Pablo Picasso's Confessions
In many of my discussions with people who defend "modern art", people express the idea that the artist is by definition right about his evaluation of his own "art" and that nobody else can really decide whether or not it is good or valuable since "It could be that there's really something deeply important hidden beyond your ability to interpret it." Though I don't subscribe to that position myself, it might be instructive for such people to listen to what Pablo Picasso, one of the early proponents of the ugly and meaningless in 20th century painting had to say about his work. This page previously included quotes reportedly taken from an interview with Picasso by Giovanni Papini called " Picasso Confesses ". As it turns out this was a fantasy interview which never took place. As it turns out, Picasso said numerous things at least as bad as what was reported earlier.
On Sayings...
"If you take my sayings and explode them in the air, they remain only sayings. But if you fit them together in their correct places, you will have the whole story." (Dor del la Souchere, 1960, p. 13)

Along with Georges Braque, Picasso is best known as one of the creators of Cubism , though he utilized many styles during his career. In the paintings of his Blue Period (1901-1904), such as The Old Guitarist, Picasso worked with a monochromatic palette , flattened forms, and tragic, sorrowful themes. The tragic themes and expressive style of Picasso's Blue Period began after a close friend committed suicide in Paris . During this time, the artist was sympathetic to the plight of the downtrodden and painted many canvases depicting the miseries of the poor, the ill, and those cast out of society. He too knew what it was like to be impoverished, having been nearly penniless during all of 1902. Symbolist Spain El Greco

"When I was a child, my mother said to me, 'If you become a soldier, you will become a general. If you become a monk, then you will end up as Pope.' Instead, I became a painter, and wound up as Picasso." — Pablo Picasso (1881-1973)
Born in Malaga, Spain, Pablo Picasso is probably the most famous artist of the twentieth century. During his artistic career, which lasted more than 75 years, he created thousands of works, not only paintings but also sculptures, prints, and ceramics, using all kinds of materials.
He almost single-handedly created modern art. He changed art more profoundly than any other artist of the century. First famous for his pioneering role in Cubism, Picasso continued to develop his art with a pace and vitality comparable to the accelerated technological and cultural changes of the twentieth century. Each change embodied a radical new idea, and it might be said that Picasso lived several artistic lifetimes.

"Art w a s h e s away from the soul the d u s t of everyday life Pablo Picasso Pioneer and master artist Pablo Ruiz y Picasso (1881-1973) was born on this day in Malaga, Spain. Considered one of the most influential artists of the 20th century, his extraordinary output of over 20,000 works included painting, sculpture, graphic art, and ceramics. As soon as he mastered one style, he impatiently went on to the next. "If only we could pull out our brain and use only our eyes," he once said. The son of an art professor, "born with a pencil in his hand," Picasso drew powerful portraits at 14. By 19, he was an artistic success . "Painting is just another way of keeping a diary ," he said. The maverick genius condemned "art for art's sake," turned his back on a conventional career, and thumbed his nose at the artistic establishment. "Taste" to him was "the enemy of creativeness With the creation of his painting Les Demoiselles d'Avignon (1907), Picasso embarked on the creative revolution of Cubisman abstract, controversial style that completely altered the way the
