Norway Nationality Norwegian Edvard Munch pronounced [ˈmʉŋk] December 12 January 23 ) was a Norwegian Symbolist painter printmaker , and an important forerunner of Expressionistic art His best-known painting, The Scream (1893), is one of the pieces in a series titled The Frieze of Life , in which Munch explored the themes of life love fear death , and melancholy . As with many of his works, he painted several versions of it. Similar paintings include Despair and Anxiety The Frieze of Life themes recur throughout Munch's work, in paintings such as The Sick Child Love and Pain Ashes (1894), and The Bridge . The latter shows limp figures with featureless or hidden faces, over which loom the threatening shapes of heavy trees and brooding houses. Munch portrayed women either as frail, innocent sufferers (see Puberty and Love and Pain ) or as the cause of great longing, jealousy and despair (see Separation Jealousy and Ashes ). Some say these paintings reflect the artist's sexual anxieties, though it could also be argued that they are a better representation of his turbulent relationship with love itself.

Biography:

Edvard Munch was a Norwegian painter, known primarily for his unsettling painting The Scream. He studied in Oslo and after a brief tour around Europe, settled there. He encountered the work of Gauguin and Van Gogh while in Paris in 1908. Along with painting, Munch created etchings, lithographs and woodcuts, all which focused on agitated and disturbing imagery with life and death as primary themes. The disconcerting nature of his work caused disturbance in Berlin in 1892, where his exhibition was forced to close.

"People's souls are like planets. Like a star that rises from the darkness - and meets another star - only to disappear again into darkness - it is the same when a man and woman meet - drift apart - light up in love - burn up - and disappear each in their own direction..." Edvard Munch. "I have always worked best with my paintings around me. I placed them together and felt that some of the pictures related to each other through the subject matter. When they were placed together a sound went through them right away and they became quite different from when they were separate they became a symphony." Edvard Munch. Edvard Munch was born in Loten, Hedmark in Norway. Munch's childhood was traumatic, his father was almost fanatically religious and his mother and eldest sister died prematurely. The difficulties of his early years were to affect his character throughout his life. In 1881 after a failed period training to become an engineer, he enrolled at the Royal School of Art and Design where hepainted his first self-portrait and managed to sell two paintings. By 1884 he was already part of the bohemian world

Edvard Munch
E dvard Munch was born on December 12th, 1863, in Løten, Norway, the son of Christian Munch, a military doctor. He spent most of his childhood living in Kristiania, which is now better known as Oslo, the Norwegian capital. Edvard Munch's mother, his brother, and one of his sisters died of tuberculosis while he was still young, and Edvard was himself a sickly child. At the age of 17 was tutored in the arts by Christian Krohg, a naturalist painter, who was quite famous in Norway. Edvard's talent was evident by his early realist paintings, but the traumatic events that plagued Edvard's youth had an even deeper impact on his artistic vision than any other artist or artistic movement could have. In 1889, at the age of 26, Edvard Munch put on his first retrospective exhibit at The Norwegian Students' Association in Kristiania. The show is a success, no doubt due to the fact that he chooses to present his lighter, less anguished creations, and he is awarded a travel grant which will allow him to return to Paris for the next three years, in order to further his studies. Munch's father dies, and he returns to Paris to study, this time with Léon Bonnat, but Munch gains far more artistic direction from his interest in the works of the post-impressionists. His following show, this time in at the Artists' Association in Berlin. The show was both successful, and a disaster, as critics denounced his work as that of an anarchist, and closed the exhibit. Nonetheless, Munch becomes a household name in Germany.

Norwegian painter and printmaker whose intense, evocative treatment of psychological and emotional themes was a major influence on the development of German Expressionism in the early 20th century. His painting The Cry (1893) is regarded as an icon of existential anguish. A gifted Norwegian painter and printmaker, Edvard Munch not only was his country's greatest artist, but also played a vital role in the development of German expressionism . His work often included the symbolic portrayal of such themes as misery, sickness, and death. The Cry , probably his most familiar painting, is typical in its anguished expression of isolation and fear. The Scream (or The Cry)

"… When Munch began studying art in Christiania (now Oslo), Norwegian artists practiced a form of Protestant, populist realism. Munch was, however, from the very start, an innovator. True, he painted genre scenes, but in a spirit all his own. His mother died of tuberculosis when he was five. At fourteen, he watched his fifteen-year-old sister Sophie succumb to the same disease. When, at twenty-two, he acquired the technical means to portray it, her death became an obsession to which he returned again and again: the wan face in profile against the pillow, the despairing mother at the bedside, the muted light, the tousled hair, the useless glass of water. "Norway had long been under the influence of German aesthetics. Until 1870, Norwegian artists usually went to Düsseldorf to study and pursue a career. Later, they went to Paris, Berlin, Munich and Karlsruhe. But by 1880, Paris had become the center. And so it was that Munch, in 1885, undertaking his first journey at twenty-two, was led to discover French art and the Symbolist spirit. It was in these circumstances that Munch's personal neurosis, the anxiety which women caused him (although he pursued them incessantly until the great psychological crisis of his forties), entered the ambit of cultural anxiety expressed in Symbolist art.
