Artist
It takes a long time to become young. Pablo Picasso was born in Malaga , Spain on October 25, 1881. By the age of 15 he was already technically skilled in drawing and painting. Picasso's highly original style continuously evolved throughout his long career, expanding the definition of what art could be. In addition to painting, he would explore sculpture, ceramics and other art forms, and become one of the most influential artists of the 1900s.
Paintings from Picasso's blue period (1901-1904) depict forlorn people painted in shades of blue, evoking feelings of sadness and alienation. After his move to Paris in 1904, Picasso's rose period paintings took on a warmer more optimistic mood. In 1907 he and French painter George Braque pioneered cubism
By 1912 Picasso was incorporating newspaper print, postage stamps and other materials into his paintings. This style is called collage . By the late 1920s he turned toward a flat, cubist-related style. During the 1930s his paintings became militant and political. Guernica (1937), a masterpiece from this period depicts the terror of the bombing of the town of Guernica during the Spanish civil war.

Pablo Picasso (1881-1973)
A Spanish painter who is widely acknowledged to be the most important artist of the 20th century. He experimented with a wide range of styles and themes in his long career, most notably inspiring 'Cubism'. Pablo Ruiz was born in Malaga on 25 October 1881, the son of an art teacher. He later adopted his mother's maiden name of Picasso. He grew up in Barcelona, showing artistic talent at an early age. In the early 1900s, he moved between France and Spain before finally settling in Paris in 1904. There he experimented with a number of styles and produced his own original ones, reflected in his 'Blue' and 'Rose' periods. In 1907 Picasso painted 'Les Demoiselles d'Avignon', a revolutionary work that introduced a major new style - 'Cubism'. Picasso worked closely with the French artist Georges Braque in the development of this style. Picasso's next major innovation, in 1912, was 'Collage', attaching pieces of cloth, newspaper or advertising to his paintings.

The Spaniard pablo picasso and the Frenchman Georges Braque splintered the visual world not wantonly, but sensuously and beautifully with their new art.
http://www.ibiblio.org/wm/paint/tl/20th/cubism.html
Picasso and Cubism
The art of painting original arrangements composed of elements taken from conceived rather than perceived reality.
Guillaume Apollinaire, The Beginnings of Cubism After Cubism, the world never looked the same again: it was one of the most influential and revolutionary movements in art. The Spaniard Pablo Picasso and the Frenchman Georges Braque splintered the visual world not wantonly, but sensuously and beautifully with their new art. They provided what we could almost call a God's-eye view of reality: every aspect of the whole subject, seen simultaneously in a single dimension. The Cubist movement in painting was developed by Picasso and Braque around 1907 and became a major influence on Western art. The artists chose to break down the subjects they were painting into a number of facets, showing several different aspects of one object simultaneously. The work up to 1912 is known as Analytical Cubism, concentrating on geometrical forms using subdued colors. The second phase, known as Synthetic Cubism, used more decorative shapes, stencilling, collage, and brighter colors. It was then that artists such as Picasso and Braque started to use pieces of cut-up newspaper in their paintings. © 14 Oct 2002

Pablo Picasso: Cubism - A Revolution of Spatial Presentation in Artistic Expression (with parallels in cartography)
By Scott Crosier
Back to Classics Background
-Pablo Picasso
Cubism, the artistic expression that forefathered all abstract art, was simply a method of portraying multiple dimensions onto a two dimensional canvas. This is not unlike the task of the map maker in representing the earth in two dimensions. However, as we interact with something, we rarely interact using only one perspective. For example, as we appreciate nature, we walk around. We might see a tree off in the distance, and as we approach it, our perspective of the tree changes. We might even walk past the tree, and look back on it from a completely different view or see an areal view of the location and appreciate it from a different perspective. How, then, can an artist depict this changing interaction with the subject, while working on a flat piece of canvas? This question is what spurred several artistic innovators to the pioneer form of all abstract art called Cubism. Innovation The Cubists (including Picasso, Braque, Jean Metzinger, Gris, Duchamp, and Léger) were attempting to depict their subject matter not as the eye, but as the mind saw the subject. For example, the woman in the lower right corner of the painting has her back towards the artist. However, we know, and it is depicted in the painting, that she has a face. Also, as the veil or curtain drapes around the bodies, we see a boundry between the women and the drape, while in other places (the leg of the woman to the left) the boundry is not so clear, suggesting the flow of the veil in and around the bodies. The two women in the middle of the painting also have the profile of their noses painted on what appears to be the front of their face. This too, depicts Picasso's attempt to portray the front and the side of the face in the same image.

The Most Famous Artist of the 20th Century
Full Name: Pablo Diego José Francisco de Paula Juan Nepomuceno María de los Remedios Cipriano de la Santísima Trinidad Clito Ruiz y Picasso Born October 25, 1881 - Died April 8, 1973. “Everyone wants to understand art. Why don’t we try to understand the song of a bird? Why do we love the night, the flowers, everything around us, without trying to understand them? But in the case of a painting, people think they have to understand. If only they would realize above all that an artist works of necessity, that he himself is only an insignificant part of the world, and that no more importance should be attached to him than to plenty of other things which please us in the world though we can’t explain them; people who try to explain pictures are usually barking up the wrong tree.” - Picasso
The Beginning, Childhood and Youth: 1881-1901
Pablo Ruiz Picasso was born on October 25, 1881 to Don José Ruiz Blasco (1838-1939) and Doña Maria Picasso y Lopez (1855-1939). The family at the time resided in Málaga, Spain, where Don José, a painter himself, taught drawing at the local school of Fine Arts and Crafts. Pablo spent the first ten years of his life there. The family was far from rich, and when 2 other children were born Dolorès ("Lola") in 1884 and Concepción ("Conchita") in 1887 it was often difficult to make ends meet. When Don José was offered a better-paid job, he accepted it immediately, and the Picassos moved to the provincial capital of La Coruna, where they lived for the next four years. In 1892, Pablo entered the School of Fine Arts there, but it was mostly his father who taught him painting. By 1894 Pablo’s works were so well executed for a boy of his age that his father recognized Pablo’s amazing talent, and, handing Pablo his brush and palette, declared that he would never paint again.

This Web site is devoted to the conservation of Pablo Picasso's painting Les Demoiselles d'Avignon (1907), a pivotal work in the development of modern art and in The Museum of Modern Art's permanent collection. The conservator's decision to restore this painting was informed by archival research and technical analysis , in consultation with the Museum's curatorial staff. A thorough examination has found Les Demoiselles d'Avignon to be in stable condition. Our analysis has also revealed that the accumulation of surface dirt, discoloration of wax and varnish used in previous treatments, and mismatched restoration paint has affected the overall appearance of the painting. The restoration of Les Demoiselles d'Avignon was completed in December 2004. Progress reports, data, and photographs have been posted on this site to chart the
