We also object to removal of the curators of the Gallery's important collection - one of the largest collections of William Morris material in the world. Access and interpretation are crucial to the success of any museum, and to reduce both is unacceptable. The Gallery is a vital international, national, and local asset to Walthamstow, and should be maintained accordingly. Sincerely, The Undersigned View Current Signatures

William Morris Howard Pyle J.R.R. Tolkien W illiam Morris (1834-1896) is best known as a compatriot of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood and the father of the Arts and Crafts movement. The exhibition description Other sources will remind us that Morris also resurrected free-hand embroidery as an art form, rediscovered almost-forgotten techniques for extracting and setting natural dyestuffs, and pioneered the return to classic typography in the face of the ghastly hordes of slab-serif fonts that characterize commercial printing of the nineteenth century. But what is intriguingly absent from the most laudatory surveys of the man and his work is the fact that William Morris almost single-handedly invented the medieval-flavored imaginary world fantasy.

William Morris and music: Craftsman's art?
Musical Times Autumn 1998 by Heywood, Andrew ANDREW HEYWOOD asks How musical was William Morris?' WILLIAM Morris: Artist, Craftsman, Poet, Designer, Printer, Musician. Musician? - one has only to add the last epithet to an otherwise conventional list of Morris's achievements to show that Morris and music are not usually associated by those familiar with Morris's activities. In comparison with those other pursuits music certainly does not rank very high: Morris did not play or build a musical instrument; he did not research, write or lecture on music as such; and he is not known to have composed, though he did of course occasionally write the words for songs, notably the `Chants for socialists'.

This is an excerpt from Best Entry-Level Jobs
In operation for more than a century, William Morris Agency is the oldest and largest talent and literary agency in the world, and industry insiders consider it to be one of Hollywood's two most powerful agencies today. Its agents represent all "above the line" talent, including actors, writers, directors, producers, musicians, comedians, hosts, and a variety of companies (many entertainment entities and others seemingly unrelated to Hollywood) that have interests that can be furthered using the Agency's extensive experience and connections in the industry. The three main departments that assistants work in are television, motion picture, and music (there's also a noteworthy consulting department in Beverly Hills and a significant theater department in the New York office). Even though the pay is lousy and the hours for assistants are ridiculous, "it's known as one of the best places to start, whether you want be an agent, producer, filmmaker, whatever. It's the graduate program in entertainment." Expect to work hard, earn little, get yelled at a lot . . . and love it.

76. William Morris Art & Type
A collection of art and fonts based on the designs of legendary Art Nouveau designer william morris.
http://www.ragnarokpress.com/artype/morris/main.html
William Morris was one of the founders of the Arts and Crafts Movement and closely involved with the Pre-Raphaelite artists of the mid-19th century. His ideal of integrating art, literature and graphic design inspired a generation of artists like Rossetti, Burne-Jones, Millais and Waterhouse. Morris was an artist, poet, writer and designer himself. He is probably best remembered for his fabric designs and his book designs for Kelmscott Press. He pioneered modern renderings of antique styles of type as well as the production of high-quality home furnishings to last for generations. Morris left behind a lasting legacy of quality and creativity which will continue to inspire artists for years to come. The Scriptorium's Morris collection includes an excellent selection of Morris' fabric designs and patterns, plus a collection of original fonts based on his type designs for books published by the Kelmscott Press. We have recently augmented the collection with new fonts, new patterns and the addition of a large selection of decorative borders, emblems and initials. Morris fabric patterns are excellent for use in web page design. They can be made into contiguous tiles for use as backgrounds on web pages, as we have done with the grape pattern on this page. They also make excellent backdrops for decorative pages in print. Each of the patterns in our Morris collection is a high-resolution image and suitable for use online or in print. Above you can see the original patterns from the collection. The new patterns added in the latest update are shown to the left.

William Morris and the History of Design
Enrollment for this course has filled. When William Morris died in 1896, the English newspapers described him simply as a poet, one of the greatest of his age. A few referred dismissively to his revolutionary politics. One mentioned in passing that he also sold wallpapers and furniture. Today Morris's poetry is rarely read. His socialism seems naive. Yet he is acknowledged as the founder of the Arts and Crafts movement that included some of the greatest names in nineteenth- and twentieth-century architecture and design. Charles Rennie Mackintosh and Edwin Lutyens, Gustav Stickley and Frank Lloyd Wright (to name but a few) were all directly inspired by Morris's conviction that design in an industrial age was ugly, mechanistic, and dehumanizing, and that honest construction, individual craftsmanship, and a respect for the past showed the way forward. A house should acknowledge its debt to tradition. A chair should show pride in the fact that it was fashioned by men rather than machines. This course looks at Morris and the times he lived in. Beginning with a general survey of society and the arts in Victorian Britain, we explore what made Morris such a pioneering figure in the history of design—his influences, his career, his friends, his turbulent and unhappy personal life. We also investigate his legacy, and the debt owed to him by a whole generation of twentieth-century architects and craftsmen.

Morris's original garden designs are being restored. William Morris believed that gardens should be used to "clothe" a house and he designed the gardens of The Red House for that purpose. Although the house was sold to a family who kept it for more than 150 years, the main features of Morris's original landscaping have been maintained.

Long ago there was a little land, over which ruled a regulus or kinglet, who was called King Peter, though his kingdom was but little. He had four sons whose names were Blaise, Hugh, Gregory and Ralph: of these Ralph was the youngest, whereas he was but of twenty winters and one; and Blaise was the oldest and had seen thirty winters.
The Story Of The Glittering Plain

But one day of early spring, when the days were yet short and the nights long, Hallblithe sat before the porch of the house smoothing an ash stave for his spear, and he heard the sound of horse-hoofs drawing nigh, and he looked up and saw folk riding toward the house, and so presently they rode through the garth gate; and there was no man but he about the house, so he rose up and went to meet them, and he saw that they were but three in company: they had weapons with them, and their horses were of the best; but they were no fellowship for a man to be afraid of; for two of them were old and feeble, and the third was dark and sad, and drooping of aspect: it seemed as if they had ridden far and fast, for their spurs were bloody and their horses all a-sweat.
    A Dream Of John Ball
I got up and rubbed my eyes and looked about me, and the landscape seemed unfamiliar to me, though it was, as to the lie of the land, an ordinary English low-country, swelling into rising ground here and there. The road was narrow, and I was convinced that it was a piece of Roman road from its straightness. Copses were scattered over the country, and there were signs of two or three villages and hamlets in sight besides the one near me
