Camille Pissarro's early years Camille Pissarro was born in Charlotte Amalie, the capital of St. Thomas, Virgin Islands (at that time, the Danish West Indies) on July 10, 1830 to parents of French and Jewish origin. He rejected working in the family's import/export business and pursued the study of art as a child. Camille attended boarding school in Passy, a Paris suburb, in 1842 and after working for his family's business for a short time, he traveled with the Danish painter, Fritz Melbye. Relocating to Paris, Pissarro settled there in October of 1855 and met many of the artists of the day including Camille Corot. Corot encouraged him to paint the landscape focusing on the village imagery of river towns near the Seine and Marne rivers. Pissarro studied art at the Atelier Suisse in Paris with fellow artists, Claude Monet, Paul Cezanne, and Armand Guillaumin. By the late 1860s, Pissarro's landscapes were praised by the prominent contemporary art critic, Emile Zola. Pissarro became one of the most influential members of the French Impressionist movement, not only as an artist, but also as a teacher becoming the only artist to participate in all eight Impressionist exhibitions. Abandoning his studio After moving to Louveciennes in May of 1869, Pissarro and his family were forced to leave in July of 1870 abandoning his studio to escaped to London to avoid the Franco-Prussian war. While in London, Pissarro meets art dealer, Paul Durand Ruel, who is a fellow exile in London. With two children between them, the couple (Camille Pissarro and Julie Vellay) reside in London returning to France after the war. They return to Louveciennes in June of 1871 to find that Pissarro's studio has been sacked losing approximately 1,500 works of art. Moving to Pontoise in 1872 and painting there for about 15 years, Pissarro is visited by many of his colleagues including Claude Monet, Paul Cezanne, and Edouard Manet. In a community that valued technical detail, realism, and idealized subjects, the new painting in the salon was seen as absurd and Pissarro's work was met with great opposition.

Within Impressionist "family" Camille Pissarro played the role of the best teacher, as well as that of the good shepherd who guided the strays back to the flock, the better to form a common front against all those who would have liked to see the group break up. Pissarro, along with Degas and Monet, was the most active in collective Impressionist exhibitions. Moreover he was the only one to participate in all of them. Through all his life he was very close to the younger generation of painters. He was quick to take an interest in Gauguin, at another moment he gave in to the enticement of the scientific conceptions of Seurat's pointilism. Pissarro was a commited, discreet and open man. As a painter he deliberately chose the most humble and desolate subjects mostly in the countryside at Louveciennes and Pontoise.

The following year Monet and his wife, Camille, whom he had married in 1870, settled at Argenteuil, which became a semipermanent home (he continued to travel throughout his life) for the next 6 years. Occupation: Painter Nationality: France Executive summary: French Impressionist painter French painter, was born at St. Thomas in the Danish Antilles, of Jewish parents of Spanish extraction. He went to Paris at the age of twenty, and, as a pupil of Jean Corot, came into close touch with the Barbizon masters. Though at first he devoted himself to subjects of the kind which will ever be associated with the name of Millet, his interest was entirely absorbed by the landscape, and not by the figures. He subsequently fell under the spell of the rising impressionist movement and threw in his lot with Claude Monet and his friends, who were at that time the butt of public ridicule. Like Monet, he made sunlight, and the effect of sunlight on the objects of nature, the chief subjects of his paintings, whether in the country or on the Paris boulevards. About 1885 he took up the laboriously scientific method of the pointillists, but after a few years of these experiments he returned to a broader and more attractive manner. Indeed, in the closing years of his life he produced some of his finest paintings, in which he set down with admirable truth the peculiar atmosphere and color and teeming life of the boulevards, streets and bridges of Paris and Rouen. He died in Paris in 1903.

Camille Pissarro was born in 1830 and died in 1903. He was a French painter, born in Saint Thomas, Virgin Islands. He moved to Paris in 1855 and studied there with the French landscape artist Jean Baptiste Camille Corot. He later became associated with the Barbizon school. Afterwards, he came under the influence of Claude Monet and other impressionists. During the Franco German War he lived in England, where he made a study of the landscapes of Joseph Mallord Turner. On his return to France he settled in Normandy. For awhile, in the 1880's, he experimented with pointillism, the neoimpressionist style of painting with dots of color, but later returned to the impressionist school. A painter of sunshine and the subtle effects of light, he often painted scenes of Paris, Le Havre, and London. An excellent teacher, he influenced many of his contemporary French artists, notably Paul Gauguin and Paul Cezanne. Pissarro's paintings are included in the collections of the Luxembourg Gallery, in Paris and many of the leading galleries of Europe. The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City has his "Bather In The Woods painting.
