piss art:Images of urination in 20th century art Christopher Chapman Notes for a slide lecture presented at the University of South Australia, Adelaide, 9 September 1997, University of South Australia School of Art, 17 October 1997, Artspace, Sydney, 7 February 1998, Mercury Cinema, Adelaide, 4 November 1998. In 1997 I curated an exhibition called 'ambient (male) identity' (Contemporary Art Centre of South Australia, 5-28 September 1997) that explored how artists communicate identity through abstract or conceptual means. Thinking about the coding of male identity in abstract art led me to look at Andy Warhol's 'Oxidation' paintings. These were made by the artist and his friends urinating on to canvas prepared with copper oxide. When I began to look for more images that represented urination as a sign of maleness, I found many. This presentation is a basic iconographic study. It looks at images of urination in art as a sign of abjection, liberation, political resistance, eroticism, fraternity, metaphor and gender difference. The approach is context specific, it looks at what the activity of urinating means in different contexts, and what it says about the way we understand our bodies and ourselves through art. The presentation looks at a range of images of art produced mostly over the past twenty years. What we discover is that this activity is one that is cultural and social, and its meaning isn't fixed.

Dr. Lori's comments on the Pollock movie I usually stick to reviewing artist's works and fine art exhibitions, but I just saw the Jackson Pollock movie starring Ed Harris and I thought that my expertise allowed me to make some comments on the film. I want to also help fill some gaps from an art historian's point of view. While I was happy to see that Hollywood has finally recognized the work of Abstract Expressionist, Jackson Pollock, on the silver screen, I would have liked to have seen more content portrayed about his work. While Lee Krasner's consistent confidence in Pollock's work was evident in the movie, the screenplay failed to demonstrate how important she was as a fellow artist and as an advocate of his art. Pollock's wife Lee Kranser Considerable information about Jackson Pollock's wife Lee Krasner was not included in the film. She was vital to his artistic growth as she shared her intuitive background in art and art history with Pollock. Krasner's background and knowledge of the New York art world as well as her art training with European master, Hans Hoffman, helped to guide Pollock in the studio and beyond. Her ability to control Pollock as necessary and to entice the circle of critics around them proved paramount to his career. She was seen as a personal and social tour de force, but she should have also been viewed as an artistic one.

    The $50 Million Question
New documentary takes on the case of an accidental art collector versus the art-world elite
    By Paddy Johnson
How many times do I have to read about the fact that Teri Horton, the owner of a Jackson Pollock painting with disputed authenticity, only has an eighth grade education? She may not have finished school, but there's no way you would know that if director Harry Moses hadn't chosen to emphasize this bit of biographical information in his new documentary ? (opening Wednesday at IFC Center), a film about a retired truck driver who has dedicated the last 14 years of her life trying to get the presumed Jackson Pollock painting she bought for five dollars authenticated. It doesn't help that virtually every writer in the country (barring dealer and blogger Edward Winkleman ) is dutifully repeating the information as though it is of great relevance to a story that actually has less to do with class in America than it does with perhaps the biggest unwitting thrift store find in history. But this is what happens when you let marketing tell you what a movie is about rather than just watching the film and figuring it out on your own. The narrative itself is set up by Horton, whose crassness is uniquely charming. "You ain't going to believe this shit," she says, launching into a story about how she haggled a second-hand store owner down from eight dollars to five for a painting she intended to give to her friend. Said friend rejected the work, and upon Horton's attempt to unload the piece at a yard sale, an art teacher suggested she hold on to it because it might be valuable. "Who the fuck is Jackson Pollock?" Horton asks, thus christening Moses' film.

Physicists Refute Analysis Of Jackson Pollock's Paintings
ScienceDaily (Dec. 6, 2006) See also: Case physics doctoral student Kate Jones-Smith first encountered these questions in December 2004 when preparing for a weekly astrophysics seminar . Jones-Smith performed a Google search that linked her to research by University of Oregon physicist Richard Taylor and collaborators, who claim that Jackson Pollock's famous drip paintings, are fractals. Fractals are complex geometric shapes that have been studied by mathematicians since the 1970s. In articles that appeared in scientific journals and news magazines including Nature, Physics World and Scientific American, Taylor and coworkers also claim that fractal analysis can be used to distinguish Pollock's drip paintings from imitations. Intrigued, Jones-Smith began to examine Taylor's articles, but quickly found that the work was seriously flawed She showed that doodles that she could make in minutes using Adobe Photoshop were as fractal as any Pollock drip painting, vividly refuting Taylor's claim that Pollock was able to generate fractals by hand only because he had attained a mastery of chaotic motion. Jones-Smith presented a pointed critique of Taylor's work to Case astrophysicists and was encouraged to write up her critique for publication. But since Taylor's original work had appeared in Nature five years earlier, she thought interest in the topic had waned.

The Case of Pollock’s Fractals Focuses on Physics

By RANDY KENNEDY Published: December 2, 2006 Correction Appended In an article published this week in the prestigious science journal Nature, two physicists contend that a method intended to identify complex geometric patterns in the seemingly chaotic drip paintings of Jackson Pollock is flawed and may be useless in the increasingly convoluted world of authenticating Pollock’s work. They were found by Alex Matter, whose father, Herbert, and mother, Mercedes, were artists and friends of Pollock’s. Mr. Matter believes the paintings are authentic Pollocks, and if he is proved right, they will not only be worth millions of dollars but will also add an important new chapter to Pollock’s work.

Introduction Body Composition Formula Methods ... Fitness Testing
    Introduction
The subcutaneous fat comprises of approximately one half the total fat in the body. By the end of World War I, anthropologists realized the feasibility of measuring subcutaneous fat. By 1930, researchers developed an instrument to measure selected sites on the body with relative accuracy. (Katch and McArdle, 1983) The thickness of a double layer of skin and the fat beneath it is measured with the special caliber that exerts a constant tension on the site. Skinfolds must be taken at precise standard locations if the results are to be reliable and used for comparative purposes. (Katch and McArdle, 1983) Lohman and Roche made recommendations in techniques to derive skin fold readings based upon a variety of methods used in the literature throughout the years. Reliability and the validity of the many sites was reported in predicting body density. (Lohman and Roche, 1998) Katch and McArdle express that population specific equations only accurately predict body fat (BF) for a subject that is similar to the population that the formula was derived from. According to Katch and McArdle, the major draw back with the skinfold technique lies in the extensive expertise one must have in taking readings accurately and with consistency. Katch and McArdle claim that with research purposes, the investigators usually has already performed several thousand skin folds. (Katch and McArdle, 1993)

            What are these?
Saturday, 4 November 2006 If he were alive today, Jackson Pollock, the American painter who electrified the art world with his eruptions of swirling lines and squiggles, would be puzzled by the news. How could it possibly be that one of his paintings - not a Picasso, a Gauguin or Van Gogh - has become the most valuable in history? After all, not everyone has ever been quite convinced about Pollock and his genius, never mind that he was a drunk, a philanderer and a depressive. Isn't it possible that you or I could splatter some paint around on an empty canvas and command an entire wall of the Museum of Modern Art with the result?

Jackson Pollock’s Fractals The abstract painter Jackson Pollock (1912-1956) is widely known for his spectacular, wall-sized paintings, which typically feature a combination of swirling drips, bright splotches, and bold, rhythmic streaks. Pollock’s signature technique, which he developed in the late 1940s and early 1950s, was to drip house paint—in colors such as black, white, silver, taupe, and teal—from hardened, worn-out brushes, sticks, and other applicators onto enormous sheets of canvas spread across the floor. His approach, however, was somewhat more systematic than the chaotic results might suggest. Pollock would begin by using a series of fluid strokes to draw a collection of loopy figures. When the paint dried, he would connect the scattered shapes with darker, thicker slashes of pigment. Additional layers of dripped, poured, and hurled paint would further obscure the original forms, creating a dense web of trails across the canvas. Physicist Richard P. Taylor of the University of New South Wales in Sydney, Australia, who is also trained as an artist, has taken a mathematical look at Pollock’s splatter paintings to try to uncover the secret of their appeal to many viewers.
