A breathtaking new discovery, and of major importance to the scholarship on Maxfield Parrish, will be a display of a few representative letters from a previously unknown cache of personal correspondence between the artist and a young Radcliffe scholar/researcher, of whom Parrish became quite enamoured. This valuable collection comprises approximately 300 handwritten letters by the artist covers the period from 1936 to 1941. Maxfield Parrish, Daybreak 1922, oil
In your hurry to cut out of work early before Memorial Day, fill up the cooler, and head toward sunnier climes, you might have missed the news about the rather extraordinary sale of Maxfield Parrish’s Daybreak at Christie’s Important American Paintings, Drawings, and Sculpture auction. It was a whale of a sale for a painting of any sort, but the fact that Daybreak was originally commissioned to be a template for commercial reproductions puts Parrish in an elite company of commercial artists who capture mass appeal and manage nevertheless to stake a claim in the critical and curatorial landscape. Art Daily reports: The most popular American illustrator after World War I, Parrish was commissioned to paint Daybreak by the art publishing firm, House of Art, in August 1920. The painting was his first work commissioned solely for the purpose of reproduction as a color lithographic print to be distributed to the American public—and it became one of the most reproduced paintings in American history. At the height of its popularity, it was estimated one of every four households had a copy, making it a national sensation and cultural phenomenon. In his own time, Parrish was not considered to be a fine or high artist; critical and curatorial interest in his work surfaced long after the fact. As you sometimes find with commercial design, a secondary fascination emerges later on independent of the product itself—consider collectors of album cover art or pulp-fiction covers. Those kinds of illustration (and others that immediately come to mind) are sold and traded as kitsch.

Illustration: Maxfield Parrish's Arabian Nights 1909
This post is just the tip of the iceberg... see The Top Ten Reasons To Support The A-HAA for more jaw dropping images from classic illustrated books.
I recently posted on Lotte Reiniger's Prince Achmed ( Part One Part Two ), and I thought it might be interesting to see a different approach to the same subject... this time by illustrator Maxfield Parrish
Parrish was one of the most successful artists of the golden age of illustration. It is said that during the depression, there were more Maxfield Parrish prints hanging on the walls of American homes than there were American homes!
The book I'm featuring today was done early in Parrish's career, but it contains all of the aspects of his style that would make him famous... the electric blues set off of bright sunset oranges, the dramatic lighting effects, the amazingly lifelike natural shapes and patterns contrasted with large flat areas of color, and the total control of the mechanical aspects of offset printing... if you look carefully at the foliage in the image with the urns on either side, you can see that the painting was pasted up from several pieces. Bud Plant's website has an interesting article on how Parrish used the four color process. Check it out.

Maxfield Parrish: An Appreciation
Maxfield Parrish had studied at Haverford College and the Philadelphia College of Art prior to his invitation by Howard Pyle to study with him. Parrish arrived already a competent illustrator with a substantial body of work and accomplishment. Among members of this freshman class were the very gifted Violet Oakley, Jessie Wilcox Smith and Elizabeth Shippen Green. Henry C. Pitz, in his excellent book, The Brandywine Tradition isn’t clear about the dates involved but I would venture to guess the time as to be somewhere in the years from 1896 to 1899. See Howard Pyle: An Appreciation . Click on images to enlarge. “Through the night she calls to men, luring them down to their death,” is the illustration for Phoebus on Halzaphron which appeared in Scribner’s Monthly Magazine for August 1901. The influence of Howard Pyle is obvious in the gesture, sky, sea, and voluminous folds of her flowing garment.

Maxfield Parrish
Maxfield Parrish (1870-1966) has been called the common man’s Rembrandt. He was one of America's most beloved artists working during the "Golden Age of American Illustration." He achieved incredible artistic renown and critical acclaim during his lifetime and has continued to interest new audiences ever since. His prolific body of work has been reproduced in books, calendars, art prints, advertisements, and magazines for generations. His paintings and murals always utilized a unique juxtaposition of designed elements, luminescent colors, photorealistic subjects and romantic images which combined to captivate his viewers. Maxfield Parrish so dominated the images America loved that in the 1920's one out of four homes had his world of make-believe hanging on their walls. In a survey taken in 1925, van Gogh, Cezanne and Parrish were thought to be the three greatest artists of all time. Consequently, Maxfield Parrish was the single most popular American artist of the early decades of the 20th century. The continuing demand for his art prints today indicates America's fondness for his fantasy images. After a brief and belabored period of studying architecture at Haverford College, Parrish dropped out to study painting full time. Soon, he had painted his first serious work, 'Moonrise', while he was living with his father at a Gloucester, Massachusetts artist colony. Simultaneously he enrolled at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Art. While at the Academy, Parrish became familiar with the work of Howard Pyle and audited Pyle's first classes in illustration at Drexel Institute. Parrish quickly realized that the use of historic subject matter captured the sentiments of the print audience, and he decided upon his career choice. There was a great demand for talented illustrators as magazines proliferated.
