Contact Alphonse Mucha, Biography Alphonse Mucha was born in 1860 in Ivancice, Moravia, which is near the city of Brno in the modern Czech Republic. Though Mucha is supposed to have started drawing before he was walking, his early years were spent as a choirboy and amateur musician. It wasn't until he finished high school that he came to realize that living people were responsible for some of the art he admired in the local churches. That epiphany made him determined to become a painter, despite his father's efforts in securing him "respectable" employment as a clerk in the local court.

"Women and Flowers": Life and Work of Alphonse Mucha
By B. John Zavrel The city of Paris in the time of the Belle Epoque: a city of elegance, frivolity and sophistication, spiced with a hint of naughtiness. That period's most fashionable decorative artist was a man whose life seems totally different from the work that made him famous. Alphonse Mucha, whose delicately sensuous style represents the grace of French Art Nouveau, was a Moravian, born in 1860, next to the local jail in the south Moravian town of Ivancice, practically a stone's throw from Vienna, the capital of Austria. Mucha travelled from provincial obscurity to international fame. It was his conviction that his life had been shaped by the direct intervention of Fate. At three crucial stages in his life, his future was determined by chance encountersin a country church, a small market town and a Paris printing shop. Childhood and the early years as an aspiring artist He was the youngest son of a court usher. Mucha was dominated in his youth by the two forces that were the inspiration for his art: religion and nationalism. He was born at the border with the German-speaking Austria, in a region where the Czech language and traditions competed with the German neighbors. Although throughout his life his favored associates were fellow-Slavs, the Germans and the German art and culture played a significant part throughout his life. But eventually he rejected the adulation of Paris and New York in order to dedicate his art and twenty-five years of his life to "The Slav Epic" for the Czech people.

Bieres de la Meuse
Alphonse Mucha
Czech (1860-1939)
Alphonse Mucha was an artist whose work ranged from painting theater sets to decorating the palaces of Central European royalty. While he created a variety of art nouveau paintings and even stained glass in Prague's St. Vitus Cathedral, some of Mucha's best known works are actually advertising posters.
Many of Mucha's works have common elements: pretty young women and plenty of floral motifs. In addition to beer posters, Mucha actually designed some of the first bank notes and postage stamps for Czechoslovakia when the country was granted independence as a result of World War I. A number of artists in the 1960s and 1970s picked up the Mucha style of art nouveau for advertising poster illustration.

After World War I he returned to Czechoslovakia, inspiring a slavic arts and crafts movement which combined elements of art nouveau with classic national themes. In addition to commercial art , jewellery design, interior decoration, sculpture and stage design, Mucha experimented with lettering and calligraphy to produce excellent source material for unique typefaces considered synonymous with French Art Nouveau and he is one of the most imitated artists and designers of all time. Primrose and feather
These two beauties hold a flower and a feather in typical Mucha style. On this puzzle the flower is referred to as a "primrose," a translation of the original French, but it appears to refer to the cluster-headed primrose ( Primula veris ) which grows across Europe, and is known in England as "cowslip" - not to be confused with the different plant (Marsh marigold) called a "cowslip" in the USA. Even so, the colour (at least in this print) is a deep reddish hue, quite unlike a delicate primrose yellow. This puzzle has smaller pieces than the standard size. In stock

"For the Slavs, the plastic arts are a common striving towards a symbolic manifestation... a taste for symbols is part of the inheritance of all Slavs... That is why the language of symbols is the surest way to communicate our feelings to our brother Slavs." Alphonse Mucha. Alphonse Mucha was born in South Moravia. In 1882 he started to earn a living by painting portraits in Mikulov. The following year Count Khuen commissioned Mucha to decorate his castle at Emmahof and his brother Count Egon Belasi became his patron. He was educated at the Munich Academy of Arts and at the Académie Julian in Paris and after completing work for Count Khuen began work as an illustrator in 1889. His first work was a theatre magazine entitled Le Costume au Theatre and in it his first drawing of Sarah Bernhardt as Cleopatra appeared in 1890. By 1895 he had signed a six year contract with Bernardt to produce stage and costume designs as well as posters. At the same time Mucha joined the Salon des Cent, a Symbolist group that included Bonnard, Mallarmé and Toulouse-Lautrec. He designed a poster for their 20th exhibition in 1896 and the next year he exhibited many of his works at this exhibition

http://www.bpib.com/illustrat/mucha.htm
Alphonse Mucha was born in 1860 in Ivancice, Moravia, which is near the city of Brno in the modern Czech Republic. It was a small town, and for all intents and purposes life was closer to the 18th than the 19th century. Though Mucha is supposed to have started drawing before he was walking, his early years were spent as a choirboy and amateur musician. It wasn't until he finished high school (needing two extra years to accomplish that onerous task) that he came to realize that living people were responsible for some of the art he admired in the local churches. That epiphany made him determined to become a painter, despite his father's efforts in securing him "respectable" employment as a clerk in the local court. Like every aspiring artist of the day, Mucha ended up in Paris in 1887. He was a little older than many of his fellows, but he had come further in both distance and time. A chance encounter in Moravia had provided him with a patron who was willing to fund his studies. After two years in Munich and some time devoted to painting murals for his patron, he was sent off to Paris where he studied at the Academie Julian . After two years the supporting funds were discontinued and Alphonse Mucha was set adrift in a Paris that he would soon transform. At the time, however, he was a 27 year old with no money and no prospects - the proverbial starving artist.

Alphonse Mucha
Biography Page One Alphonse (Alfons) Mucha (1860-1939) was a prolific Moravian painter of the late 19th and early 20th Centuries and a key figure in the Art Nouveau movement. His style of painting influenced an entire generation of painters, graphic artists, draughtsmen and designers and in the minds of many, his work epitomizes the Art Nouveau. He himself came to resent his fame as an artist of the utilitarian, believing that true art should be elevated and epic.
Alfons Mucha was born on July 24, 1860, in the town of Ivancice, Moravia, then part of Austro-Hungary. His father was a court usher, and the family had but modest means. The future painter was raised in an atmosphere of strict Roman Catholicism, and this would later be reflected in the symbolism he employed in his work.
In 1871, Mucha joined the choir at St. Peter's Cathedral in Brno, where he was attending grammar school. He pursued singing seriously for a while, but was forced to abandon it after his voice started cracking in 1875. Instead, Mucha took up drawing lessons. Soon afterwards, he returned to Ivancice where, in the meanwhile, he found work as a municipal clerk. Continued...

No one came close to him in the Art Nouveau age, without using colour. The best of them was the Czech Alphonse Mucha (1860-1939), another graduate of the Academie Julian, whose first work was in the theatre and who never strayed far from it. One warms to Mucha because he tried so hard to bring art into the lives of the people - his greatest passion - by designing first class posters, advertisements, labels for soap, toothpaste and butter, mosaic panels for municipal swimming pools, crockery, textiles, jewellery (the snake bracelet and ring he designed for Sarah Bernhardt, executed by Fouquet, is perhaps the finest piece of costume jewellery ever created), postage stamps, calendars, letterheads and every conceivable kind of illustrative work. He loved Byzantine icons, collected them and copied them. He despised Art Nouveau, or said he did; not unfairly because his was really a style of its own. Anyone interested in design should study how ingeniously Mucha weaves into a single pattern frame and content, figures and decoration, lettering and picture. He formed a commercial love alliance with Sarah Bernhardt, when he designed the

20. WELCOME TO MUCHA MUSEUM
Art that involves women of a religious looking appearance painted in light pastel colors.

Welcome to MUCHA MUSEUM
Owner: Kyoko Mori
Mucha's art involves women of a religious looking appearance painted in light pastel colors. They have long wavy hair, a defined outline and Byzantine decoration which gives a mysterious impression . The art of Mucha who was called the pioneer of Art Nouvear, still impresses us a hundred years after he was alive. "There is no new or old in art because art is eternal" This was the spirit of Academie Colarossi where he had learned and taught, it was also the spirit of Mucha himself. Talented artists want to create art that will last forever and I believe Mucha has done that with the great works he has left us. His art brought a new wave of art into Paris and has since spread all over the world leaving a strong impression in our hearts which we remember for years. People in Paris were fascinated by his works which were expressed by the beauty of women and depicted in the delicate details of the plants and the preciseness of life, because of this he has gone to America as a hero of Bell Époque. Mucha's atelier was the center of Paris' culture at that time period. The great actress, Sarah Berndhardt and other famous artists, philosophers and scientists were attracted to this art. There is a famous story that the first film show in the world was held by the Dumiere brothers in this atelier.
