    Reconstructing The Orozco Murals
Among the great works of Mexican artist Jose Clemente Orozco (1883-1949) are the powerful murals at Dartmouth College, Pomona College, and New School University. Beginning with a collection of photographs we have created a single distortion-free image mosaic of these murals. Combining these mosaics with a 3-D computer model, allows users an immersive, albeit virtual, experience of these beautiful works of art.

    The Epic of American Civilization
From 1932 to 1934, Orozco was artist-in-residence at Dartmouth College in Hanover, New Hampshire, where he had been commissioned to paint a mural in the Reserve Reading Room of Baker Library. The impressive 150-foot mural, The Epic of American Civilization, remains Orozco's unique legacy to the college. The mural represents Orozco's conception of a history of the development of the New World and the impact of the intertwined currents of indigenous and European experience on the continent. The two halves of the mural, devoted to pre-Columbian America and to post-Cortez America, highlight the duality of the "American" experience, a duality in which Orozco portrays humanity as it struggles toward greatness yet stumbles in the face of shared human frailties. The following images represent 14 of the major panels of The Epic of American Civilization. For various interpretations of the mural, please consult the materials on reserve at Baker Library. Orozco's murals can also be seen in Mexico City, Orizaba, Guadalajara, and Jiquilpan, Mexico, and in New York City and Claremont, California. José Clemente Orozco and Diego Rivera: The Murals
Hayden Herrera T he art and attitudes of the two great Mexican muralists, Diego Rivera and José Clemente Orozco could not be more different. Rivera was a classicist, Orozco an expressionist. Rivera was optimistic, Orozco was a pessimist. Rivera was an indigenista who idealized the Indian segment of Mexican society and glorified pre-hispanic culture. Orozco was a hispanista through form and through Legend has it that when in 1934 Orozco finished his fresco Catharsis Self-Portrait The Making of a Fresco at the San Francisco Art Institute, where he demonstrates his idea of the artist as a laborer by picturing himself on a scaffold, a worker among workers. His presentation to the viewer of his fat back side was felt to be a premeditated insult in some San Francisco circles, and when Orozco saw the picture he voiced his disapproval. In 1940 Rivera made a double appearance in his Pan American Unity Self-Portrait from 1949 shows the painter as an intellectual, a man of self-doubt, and of passionate morality. His blazing eyes bore into the viewer. They contain all the anger and tenderness with which he observed the sufferings and foibles of the Mexican people.

Prometheus was well-received at the time, and the skill with which Orozco had scaled the composition to its architectural environment was particularly applauded. In a Time magazine interview in 1930, architect Spalding was asked how he liked the mural; he responded: "I feel as though the building would fall down if the fresco were removed." Like many of history's greatest artists, Orozco did not paint primarily to provide aesthetic pleasure. He had something to sayin this case, a passionate statement about heroism and enlightenmentand the harsh and vigorous style he employed was deliberate, an expression of the fervor of his convictions and of his passion to communicate them.

Rivera he led the renaissance of modern Mexican art. Orozco's work is bold in execution, often brilliant in color, and deals compassionately with social themes, especially human versus machine. From 1917 to 1919 and from 1927 to 1934, Orozco was in the United States. Much of his work is true fresco painting, executed directly on wet plaster, such as his 1930 mural Mankind's Struggle at New School Univ., New York City. His work in the United States also includes
