Violet Oakley, an important American muralist, was born in Bergen Heights in 1874. She trained at the Arts Students League, the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts and the Academie Montparnasse in Paris.
Oakley created oil paintings, illustrations, stained glass windows and murals. The “Unity” frieze expresses her vision of a peaceful world. This mural was one of many commissioned for the Pennsylvania State Capitol building. At the time, it was the largest mural commission ever awarded to a woman. Oakley was one of three women to receive the Gold Medal Award for distinguished service from the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts. She received many commissions, including painting the first delegates of the League of Nations and the United Nations. Her illustrated books focus on the themes of world peace, disarmament and human rights. She was a pacifist and feminist.

Senate of Pennsylvania "The Senate will consider itself, and will be considered by the people, as the balence wheel in the great machine of government, calculated and designed to retard its movements, when they shall be too rapid, and to accelerate them, when they shall be too slow," said its principal founder, James Wilson of Carlisle, in 1790 after having been appointed by President Washington to the first United States Supreme Court. Two panels from Violet Oakley's paintings, "The Creation and Preservation of the Union." The left panel represents Washington presiding over the Constitutional Convention in Philadelphia in May 1787. The right panel shows Lincoln at Gettysburg in November 1863. Oakley is one of the first women in the history of American art to have been commissioned for the mural decoration of a major public building. Oakley was commissioned to paint the Senate Chamber as well as the Supreme Court Chamber and the Governor's Reception Room. The Pennsylvania Senate, founded in 1791, remains as one of the vital components of Pennsylvania self-government. Of the Senate's relationship with the larger House of Representatives, Wilson predicted: "They will be rivals in duty, rivals in fame, rivals for the good graces of their common constituents."

    Biographical Note
American artist Howard Pyle (1853-1911), who founded the Brandywine School of Art, was one of the pre-eminent illustrators of his time. He also maintained a successful painting and teaching career. Pyle taught at Drexel Institute in Philadelphia, at the Art Institute in Chicago, and at the Art Student League in New York. In 1898 with financial backing from Drexel Institute, Pyle founded a summer art school at Chadds Ford, Pennsylvania; the summer school proved successful and continued until 1903. In 1900 Pyle resigned his position at Drexel and founded the Howard Pyle School of Art in Wilmington. After his death many of his students worked tirelessly to collect much of his work into a repository, which ultimately became the Delaware Art Museum in Wilmington, Delaware. Pyle's students were some of the most renowned American artists of the golden age of American illustration. Stanley Arthurs, Elizabeth Shippen Green Elliott, Gayle Hoskins, William H.D. Koerner, Thornton Oakley, Violet Oakley, Katharine Pyle, N. C. Wyeth, Maxfield Parrish, Henry J. Peck, Frank Schoonover, and Jessie Wilcox Smith were among the cadre of his famous students who created images that became part of the popular culture of the early twentieth century.

    VIOLET
common name for some members of the Violaceae, a family of chiefly perennial herbs (and sometimes shrubs, small trees, or climbers) found on all continents. Violets, including the genus Viola and similar related species, are popular as florists', garden, and wildflowers. Of this large group, with its fragrant blossoms ranging from deep purple to yellow or white, over 60 species are native to the United States and well over 100 varieties are offered in trade as ornamentals. Florists' violets are usually the sweet, or English, violet ( V. odorata ). Garden violets (often called violas) are generally hybrids and may be purple, blue, rose, yellow, white, or combinations of these, sometimes with double flowers. It became the flower of Athens; followers of Napoleon, who promised to return from Elba with violets in the spring, used the blossom as a badge; and in the United States a violet is the floral emblem of three states (New Jersey, Rhode Island, and Wisconsin). The flavors of various species, particularly the sweet violet, have been used for perfume, dye, and medicine and have been candied. The common pansy was originally derived, long ago, from the Old World V. tricolor

    Violet Oakley (1874-1961)
VIOLET OAKLEY Violet Oakley was born into a family of artistic tradition. Oakley's formal artistic education was rather sporadic. Although she studied at the Arts Student League in Philadelphia, the PA Academy of Fine Arts, and at various institutions abroad during summer trips, the bulk of her training came from copying works of the old masters on her own. The year 1896 was a landmark in Oakley's early career. Her family moved to Philadelphia, where she soon entered Howard Pyle's illustration class at Drexel Institute. She flourished under Pyle's tutelage and soon became one of America's most popular illustrators, designing covers for Century Magazine, Collier's Illustrated Weekly, Everybody's Magazine, St. Nicholas, and Woman's Home Companion. At the same time, she also gained a reputation as a talented designer of stained glass. LINCOLN AT GETTYSBURG In 1902 Pennsylvania Capitol architect Joseph Huston asked Oakley to paint 13 murals for the Governor's Reception Room. Huston believed that choosing Oakley would "act as an encouragement of women and the State." In fact, the Capitol project signified a milestone in the history of American art, for it was the largest public commission given to a woman in the country up to that time. In addition, it allowed Oakley to transcend the conventional roles of women painters as either portrait or genre painters, and to pursue a successful career in the prestigious, but overwhelmingly masculine, field of mural decoration.

Her father, Joseph Wharton (1826-1909), was a wealthy industrialist. He married Anna Corbit Lovering (1830-1914) in 1854 at the Cherry Street Meeting House in Philadelphia. Two children preceeded Anna: Joanna (1858-1938), who married Joshua Bertram Lippincott in 1885, and Mary Lovering (1862-1923), who never married. The Whartons moved to Ontalauna near Old York Road, Philadelphia, in 1881. Their summer residence, Marbella, was at Conanicut, west of Newport, Rhode Island. Anna was educated at Mrs. Head's School in Germantown and took private lessons in French and music. In June of 1896, Anna Wharton married Harrison Smith Morris, son of George Washington Morris and his wife, Catharine (Harris) Morris. Even though Morris was not a Friend, Green Street Monthly Meeting gave permission for the marriage to proceed under the care of the Meeting. The service took place at her father's house in the Quaker manner with over 140 witnesses. Anna Wharton Morris remained a member of Green Street Monthly Meeting and was active in the Society of Friends throughout her life.
