Pre-War American Painting
There have always been interesting American artists, and at least two 19th-century painters, Thomas Eakins and Winslow Homer, influenced the course of future art in the United States. During the 1920s and '30s, Edward Hopper and Georgia O'Keeffe emerged as the inspirational new painters of distinctive American traditions. Hopper's work was strongly realist, his still, precise images of desolation and isolated individuals reflecting the social mood of the times. O'Keeffe's art was more abstract, often based on enlarged plants and flowers, and infused with a kind of Surrealism she referred to as ``magical realism''. She may not have been a great painter, but her art was highly influential. © 14 Oct 2002, Nicolas Pioch Top Up Info

Oriental Poppies, oil on canvas 30 x 40 1/8 in. WAM About the Art Georgia O'Keeffe's paintings of flowers are among her most famous. Many critics and scholars have talked about themes in O'Keeffe's work such as the cycles of birth, life, death and decay. Others saw the flowers as symbols of sexuality. Still others observed that she was incorporating photographic techniques such as cropping O'Keeffe was interested in European-based modern art, but she felt she could only go so far painting like her teachers and other artists. Around 1915, she read an important book by the Russian modern painter Wassily Kandinsky, titled Concerning the Spiritual in Art, which strengthened her desire to make something that was profoundly personal. O'Keeffe's style of painting was first and foremost her own personal vision. Vocabulary Terms abstract Art that looks as if it contains little or no recognizable or realistic forms from the physical world. Focus on formal elements such as colors, lines, or shapes. Artists often "abstract" objects by changing, simplifying, or exaggerating what they see.

With a unique, innovative and original style, Georgia O'Keeffe stamped her independent mark on 20th century art and culture. Born into a Wisconsin farming family, which supported and appreciated individuality, Georgia knew her destiny as a teenager. "After we are through school," she told her classmates, "I am going to give up everything for my art. I am going to live a different kind of life from the rest of you girls." This collection is from a series of flower paintings in the 20s and 30s. (CLICK ON THE IMAGES OR LINK

Enter O'Keeffe's uniquely beautiful world through this intimate look at one of the most original American artists of the 20th century. This stunning exhibition features 42 extraordinary works, including paintings, watercolors, and sculpture. It will inspire you to see O'Keeffe in a new way - as a pioneer of modernism with a unique ability to interpret nature, perfecting a language that remained utterly her own. Click here to listen to curator Sue Canterbury talk about the exhibition.
From her earliest mature works to her final paintings - over the course of a career spanning more than seven decades - Georgia O'Keeffe consistently incorporated circular forms into her compositions. Her use of this motif stands in contrast to strategies of abstraction adopted by many of her peers, which tended to be Cubist-based, using straight lines and angles rather than curves and circles. Using the circle and its kin - the ellipse, the oval, and the arcing line - O'Keeffe explored the shifting terrain between abstraction and representation, sometimes calling upon such forms to represent a mood, a reaction to a sensation, or the spiritual essence of a subject, while at other times using them to encourage her viewers to see new relationships between familiar objects. Despite O'Keeffe's broad popularity and the numerous exhibitions devoted to her work both during her lifetime and posthumously, this exhibition is the first devoted to this aspect of her work, and promises to make an important addition to scholarship on both O'Keeffe and twentieth-century American art.

Wadsworth Atheneum Hartford, CT http://www.wadsworthatheneum.org T he creative legacy of two giants of 20th century American art will be explored through photographs and paintings in at the Wadsworth Atheneum, April 16 - July 11, 1999. Right: Alfred Stieglitz, The Steerage, 1907, The Alfred Stieglitz Collection, gift of Miss Georgia O'Keeffe, Museum of Fine Arts, Boston; Left: Right: Alfred Stieglitz, Georgia O'Keeffe, A Portrait, 1918, The Alfred Stieglitz Collection, gift of Alfred Stieglitz, Museum of Fine Arts, Boston; Lower Right: Alfred Stieglitz, Georgia O'Keeffe, A Portrait With 112 photographs and photogravures from the Alfred Stieglitz Collection of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, this is the first major photography show to be presented by the Wadsworth Atheneum since the Robert Mapplethorpe exhibition of 1989. According to curator Elizabeth Mankin Kornhauser, "The Wadsworth Atheneum's distinguished history of presenting photography exhibitions began in the 1930s with shows devoted to George Platt Lynes [1931] and Man Ray [1934]. The current show focuses on Alfred Stieglitz as one of America's most important modernist photographers, and explores the considerable influence his work had on the American modernists he so passionately supported, exhibited, and promoted at his New York gallery,'291'. It also emphasizes the visual exchange that took place between photography and painting," she continued. In part a chronicle of Stieglitz's artistic evolution over his 50-year career

Santa Fe, NM, USA
Drawing on new scholarship and including many rarely seen works from private collections, O'Keeffe on Paper presents 52 stunning watercolors, pastels and charcoals by Georgia O'Keeffe (1887-1986). The exhibition offers fresh insights into this distinctive and little-known aspect of the artist's oeuvre. It is on view at the Georgia O'Keeffe Museum, Santa Fe, New Mexico, July 29 through October 29, 2000. The exhibition is organized by the Georgia O'Keeffe Museum, Santa Fe, and the National Gallery of Art, Washington DC. It is made possible by The Burnett Foundation, the Henry Luce Foundation, The Georgia O'Keeffe Foundation and the National Advisory Council of the Georgia O'Keeffe Museum. The exhibition celebrates the publication of the two-volume O'Keeffe catalogue raisonné, a major scholarly project of the National Gallery of Art in partnership with The Georgia O'Keeffe Foundation. We are delighted to collaborate with the National Gallery in presenting this exceptional exhibition, honoring the publication of the catalogue raisonné and bringing before the public works of such significance, said George G. King, director, Georgia O'Keeffe Museum. He noted that the O'Keeffe Museum celebrates its third anniversary in July as well.
