Edvard Munch
"The camera cannot compete with the brush and the palette so long as it cannot be used in heaven or hell," observed Edvard Munch in one of his better-known aphorisms. Although the artist himself never regarded the camera as a competitor to his brush, he nevertheless made use of it throughout his career in various ways. Munch himself was the most important subject of his photographs. In his self-portraits he sometimes appears as a transparent shadow, an effect caused by moving from his pose to cover the lens of the camera. This feature is typical of a series of self-portraits taken by Munch in 1908-1909, which he called "photographs of fate". The artist had thus discovered a way to merge into his surroundings. The room and everything around the subject blend into a whole in a silent, melancholy manner. The photograph is no longer a fleeting moment in time but a medium of meditation. Munch did not capture the moment in his photographs, but let time flow into them in a unique way. He went to make a long series of self-portraits in the 1920s and '30s, observing that

Thanks to Carol Gerten-Jackson 's help in this section. Munch, Edvard (1863-1944). A gifted Norwegian painter and printmaker, Edvard Munch not only was his country's greatest artist, but also played a vital role in the development of German expressionism . His work often included the symbolic portrayal of such themes as misery, sickness, and death. The Cry , probably his most familiar painting, is typical in its anguished expression of isolation and fear.

"From the moment of my birth, the angels of anxiety, worry, and death stood at my side, followed me out when I played, followed me in the sun of springtime and in the glories of summer. They stood at my side in the evening when I closed my eyes, and intimidated me with death, hell, and eternal damnation. And I would often wake up at night and stare widely into the room: Am I in Hell?" "A painting and a motif that I struggle with for an entire year are not expended in a single picture. If it is of such importance to me, why should I then not paint and vary a motif five times? Just look at what other painters depict over and over again ad infinitum: apples, palm trees, church towers, haystacks."
Munch on his painting The Sick Child "It would be quite amusing to preach a bit to all those people who for many years now have been looking at our paintings and either laughed or shook their heads reproachfully. They do not believe that these impressions, these instant sensations, could contain even the smallest grain of sanity. If a tree is red or blue, or a face is blue or green, they are sure that is insanity."
