Brooklyn, NY, USA United States of America
Maxfield Parrish, 1870-1966 presents the first critical survey of a figure who is widely considered to be one of the most beloved American artists of the twentieth century. For decades, Parrish bridged the worlds of high art and popular culture by creating an oeuvre of inventive and novel images intended to be reproduced for a mass audience. Organized chronologically, the exhibition begins with Parrish's work of the late 1890s and early 1900s, years when the young artist developed a unique aesthetic sense for book and magazine illustration as well as for poster and mural design.Ê The exhibition includes many of Parrish's iconic paintings of the 1920s, 1930s, and 1940s including the phenomenally successful fantasy Daybreak (1922) as well as later landscapes such as Moonlight Night: Winter (1942) and Arizona (1950). Featuring more than 140 paintings, drawings, prints, photographs, material artifacts, and ephemera, the exhibition takes an inclusive and critical look at Maxfield Parrish's extraordinary achievement in the context of American culture at large. Organization: The exhibition is being organized by the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts and the American Federation of Arts. The presentation at the Brooklyn Museum of Art is organized by Linda S. Ferber, the Andrew W. Mellon Curator of American Art.

Born Frederick Parrish, he took the name Maxfield from his Quaker grandmother. His father Stephen was an artist and encouraged his son from an early age and remained Maxfield's greatest influence. Maxfield started out to be an architect, but switched to studying art in 1892. He married Lydia Austin in 1895 and left for a second trip to Europe. On returning, he worked as an illustrator in inks only. Like many young artists, he struggled to make a living. (CLICK ON THE IMAGES OR LINK

On doctor's orders, he went to stay at Saranac Lake, NY, where he switched to oil painting. This was his making, as he quickly started using the brilliant colours that became his trademark. Still sick with TB, he was sent to Arizona, and completed a commission of drawings of impressive landscapes there. With another trip to Europe on commission, his career was made.
Maxfield's studio was at his house, The Oaks, in Cornish, New Hampshire, and there they entertained many guests in summer. But in frozen winter, Parrish worked steadily.

In many ways Maxfield Parrish was the antithesis of the popular image of bohemian artists, struggling for recognition and starving in noble sacrifice for their art. He was precise, orderly and methodical and was successful throughout his career. Howard Pyle at Drexel. Few can imitate his actual technique, however. Parrish would painstakingly build up his luminescent colors in layer after layer of transparent glazes. Unlike the old masters who originated this technique, Parrish used a blue and white underpainting, rather then the traditional grissaile or terra verde. If you ever get to see his originals, you wll be struck by the jewel-like quality of his colors, almost like looking through stained glass. Parrish, in fact, collaborated with the famous glass artist Louis Comfort Tiffany on glass mosaic mural called The Dream Garden , which can be seen in the Curtis Center near Independence Hall here in Philadelphia.

Biography Base Home Link To Us Search Biographies: Browse Biographies A B C D ... Z Maxfield Parrish Biography Maxfield Parrish (July 25, 1870 - March 30, 1966) was an American painter and illustrator.
"The Dinky Bird" from "Poems of Childhood", 1904Born as Frederick Parrish in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, he began drawing for his own amusement from early on and, meeting with parental encouragement, acquired an artistic education and went on to pursue a career that was to last for many decades and effectively shape the Golden Age of illustration, and the future of American visual art in general.
Launched by a commission3 to illustrate Kenneth Grahame's The Walls Were as of Jasper in 1897, his repertoire was to include many prestigious projects such as Eugene Field's Poems of Childhood (1904, see illustration) and the traditional1 Arabian Nights (1909).
In the 1920s, Parrish turned away from illustration and concentrated mainly on painting for its own sake. Androgynous nudes in fantastical settings were an often recurring theme. He continued in this venue for the rest of his life, living comfortably off the royalties brought in by the production of posters and calendars featuring his works.
Parrish was famous for the dazzlingly luminous colors that marked much of his artwork; the shade "Parrish blue" was coined in acknowledgement. He achieved this result by means of a special technique involving several coats of oil and varnish applied to his paintings.
