in partnership with FEW ARTISTS SEEM TO PRESENT their public with as complete a homology between their lives and their art as Edvard Munch (1863-1944). By representing himself, his family, and his friends as the protagonists of moving visual dramas, Munch, more than virtually any artist of the turn of the century, suggests the eradication of the boundary between private experience and public image through his art.

Oscar-winning director Peter Watkins' powerful masterpiece exploring the intertwined life and art of the celebrated painter of "The Scream", returns in a restored new 35 mm print. "As powerful, thoughtful and revelatory as anything you'll see this year, "Edvard Munch" stands as one of a tiny number of films about artists that are themselves masterpieces" (Jason Anderson, Toronto Eye).
Watkins and his castimprovising from the details of Munch's life created an almost overwhelming portrait of not just Munch's life, but that of 19th century Scandinavian society, a society whose beauty and horror were reflectedmuch to its consternation - in the artist's work. The film, originally released in 1976, emerges anew as "the cinema's most intelligent attempt to probe and dramatize the mind and methods of a great artist," as Newsweek's Jack Kroll put it. "As portraits of artists as young and disturbed geniuses go, Edvard Munch is much more than a biopic; it's a revolutionary look at the art of creation and its aftershocks that's easily without equal." (Time Out New York)

Edvard Munch (December 12, 1863, Loten, Norway - January 23, 1944, Oslo, Norway) is a Norwegian Symbolist/Expressionism painter, whose intense, evocative treatment of psychological and emotional themes was a major influence on the development of Expressionism in the early 20th century. Munch is acclaimed to be the greatest artist of Norway and a father of Expressionism. The purpose of Expressionism and Symbolism is to show emotions that the artist feels in hopes that the viewer will be stirred and feel them as well. The artist is not concerned with reality as it appears but with its inner nature and with the emotions aroused by the subject. To achieve these ends, the subject is frequently exaggerated, distorted, or otherwise altered in order to stress the emotional experience in its most intense and concentrated form. Munch was an artist who, perhaps more than any other, was representative of the Symbolist decade. While stylistically influenced by the Postimpressionists, Munch's subject matter is symbolist in content, depicting a state of mind rather than an external reality. Munch maintained that the

Norwegian painter Edvard Munch (1863-1944) is regarded as one of the greatest artists in world history. His most famous paintings include The Kiss (1897) and The Scream Edvard Munch was raised as a devout Lutheran. As an adult, however, he abandoned the strongly-held Protestant Christian beliefs that had shaped his childhood. Munch was never again an orthodox member of any religious denomination or formally organized religion, but he remained intensely interested in spirituality and religion. Munch and his wife were involved in and interested in Spiritualism. Munch wrote much about religious topics, and his beliefs have characterized as Pantheistic.

    Kunsthalle Bielefeld

    Bielefeld, , DE
In the town of Bielefeld there is a tradition of exhibitions of the work of Edvard Munch, one of the most important artists of the 20th century. In 1907 the Kunstsalon Otto Fischer presented a total of 44 paintings and prints. In 1931 Dr Heinrich Becker showed 18 paintings and 115 printed works in the Städtisches Kunsthaus. In 1980 Dr. Ulrich Weisner put on a comprehensive exhibition, entitled Liebe Angst Tod [Love Fear Death], with drawings and prints from the Munch-museet in Oslo. This present exhibition in the Kunsthalle is devoted to works exhibited by Edvard Munch in Germany in 1912. This fourth exhibition of Munch’s work in Bielefeld focuses on his reputation and role in Germany in 1912. Munch, an outstanding painter of cityscapes, became famous at a time when he retreated to the countryside, preferring to avoid human company having repeatedly been hospitalised for nervous disorders. While fellow artists and experts in the field recognised his growing reputation, German collectors – who could have bought almost all the works on show – were still rather reticent. Edvard Munch. 1912 in Germany is supported by the Stiftung der Sparkasse Bielefeld and the Staff Stiftung, Lemgo, whose generosity made possible the purchase of painting Dorfstraße Kragerø in 1997, also painted in 1912. The exhibition is accompanied by a catalogue in German with essays and documents, and with colour illustrations of all the works on show.

Edvard Munch: A Norwegian Existentialist in Expressionist Art
    By Arne Eggum
As a young man Edvard Munch formulated a kind of manifesto, a banner for himself and his young fellow painters in Christiania to rally around:
"We want more than a mere photograph of nature. We do not want to paint pretty pictures to be hung on drawing room walls. We want to create, or at least lay the foundations of, an art that gives something to humanity. An art that arrests and engages. An art created of one's innermost heart."
Munch, however, was the only Norwegian artist of his generation to pursue this ambition. He remained a proclaimed individualist, who saw himself as a link in the chain of artists such as Michelangelo, Rembrandt, Manet, Van Gogh and Gauguin whose profound personal and intellectual commitment emphasized the human aspect of their art. A frequently quoted note from his literary diary characteristically reads: "We should no longer paint interiors with people reading and women knitting, they should be people who live, breathe, feel, suffer and love."
Although he was not alone in striving for a personal basis to his art, no other painter developed such a distinctive "private" symbolism, wrought by his own traumatic experiences. His dispassionate analysis of his innermost thoughts and fears demanded "an art which is the result of a compulsive need to open one's heart." He did not merely strive for subjectivism as such; he aimed to establish universal values through individual ones by crystallizing images of man's deepest emotions - of love, death and anxiety, images that retained primitive qualities evidently forgotten by the bourgeois civilization of his time. In reference to Gauguin one of his friends in Berlin wrote in 1893: "...he [Munch] doesn't need to travel to Tahiti to see and experience the primitive in human nature. He carries his own Tahiti within him..."

Well prepared by the press for the absence of the beloved Scream in oil, visitors thronged to see what was routinely lauded as a "beautiful" installation of the symbolist-expressionist artist's work. Other major Munch exhibitions, most notably at the Albertina in Vienna in 2003 and at the National Gallery in Washington in 1978, have approached Munch's work thematically, supported by Munch's own tendency to rework images throughout his life and organize them as part of life cycle series.
