About Maxfield Parrish
During the Golden Age of Illustration, Maxfield Parrish's "beautiful settings and charming figures" enchanted the American public. His work includes immense murals in office buildings and hotels, magazine covers, and advertisements as well as his book illustrations. Many of his illustrations to children's books, still popular today, are the result of his struggle to make a living as an artist in his early years around the turn of the 20th century.

Biography:

Maxfield Parrish studied at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts under Howard Pyle, famous author and illustrator. After Parrish designed the cover of Harper’s Weekly in 1895, his career expanded and he began receiving commissions for posters, illustrations, and advertisements. His fame reached its height when he began producing color prints for the mass market. Works such as Garden of Allah and Dawn sold millions of copies because of the appealing romantic yet classical style. After this style became unfashionable in the 1930’s, Parrish took up landscape painting.

First Annual Collection This one image in Coy Ludwig's indispensable 1973 book, Maxfield Parrish , told me a great deal about Parrish. I'll explain why it is so fascinating in a moment. Frederick Parrish (he would adopt the name Maxfield later) was born in Philadelphia in 1870 - of the generation of Orson Lowell , C.D. Gibson, Elizabeth Shippen Green , W.T. Benda, Franklin Booth Howard Chandler Christy and F.R. Gruger. That made him almost 14 when he decorated the letter below - so take heart all you young doodlers. He illuminated many such letters that he wrote from London and Paris during 1884-86. John Goodspeed Stuart has collected many of them in his fascinating book, Young Maxfield Parrish (1992). As much as the letters show the pure "boy" in Parrish (don't you just love the weeping eyeball and "DUDE"?), other images from the book show a precocious talent for design and rendering. The piston at left is from the same time period, if not slightly earlier. His artistic talents were encouraged by his parents and though it was initially architecture that beckoned him, it was quite obvious that he would be an artist. His college work was remarkably sophisticated. In 1893 he approached

The Parrish House is known around the country as a premier gallery specializing in Parrish art. Androgynous nudes in fantastical settings were an often-recurring theme. He continued in this venue for the rest of his life, living comfortably off the royalties brought in by the production of posters and calendars featuring his works. Parrish continued painting until he was about 90 years old and died at age 96. Each new generation seems to rediscover the magic and romance of Parrish art and some of his prints now command prices that reach into many thousands of dollars. Fortunately, many images may still be obtained at modest cost. Daybreak, 1922

MAXFIELD PARRISH (1870-1966) was a unique figure in American art, not belonging to any school, part traditionalist, part inventor, sometime illustrator of gnomes and dragons, other times finding inspiration in the oak trees of his New Hampshire environs.
A meticulous craftsman, Parrish's idiosyncratic painting method involved applying numerous layers of thin, transparent oil, alternating with varnish over stretched paper, yielding a combination of great luminosity and extraordinary detail. In his hands, this method gives the effect of a glimpse through a window....except that the scene viewed is from the fairy tale world.
In spite of the long time it took to perfect a painting, Parrish was prolific over the course of his productive years, from his children's books of the turn of the century, to his famous prints of androgynous, lounging nudes during the 1920s, to his calendar landscapes of the 1930s through the 1960s.

    Maxfield Parrish (1870-1966)
Maxfield Parrish was one of the greatest painters of the 20th century, which particularly in the era when he did most of his work was quite hostile to realism, clarity, and the technical mastery that is his hallmark. Fortunately there are a lot of good sources of information about him, the best of which is definitely Alma Gilbert's Maxfield Parrish Masterworks (the second edition of which has an appendix with several previously unavailable works). Pomegranate Artbooks also (Box 6099, Rohnert Park, California 94927) publishes a book of postcards of Parrish's paintings as well as cards, calendars, and other such things featuring works by Parrish and other great artists.
