September 23, 2005 - December 31, 2005 Spanning 300 years of artistic development, To Observe and Imagine: British Drawings and Watercolors from the Morgan Library, 1600–1900 , opens at The Frick Art Museum on September 23, 2005. This exhibition is the Morgan Library’s first traveling survey of its extensive holdings of British works on paper. Exquisite draftsmanship, picturesque views, fascinating faces, and unsurpassed watercolor technique highlight this selection of 102 master drawings and watercolors from the Morgan’s important collection of British art, originally assembled by one of Henry Clay Frick’s business associates and peers, Pierpont Morgan (1837–1913). Many of the leading British figures in the history of art are represented in the exhibition, including Thomas Gainsborough (1727–1788), William Blake (1757–1827), Joseph Mallord William Turner (1775–1851), John Constable (1776–1837), Dante Gabriel Rossetti (1828–1882), and Sir Edward Coley Burne-Jones (1833–1898). Their drawings and watercolors span a range of artistic modes and genres, including landscapes, portraits, scenes of urban life, architectural renderings, figure and nature studies, illustrations, and still lifes. Some of the works were inspired by imagination, while others were rooted in careful observation and interpretation of the natural and man-made world.

    http://www.marindirect.com/fxhistory/history.html
T he area now called Fairfax was originally part of the Mexican Land Grant, Canada de Herrera, consisting of 6,658 acres, conferred to Domingo Sais on August 10, 1839, in return for his military service under the government of Mexico.
One of the first Europeans to settle in the area was a Virginian, Dr. Alfred W. Taliaferro, Marin's first and most beloved physician, who was given the park-like glen, the Marin Town and Country Club property, by Domingo Sais. A fellow Virginian, Charles S. Fairfax, also fell in love with the property when he paid the good doctor a visit. Taliaferro transferred the property to Fairfax and in 1855 Fairfax and his wife, Ada, made it their home. T he town of Fairfax derives its name from A man of honor, fiercely patriotic, never coveting his noble title, Charles Fairfax died in 1869 after traveling east as a delegate to the National Democratic Convention, at the home of his mother. After his death, his widow sold the property to Mary Owens and moved to Fort Ross.

    Provenance
[1] According to evidence collected by the Duveen Brothers (see prospectus in NGA curatorial files and also the statement published in Duveen Pictures in Public Collections of America , New York, 1941: no. 55), the portrait was "said traditionally to be a member of the Del Nero family" and came from the collection of Baron Cerbone Del Nero. So far no supporting evidence has emerged to confirm this tradition, which was probably passed on to Duveen Brothers by the Torrigiani family; nonetheless, at least as far as the provenance is concerned, this appears plausible. In any case, the Galleria Torrigiani (see below), where the painting is recorded for the first time by the mid-nineteenth century (see Otto Mündler, "The Travel Diaries of Otto Mündler, 1855-1858," ed. Carol Togneri Dowd, in Walpole Society 51 [1985]: 132), was in the palace originally belonging to the Del Nero family. Old guides to Florence do not mention a Palazzo Torrigiani or family collections. Palazzo del Nero, instead, built around the middle of the sixteenth century on Baccio d'Agnolo's design, is listed as early as 1591 by Francesco Bocchi (

    Abstract:
Normally art museums collect art! Nevertheless, in 1899 the New York Public Library became the second library in the United States, only after the Library of Congress, to establish a whole administrative division with a curatorthe first curator was Frank Weitenkampf to acquire, manage, display and interpret art, in particular prints. My almost complete manuscript explains the history of this pioneering effort including important events, biography, philosophy, theory and practice in the New York Pubic Library. This grant will fund the acquisition of illustrations and purchase of a laptop computer to help finalize the manuscript.

    Fairfax Water Doubles Manager's Pension
    Policy Change Also Benefits Successor
By Lisa Rein Washington Post Staff Writer Wednesday, September 28, 2005; Page B06 The retiring chief of the Fairfax County Water Authority will receive almost twice the pension he would have been entitled to, thanks to a new policy that also guarantees his successor a similarly generous retirement package. The unprecedented bonuses were approved Sept. 15 on a 7 to 3 vote by the board of Virginia's largest water utility, which serves 1.3 million residents in Fairfax and parts of Loudoun and Prince William counties. Opponents said they disapprove of spending public money to sweeten benefits for top managers for doing their jobs.
