides, and though neither of his ancestors was a painter, his love for architectural backgrounds and for a sculpturesque treatment of form may perhaps be traced to those inherited influences. Sir Edward J. Poynter Bt PRA (1836-1919) The Catapult , from an engraving of 1896 E. J. Poynter, last of the great Victorian Classical painters , was born in Paris, his father Ambrose Poynter being an architect and landscape painter. He studied under W. C. T. Dobson, afterwards at the RA Schools, and then returned to Paris, working under Charles Gleyre at the same time as Alma Tadema , Whistler and Du Maurier. He was very much part of the British establishment thereafter, becoming ARA in 1868, first Slade Professor of University College London 1871-5, RA in 1877 and Director of the National Gallery 1894-1904. In 1896, Poynter was elected President of the Royal Academy , narrowly beating Briton Riviere to the post, and he seems to have got the job because of his very wide teaching, lecturing and administrative experience and depth of scholarship. Poynter's term as PRA came after Millais 's brief occupation of the post, and follows rather from his predecessor Leighton , who was PRA for nearly two decades. It had been Leighton who, in 1854, originally persuaded Poynter, then painting only landscapes, to turn to figure studies, and he helped the younger man with drapery studies. Like Leighton, Poynter studied abroad, trained as an academic artist, and was a superior draughtsman, technically masterful, working on largely ideal Greek-style pictures. Again like Leighton, Poynter was enormously influential, though in his case it was because of his large number of official positions and teaching posts. He was created a baronet in 1902 - only Leighton was made a Lord for being PRA.
