Georgia O'Keeffe was born on November 18, 1887 outside of Sun Prairie, WI. By the time she was in the eight grade, Georgia was announcing that she was going to be an artist when she grew up. She didn't know where she got the idea, but she was determined to follow it. In 1903 her family relocated to Virginia. Georgia continued to take private art lessons which she had begun in Wisconsin. Education for women was strongly encouraged in her family, and she received full support in her artistic studies. Upon graduation from high school, Georgia attended the Art Institute of Chicago. The following year, she acquired typhoid fever, and after overcoming it, she enrolled at the Art Student League in New York City during 1907. While at the League, she became discouraged with her work. Another student predicted that Georgia would eventually end up as a painting instructor at a girls' school. When classes started back up in the fall of 1908, Georgia decided not to return, and instead took a position as a commercial artist in Chicago for a year. The year would pass, and Georgia wouldn't paint. It wasn't until she moved back to to join her family in Williamsburg, Virginia that she would again pick up a brush, after enrolling in a nearby college. Georgia applied for a position as a drawing supervisor in Amarillo, TX in 1912, and was hired for the fall semester. During the summer months, she would travel back to Virginia to teach at the University of Virginia. Georgia stayed in Texas until 1914, when she resigned and moved to New York City to attend Columbia Teachers College. She eventually accepting a teaching position in South Carolina at Columbia College. Her schedule was gave her all of Monday, and every afternoon after three free. She use this to to paint, using her own ideas and drawing things that she felt she must express.

  • Georgia O'Keeffe, born in Sun Prairie, Wisconsin, was a painter known for her unique, individualistic style. Her work is sensual evoking the sense of the subject of the painting and somehow both realistic and abstract. Georgia O'Keeffe painted both New England including New York and the Southwest. Her paintings of flowers and bones are perhaps the most recognizable of her images. Selected Georgia O'Keeffe Quotations • I have had to go to men as sources in my painting because the past has left us so small an inheritance of woman's painting that had widened life.... Before I put a brush to canvas I question, "Is this mine? Is it all intrinsically of myself? Is it influenced by some idea or some photograph of an idea which I have acquired from some man?"

Georgia O'Keeffe was born on a farm in Sun Prairie, Wisconsin. She knew from the time she was a young girl she wanted to be an artist. Her parents encouraged her interest and gave her lessons. She was one of seven children in the family, and the education of their children was important to her parents. Her mother had been educated in the East.
The family moved to Virginia, and Georgia took private art lessons for several years. When she was eighteen years old she went to live with her aunt and attended the Art Institute of Chicago. Next she returned to her family in Virginia.
She worked for a while as a commercial artist, then a friend told her about a job in Amarillo, Texas which she accepted, and she became an art supervisor in the public schools. She worked there for two years and in the summers taught art at the University of Virginia.
Her friend, Anita Pollitzer sent some of her charcoal drawings to a photographer, Alfred Stieglitz, who had a gallery called the 291 Gallery in New York. Stieglitz was impressed with her work, and without her knowledge exhibited ten of the drawings. She was quite upset when she found out he had exhibited them with asking for her permission to do so. She went to talk to him and agreed to give him permission. This visit also began a relationship which would later result in their marriage.
Georgia O'Keeffe is famous for her paintings of flowers. She made them very large so they filled the whole canvas. She painted many kinds of flowers. You may have seen her pictures of

Georgia O'Keeffe rarely signed a painting, but instead would sometimes print an "OK" on the back of the canvas.

Georgia O' Keeffe Georgia O' Keeffe was a famous artist. Georgia was born on November 15, 1887 in a farmhouse in Sun Prairie on a dairy. When Georgia was young she wanted to be an artist. When Georgia was alive (in the 1900's) very few women were professional artists. In 1902, her parents moved to Virginia and in 1903, Georgia and her sisters and brothers went to Virginia. At the age of 16 Georgia had private art lessons. Georgia went to New York to study art. She did very well when she studied. She got her diploma in 1905. In 1907 she got a letter to come to New York. Her dad could not pay anymore for her classes in art so she had to go to Chicago to be a commercial artist and live with her aunt in 1908. In Chicago she did not have time to paint there, so she was angry. She got ill in Chicago, so she went back to live with her family in 1909. When she was home she had time to paint again. One day, Georgia got a letter saying that she could teach painting in Amarillo. Georgia had a friend named Anna Pollitzer. In 1916 Georgia sent a few drawing to Anna and told not to show anyone. Her friend thought the pictures were so good that she took them to a famous photographer. He liked them a lot so he hung them in his gallery. It was difficult for Georgia to work in a man's dominated world. In 1917 she got ill and gave up her job teaching. An artist named Stieglitz asked Georgia to marry him and she decided to. Georgia O'Keefe became well known for large paintings of flowers and the desert. Until she died at the age of 98, she was still painting.

A glimpse into the student days and formative experiences that would make O'Keeffe an artistic icon.
    Most people tend to remember
    Chicago and New York
O'Keefe was popular at the League. Nicknamed "Patsy", she was regarded as pretty and charming. Many other students wanted to paint her portrait, although some of her male admirers like artist Eugene Speicher were a bit pompous about how they would surely become famous while she would just end up teaching “in some girls’ school” for the rest of her life.
    Teaching and Learning
Dow stressed pattern and balance in art education, as opposed to strict realism. This approach gave O'Keeffe a second wind, and shortly after she accepted a position with the Amarillo school system. O'Keeffe had been fascinated by the Western adventure stories that her mother had read to her as a child, and in 1912 she headed with enthusiasm for the Texas Panhandle.

    Georgia O’Keeffe: Nature and Abstraction
Nature and Abstraction is a survey of the extraordinary career of the legendary American artist Georgia O’Keeffe.  The exhibition comprises some 30 works ranging from 1918 to 1977 and deals with the central concern of her work – the transformation of nature into abstraction. It includes examples of all her main areas of interest, landscape paintings, flower studies and abstract works. Over the course of seven decades, O’Keeffe became a major figure in American art, renowned not only for the stylized beauty of her work, but also for steadfastly remaining true to her own unique vision, amid the many shifting trends of her time. O’Keeffe’s work focuses on representing an object’s essence through form, colour and allusion. Her images range from clear representation to purely abstract shapes with colours that are more conceptual than naturalistic, adding to a heightened sensation of clarity. O’Keeffe manages to imbue her work with an eroticism and mysticism while maintaining a careful restraint.
The exhibition is presented in association with THE IRISH TIMES Georgia O’Keeffe is co-organised by the Irish Museum of Modern Art and the Vancouver Art Gallery and curated by Richard D Marshall, independent curator, consultant, art historian and curator of the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York, from 1975 to 1993.  The exhibition will travel to the Vancouver Art Gallery, Canada, from 6 October 2007 to 13 January 2008.
