The receding canyon is thought to be near where the artist stayed during his two visits to Arizona in 1901 and 1903. The sky is painted in what some call "Parrish-blue." He laid one transparent color on top of another, in a technique called glazing. Parrish is widely recognized as one of the most popular artists of the 20th century. He is primarily known as an illustrator who painted hundreds of covers for Harpers Weekly Colliers Century and Scribners magazines. He continued to paint until he was 91.
