"The Rescue" BIOGRAPHY
Munger Theatre exterior
At age sixteen, Gilbert enrolled in the Saint Jean Port Jolie Art School located in a town of the same name where many residents made their living making sculptures. The town was previously known for its shipbuilding trade which all but disappeared many years before the school was formed. Gilbert attended this school for three years studying drawing and learning a traditional form of carving. The central focus of art taught at the school was sculpture of all sizes from small pieces to those of monumental scale. Wood was the main media used, but metal, stone and bronze casting was also incorporated into the curriculum. Gilbert credits what he learned here as providing the lifelong skills that he would apply to several occupations. SBMM Entrance Doors Gilbert returned to school to major in film making at the University of Quebec, in Montreal. After he graduated, he satisfied his desire to travel by coming to the United States, eventually ending up in Los Angeles, designing and building movie sets for the motion picture industry. He was introduced to beautiful Santa Barbara by a friend at a time when he was ready to get back to his purely artistic endeavors. He resolved to make a living in Santa Barbara by returning to creating sculptures. He also worked as a finish carpenter on special projects for contractors and homeowners.

Gilbert Munger: Quest for Distinction
Sep 7th, 2004
NEW LONDON, CONN.
:Lyman Allyn Art Museum will open a new exhibition, "Gilbert Munger: Quest for Distinction," on Friday, September 24. This traveling exhibition, organized by the Tweed Museum of Art in Duluth, Minn., showcases the work of lesser-known Hudson River School artist Gilbert Munger. Born in 1837 in Madison, Conn., Munger was an artist, as well as an explorer who met with success painting the dramatic landscapes of the American West and Europe. Munger was the ultimate self-made man, becoming quite skilled at self-promotion as he forged his own path into the "high society" of late Nineteenth Century artists, collectors, critics and scientists. Between 1869 and 1877, Munger established a solid reputation in New York, St Paul and San Francisco as a skilled painter of landscapes that were both scientifically accurate and aesthetically pleasing. On the advice of English patrons, he relocated to London, where his fame grew. Painting in France in the mid-1880s, Munger successfully negotiated a stylistic transformation, from the distant and detached views of the Hudson River School to the intimate, moody and emotional style advocated by artists of the Barbizon School. The paintings Munger created in the last decade of his life, after he returned to America, clearly demonstrated his success at absorbing, mastering and often surpassing the stylistic conventions of his day.

140 color and b/w illustrations Arnold Friberg made cultural heroes of the North West Mounted Police
for one of the longest-running campaigns in American advertising history.
THE MOUNTIE WORE HIS HEART (and ours) on his bright red sleeve; he stood for integrity, bravery, and a whole range of Victorian virtues that had been banished from the abstract art of the modern, 20th century. The big calendars that carried these images were Northwest Paper Company’s pride and joy. To promote high-quality paper to the printing trade, it was crucial to show how well it reproduced the intended colors—how well it “printed.” Chicago ad man Frank Cash had the answer: The red Mountie tunic and the vivid hues of the outdoor landscapes would test the printing qualities of Northwest paper to its limits. The heroic male figure would appeal to the jobbers and printers; theirs was, in the 1930s, strictly a man’s world. LOOKING NORTH features 140 color illustrations by Arnold Friberg, Hal Foster, and 13 other artists who created these stunning story-ads for the Northwest Paper Company in Cloquet, Minnesota, between 1931 and 1970.

Add to del.icio.us RSS In mid-November 1872, during intensely cold snowstorms at the summit of the Sierra Nevada near Donner Pass, an aspiring landscape painter from Connecticut sketched alongside one of the nation's most illustrious artists. "I am now sketching this place with [Albert] Bierstadt [1830-1902]," wrote Gilbert Munger. "We work from sunrise to sunset, muffled up to our eyebrows in furs....We are sketching in the snow, sketching snow-storms and snow effects....I am now familiar with the scenery and know where all the best things are." (1) He went on to relate that Bierstadt "wishes me to accompany him on his sketching tours," but while they stayed in contact over the next five years, (2) Munger and Bierstadt apparently did not sketch together again. While today we know much about Bierstadt, Munger's name and artistic achievements had been generally forgotten until recently. In his day he was a highly regarded painter in New York, San Francisco, and London. He socialized with leading scientists and artists. But like many artists of his generation he went largely unnoticed in the twentieth century. His rediscovery by scholars and collectors is a story in which the Internet has played an important part.
